aimcat 1309 , 2nd set of DI - BAT & MACHINES , ques 26.... isnt the answer supposed to be 26 ?

@[319787:vinmohcetvmklm] Looks like we guys are opening together for Kerala .. Oct 18th it is.. 3.15pm.. Wher's ure centre ?

7) A straight line crosses an 8 by 8 chess board. What is the largest number of squares it can pass through (not just touch the boundary)?

@[533596:Kevin88] same date morning session..taking it at Cochin.. the centre near South Station.. dont remember the name exactly..
PS: wanted to opt for bangalore but couldnt

I think it is 15 squares.. not sure...by drawing a line parallel to the line joining one corner to the other ( like the diagonal of a square) we can make the line pass through 8 main squares

@[533596:Kevin88]
and 7 nearby squares..
missed this part as the browser crashed

@[149515:dead_alive] The answer too is mentioned as 26 only..

I got my doubt cleared.. forgot to read the second condition !!!

@[319787:vinmohcetvmklm] Shudn't we also consider 2*2 , 3*3 , 4*4...8*8 squares too ?

I got the answer as 36.
Didnt understand the part abt nearby squares ?

@[533596:Kevin88]
see the attachment

the setup time is applicable for each process only if you are changing the machines ...

this is the explanation they have given

t1 - m3 (1+6)
t2 - m1 (1+4)
t3 - m1 8
t4 - m1 6

total 26 mins ...

even I am getting the same solution as yours @[533596:Kevin88]

@[533596:Kevin88]
I just took a simple case.. "Shudn't we also consider 2*2 , 3*3 , 4*4...8*8 squares too ?I got the answer as 36" I didn't get your method, bro.. explain pls

@[319787:vinmohcetvmklm] Thanks !! Think your's is the right ans, by including 2*2 upto 8*8 squares; with the said condition you wud get a plethora of such squares !!

@[533596:Kevin88] as it was mentioned in the Q that it is a proper 8 X 8 board ( or say any n X n), we can go for this.. if they remove any square or give a condition like should pass through any two but not the third, then i think we need to take the conditions right from 2 X 2 to n X n..

@[149515:dead_alive] Our methodology is wrong because , since we are not changing machines (for processes 2,3,4 we use the same machine; here M1--ther wud be no setup time reqd for processes 3 & 4 (refer condition 2 abt instantaneous shift )

So Min time : (6+1) + (4+1) + 8 + 6 =26 Min
aarg... my mistake , the result should be min time whatever you do... forgot that

@[533596:Kevin88] , Joining date could be very soon, within a month if i clear their linguistic test on saturday at coimbatore. But that will hamper my CAT preps a lot...so lets see how it goes on saturday and then i ll decide

@[495113:joethaliath] All the Best Joe..keep luking out for better opportunities too !!!

@[495113:joethaliath] all the best buddy.......... :)

@[533596:Kevin88] @[397955:rohan_bhasker] thanks.

My goodness, this thread has become really active. Anyways, this is how i solved kevin's CAT ques.

LCM of 5,8,6 =120
time to read passage =120min
time for 1 ques = 10min

Total time spent = 120*4 + 27*10 =750
Reducing 10%, we get time = 675

Now time for ans questions is same (ie 270) and so
675=4x+270
x=101.25

% change = (101.25-120) / 120 *100 =15.625%
Hows the answer 18.5 ??

@[533596:Kevin88] Used trial and error. 1 and 4 satisfy.
