My word of advice before i unsubscribe from this thread, to all those who are looking to buy a laptop this season ..
please do yourselves a little favor and get a good laptop, in the sense , understand that you are going to be using it for next two years... and you are not really going to just go to market and buy a new one as soon as you pass out.. so give or take 6-7 more months.. make sure, the machine you buy, has some capabilities, which are at least a little match to the machines which may come out soon in next years.. I know its too hard to match anything that'll be 2 yrs hence, but at least dont make heavy compromises on speed, for eg. try and get say 3GB ram, which can be used for most OS which may be out soon .. try and get 2ghz instead of 1.8Ghz which is today, already old..
i know this sounds extreme view of some one who has no sense for value of money .. but i suggest you look at this gadget as an investment .. after all this is going to be ur best frnd for next coupla years ..
I know, most of these things would be known to most ppl here.. thought I shud just reiterate.. so excuse me if , in ur opinion, i have stated the absolute obvious things.

Dell does delay the service. As they don't have any service station in Pune, you won't get the service at the day you request. You will get it at the next business day. Whereas for HP & other manufacturers you have the service centres available at every city.
But, I don't think that should be enough reason to switch from HP to Dell. How many time would you be using your warranty ? Or you may never require it.
I have a DV6226tx laptop. I purchased it last year but the condition is very good. I bought it for more than 60k that time but I'm ready to sell it for 49k.
I am selling it coz I will be moving out of the country very soon and won't be carrying my laptop (just in case someone wants to know my intention of selling it).
Gimme a call at 9810799897 in case ur interested or if you want more info on this.
Rest assured of the performance of this model. Its good value for money and good one for gaming/heavy-applications too (coz of the on-chip Nvidia Controller
).

My brother went to the US this weekend. He is carrying his work laptop given to him by his company. I am thinking of telling him to get a laptop for me from the US. I have the following questions:
1. Will customs give him any problems for carrying two laptops with him while coming back?
2. What all do I need to tell him to look for while buying the laptop from US and bringing it back to India? Some which come to my mind are - ask for international warranty and cds of the OS and drivers. Anything else I should tell him to look for?

Point 1 - Not really sure if they allow two laptops on board. You will have to check that up with someone who did do that.
Point 2 - Warranty definite yes. As for cds - they are bundled with the laptop. And there are many ways to bypass regional settings (as with DVDs etc)
Oh yeah, you would have to look at the power adapter. You would need an adapter which fits our sockets. Available locally.
Cheers.

Yes, you may tell ur bro to get u a laptop as well. Since his other laptop is a work laptop(provided he has a letter from the company that they have given him the laptop), hence a personal laptop is ok with the customs

Hey, the logic sounds perfect, but Laws can bit that.
Anyway, do you really know someone who has done it actually ? Even I want to buy a laptop from US, so.
Thanks.
I have doubts about getting a laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed, because it seems that Vista still has teething troubles. I've read on some forums that people prefer to downgrade to Win XP instead of putting up with Vista and its quirks (which include application incompatibility and unexpected crashes). Also, I think that laptops without an OS (or with Linux) cost a good Rs. 4000 or so less than laptops with Vista and with the same hardware configuration.
So how wise would it be to get a laptop without an OS or with Linux, and then to install Win XP onto it? Has anyone here tried it?
