Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Respected Sir/Madam,

Iam planning to apply to JCU Singapore for a MBA programme this year
Kindly suggest as to whether it is a good option in terms of the course and placements.
I also wanted to know,as I plan to come back to India will it be a recognizable degree out here and will I get jobs back here.

Foerevercool, everyone's learning needs are different - what may be great for another person may not be great for you. So, I would advise you to do your own research about this b-school. You can start by drawing out a list of the criteria that matter to you in terms of priority, which can include:

1. location of school and the region you want to work in after MBA
2. curriculum- core and electives modules/ specializations
3. employability - how active is the career cell? How much help can you expect from them/ which companies/ industries recruit at that b-school
4. Culture/ social environment
5. Internship/ hands-on learning opportunities
6. International component
7. faculty
8. class size
9. learning method- lecture based/ case method/ experiential
10. other factors that matter to you.

Talk to current students/ alums and ask them questions.

In general its always a better idea to apply to 5-6 schools, so I hope you are not pinning all your hopes on any one MBA program.

All the best,

Hi,
My Profile Credentials:

Previous Tests Score:CAT2009:96.06
XAT2011:99.67%(wl...seems to get a reject for sure)
GMAT2012:710
My Target MBA college are IIM(top 6 only),FMS,XLRI,ISB and NUS since I am getting a descent salary in my current organization.
So,could anyone enlighten me what are the chances of getting into these B schools with the mentioned profile ,plus should i retake GMAT again to improve my chances for getting a call from foreign B-Schools(which ofcourse comes in the league of ISB/NUS).

Thanks in Advance

Ashu, Your work experience is on the lower side and in this scenario, sometimes it becomes difficult for a candidate to mention interesting and impactful leadership/ achievement stories.

Essentially b-schools look out for these traits along with a good career progression, among applicants. If you think you are doing well on these counts, then you can consider applying to your list of schools. However be sure of your career goals and why you need the MBA- this is where most applicants falter.

Since GMAT is only one of the evaluation criteria and you have a decent score, I would not suggest you to retake it- improve on any other aspects of your application instead.

I wonder if you are talking about the PGP courses at IIMs? Because the PGPX courses have a work experience requirement of 5+ years.

Hello fellow Pagals and Experts!

My name is Abhishek Mahapatra, currently working in Mumbai for financial and security services. I have 2 years of work experience. :)

I am confused as heck among the colleges I have applied to. I have done my graduation in marketing and hence would like to pursue my MBA/Masters majoring in marketing. :)

Right now, I have 3 colleges in hand offering admission to me:
1) Emerson, Boston for its MA Integrated Marketing Communication Fall 2012
2) Brandeis IBS, Boston for it Fall MBA 2012
3) Thunderbird for its Spring MBA 2013

From a future perspective involving placements and opportunities in Marketing, can anyone help me out with these colleges? Through my prior research about Brandeis, I came to know that it is primarily a Finance streamed school with less importance given to Marketing. I have no idea about Emerson's MA in IMC. And Thunderbird is known for it Fall MBA intake so I am really in 2 minds about it's Spring intake

I am just awaiting a decision from NYU SCPS about their Integrated Marketing Program. As compared to the colleges I have mentioned, how does NYU SCPS fare?

I would really appreciate an honest and sincere advice from you guys!

Regards!

Hi,

I want your help to analyze my profile and suggest me some MBA programs and schools.

ACADS :

Xth -85%
XIIth -88%
BTECH - ECE - 84%

So I think they are good acads. (no ?)

Coming in to extra curricular and co-curriculars in this period, here are a few to mention.

  1. During high school, I acted as editor in chief for the school magazine
  2. Acted as Student cultural secretary in high school
  3. During Graduation, I again worked as cultural president and conducted many technical symposiums which involved lot of planning, organizing and interacting with numerous students from various colleges
  4. Also hosted many cultural and technical events during my BTECH
  5. Also acted as the head of student Anti-ragging squad.
  6. Also acted as student representative for placements.
  7. worked part time in a leading bank as a phone banking officer during my BTECH
  8. Worked as a part of a team which organized an inter college cultural fest by times of India. 14 students were selected from 400 people. We were involved in planning, publicity, contacting the celebs and organizing the events.

Being done with all these during BTECH, I have been selected in campus by a US based MNC and I have been working with the company since then.

