1. Are laptops also assembled like desktops that we don't have a fixed brand but a compiled one
??: ?
NO
2. What should be the preferences when we buy them and the meanings of preferences?
If u're going to a B-School, it's gotta be battery life. Dell and Lenovo are the best in this segment. All the other manufacturers lag way way behind.
3. My usage with laptop would be creating presentation slides and internet, no gaming etc.
SO u can happily rule out the AMD Processors. Intel it is! The Dual-Core processors (Core Duo and Core2 Duo) ROCK!
4. Should I go for the branded names?
All names in the laptop market are branded. Dell, Acer, Toshiba, HP, Compaq...all of 'em.
5. Is any warranty or guarantee is provided by the laptop manufacturers?
Yep...a default warranty of 1 year is provided...but I suggest u to pay 2K extra and go for the 2 year warranty...things will be stable at least till the time u're done with ur MBA.
6. Which company provides the best service in case of repair?
Like Maruti in the automobile segment, there's no Indian manufacturer in the Laptop market. From what I've heard, it's Dell in India.
8. I dont need a hard disk of too much high capacity. A hard disk of 40 Gb is sufficient for me.
Doesn't matter much...now-a-days 80GB comes default with the lappy. :p
9. I need fast internet on it.
Depends on the connectivity of ur institute. Pray it's good. :p
10. It should not hang much.
Go for the Intel Dual-Core processors.
11. I can purchase it only from India. Should I get it from the nearest Metropolitan that is Delhi or Ahemdabad or from a local dealer in Haryana? Would this make a difference?
With Dell, things are done online...if u want any change in the config, all u need to do is call the fellows up. No need to travel long distances etc.
12.Should I ask for original windows XP installation in it?
It's default. U'll get it even if u don't want it. :p
13. I would but the next one after four years. So the technology should rest until then with me.
Rest assured, it will.
14. DVD writer is a must.
I think even this is default with the Dell Inspiro 6400.
15. Which should I prefer XP or Vista. With Vista I have heard many people complaining!!
GO for VIsta...if u don't like it, XP's always there. :D
Look...Lenovo Thinkpad's are the unanimous best in the market...but they'd cost u as well. If u have a 65-75K budget, go for the Thinkpad R60 models. (u'll need a visit to the city for this)
Dell gives u the best value for money. The logic is pretty simple too.
Most of the companies (HP, Acer, Toshiba etc.) go for retail outlets...so in the supply chain, middlemen exist. What Dell does is that it's done away with these middlemen. All the logistics from manufacturing till couriering the laptop are done by Dell. Thus the costs borne by Dell are less compared to the costs borne by other companies. The costs are reflected in the final price of the laptops.
HP gives u a very attractive configuration...but the problem is battery life. In a B-School, I was specifically told that battery life in a laptop is everything. A senior of mine used his DVD writer just once in 2 years (while leaving the B-School 😛 ) ... he has never used his webcam and the built in microphone. All the HP embellishments take a backseat when u're in a B-School.
ACER's a good deal...if u're going for the 35K - 40K ladder.
TOSHIBA's got the best looking laptops in the market...but...looks are all they've got!
If u want Dell...all u've gotta do is go to DELL Inidia Website and configure that Inspiron 6400/640M of urs.
And...go for the 9-cell Li-Ion battery. For the processor and RAM matching, read this post -> Resolving the processor-RAM-peripheral conundrum
hey guys..

Does anybody have any information about how good the Dell Inspiron 1501 (Athlon Turion 64x2 2 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD, Vista etc), or Dell lappies in general are?..like how reliable they are, replacements, the Dell support etc. I'm getting a 1 month old one really cheap (~32k), and internet reviews are totally contradictory - some rave on about it, and some think it's shit, and I'm confused, so any input from Dell Inspiron owners, or any Dell owners will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm a dell user and happy with it. Your config looks good. Just make sure you are covered by warranty - And see if you have an option to upgrade RAM. Vista starts working good with a minimum of 2 GB.

Many thanks! I bought it today and its an absolute breeze to use...yea i'll have the warranty transferred from the original owner. So far, no problems with Vista on 1 GB, but if things start getting sluggish I probably will have to upgrade. But Vista looks quite impressive so far...

i m a bit confused,i have a budget of 50k and was nearly through with the purchase of HP2519,but then as it comes with vista the owner of the shop told me that vista has many drawbacks, like nokia pc suite does not works and c,c++ are also not supported,he actually was trying to explain that toshiba was much better, can u kindly suggest me what to do in this case, does vista really has drawbacks,if it is the latest windows OS then certainly there must be a solution.

Yeah, Vista does have all those drawbacks. If your usage demands you to have all that working fine, then stay away from Vista. If you are just a gamer/movie watcher etc etc... You can take the XP version. But I'm confident Vista will have updates coming up to cover up all those drawbacks.

Can someone suggest a good laptop in the range of Rs 35000--38000. The latest Acer laptop appears to be a good one. Also it must be able to support bioinformatics applications as i am studying MBA (Biotechnology).

For that range, look out for AMD Turion X2 based laptops from Acer and Compaq. And not for one moment should you hesitate while picking an AMD machine. Its an awesome decision, especially when on a budget.
Cheers!

R u a HP sales person???...then ur opinion must be biased 😐
no guys i m not a HP agent nor i m advertising. i just gave my opinion. i saw tht some are buying laptops at a very high price. if they research more into this then they can get a good bargain. even i have a HP laptop (v2000 series) and its very good. earlier i had acer but tht gave a hell lots of problems. my sister uses DELL but thts too expensive. so if unknowingly i violated any of the boards rule then i m extremely sorry.
