hey sahil.. i dont think ur config will suffice. coz most schools have a minium requirement specifed which included 40gigs HDD and 256 MB ram etc.. its best to call up the b-school n check with them once u have decided which school to join 😃
hi,
anyone using the following brands:
NEC and Fujitsu??
There are some gr8 deals from them but i am not so sur about their reliability and service backup in india..
anyone with more info on these pls post!!

not heard of these brands being sold in india.. they might be offering good deals but service sure will be an issue.. u cud check if they have tie ups with some other brands for service.. can u post the links for the deals u found really cheap ?

didnt know b schools have a minimum requirement for a laptop as well .. thanks a lot!!

Fujitsu is pretty expensive. NEC I heard sells the normal models (1.73, 256 Ram et al) for 60K

By the time your friends on their Duo Core would have finished their PPT presentations, you might be just waiting for Windows to load
The config you are talking is pre-historic!

i don't understand why is a laptop essential when u r in a b-school. i have seen many people saying so. Lot of my b-schooler friends don't use laptops, so why is it said like that?

lol.. yeah. even if the b-school dont have a minium requirement its better to have something upto date.. u can buy at the bulk deals at the school. comes out pretty cheap if u r not very particular abt the config u want..

btw, checked out alienware notebook.. someone mentioned they r pretty cheap. didnt find anything like that. a similar config like the dell was for abt $1700 😲

for one thing, it doesnt tie u up to ur desk most b-schools now have wifi campuses and u can do ur presentations jus abt anywhere. especially when u have to work in groups, its not possible for everyone to have their desktops in the same room ! besides, with the prices of laptops crashing, its make a lot more sense to have one..

hey u can look at the DELL 6400 sans the graphics card. will fit into ur budget. u can also go for a slightly lower spec process or and add a sound card.. 😃 go to the dell site and try a custom config. shud fit ur budget i guess

hey pratik,
when buying a laptop, what should be the ideal battery specification, one should take into consideration... from the point of view of a b-schooler, offcourse.

hey gaurav,

now that depends on the usage.. i am not very sure abt the requirements at a b-school but most of the laptops come with a backup of 2hrs-3hrs.. last yr XLRI had provided the IMB r52 which has a backup of approx 2.30 hrs.. i think anything above 2hrs shud suffice..
funkypratik Says
oh yes.. buying it through a friends at HP will definitely be cheaper. a frnd of mine working at HP jus got that model for himself..(he got into ISB) he got it for 56k all inclusive.. thats a cool 8k off and the 4% tax too !

Hi FunkyPratik. I am planning to buy the same laptop that you got. The HP Pavilion DV5118 TX. So how does it perform? And more about it. I heard it from the forum that if you get the same through any of the HP associates you would get a cool 8K off. Is it true? Can you help me in this regard. Please try to reply ASAP as i am running out of time.

U might need your laptop to run on battery in your summers.

In general u'll need your laptop to make presentations and reports (Powerpoint and Word), run spreadsheets (Excel) and perform some kind of data analysis in statistical softwares (SPSS). U may also want to use it for songs and movies. IMHO, an entry level Pentium M processor (1.6 Ghz) with 512 MB RAM and 915 board should do. (Unless u really want to Game!) Try to get a screen with Crystal bright technology (For greater viewing angles).