My Job profile

  1. Title : Associate Systems Engineer - Role : Application Developer
  2. Experience : Almost 4 Years
  3. Now, I am taking transition to be a business analyst in the current project and would be taking up the new role shortly and I am considering this as an achievement because, I am moving in to this role out of my enthusiasm and this reflects my interest in management.
  4. Could not participate in any NGO kind of stuff during this period.

So, that's it. I have made a mistake by not starting my preparation a year ago or even earlier.

For Sure, I will try for ISB. I want you to suggest some other schools, considering my profile.

Thanks a ton for all the patience in reading this and thanks in advance for replying.

hi i am really confused which college should i take admission

as i want to get into a private college
so which 1 is better

amity , iilm, gd goenka or ny other?

and which campuses are best of the institutes?

is amity 3 continent is gud comparing it with the general 1?

Hi Puys,

I am new here and would really appreciate if some of you would answer some of my queries as well as evaluate my profile. Please plzz be kind to guide as per my queries..

This is my first attempt at GMAT and ISB is my only motivation for it, so please evaluate with respect to that.

My Profile:
Engg. - 73% (First Class with Distinction - VTU, Karnataka)
Work Ex - 3 Years (Sopra Group(French MNC), IT industry - SAP), including 2 europe trips, 2 Star performer ratings (5 star rating), Configuration Manager for Audits of organisation (ISO, CMMI etc.)
Extra Curricular - Was awarded 'Distinguished Engineer' of Karnataka award in Aspiration 2020 organized by Infosys..
Was invited & went to Cape Town, South Africa to attend Global Student Forum on Engineering Education (was among 30 students chosen from across the globe)..
Was awarded best student of the batch award from college..
Only member from India who was elected to be part of main council of SPEED (A global engineering education development society).
Organized various college fests, started an NGO in college..
Have dozens of awards and certificates in various events in various fests in different colleges, as well as some awards in sports (not possible to mention all)..
A few articles published in local newspaper..
As a hobby, I love playing musical instruments like guitar, piano and write and compose music as well..

Now my questions:
1. What are my chances for ISB considering 700+ score at GMAT?
2. What are the good foreign colleges which I must apply to with my profile?
3. Where can I get the code of colleges which we have to enter at the end of GMAT, when asked to send scores to five b-shools?
4. Where can I get the list of top B-schools abroad that accept GMAT scores?
5. How much do the 10th, 12th(CBSE) scores matter (Did good in 10th, bad in 12th)?

Cant thank u puys enough to take out time to read this and actually reply to this as well...

Waiting ur reply..

Hi Puys,

Also it will be good if you could recommend a few good mock tests for GMAT..

I can only appear for 3-4 before my GMAT, so guide accordingly...
Thanks..

Why only ISB, sirji? Many good bschools internationally would give you a good education and good career options.

1. What are my chances for ISB considering 700+ score at GMAT?
700+ isn't the only criterion. ISB (and all the other good schools) will give more importance to your professional background and your managerial/business/leadership skills. In your post, there's only a single line about your work-ex and a lot more about your extra-curriculars.

2. What are the good foreign colleges which I must apply to with my profile?
See last line of prev response. With the information you've shared, tough for anyone to give you a general list of bschools.

3. Where can I get the code of colleges which we have to enter at the end of GMAT, when asked to send scores to five b-shools?
You don't need the codes. At the end of the test, you'll see the names of the schools and select accordingly.

4. Where can I get the list of top B-schools abroad that accept GMAT scores?
Download the latest Financial Times Top-100 MBA rankings. All the schools on that list accept GMAT.

5. How much do the 10th, 12th(CBSE) scores matter (Did good in 10th, bad in 12th)?
Not much. Unless you've done something brilliant in those.

Also it will be good if you could recommend a few good mock tests for GMAT..I can only appear for 3-4 before my GMAT, so guide accordingly...
You can get 2 free full-length tests from mba.com If you are only planning for 3-4, that should take care of 50% of your requirement. Take them only when you are ready.

Dear All,
I am in the middle of a mental breakdown as the mistakes I have committed in the past never really leave me. I was basically a good student but with my own hands I have screwed my B.E. degree, though I landed a good job, my future quest for education from a reputed institution seems bleak. Whatever, I wish I could undo the past but since that is not possible, I wish to take a shot at whatever best I could muster up, my brief profile:
10th - 82% (CBSE)
12th - 69.7% (CBSE)
B.E. - 58.66% (Nagpur University)
Work experience - 18 months in Bajaj Electricals Ltd (Engineering & Projects)
Present salary - 26000 p.m.
CAT score - 97.70 percentile (All rejects till date)
Extra curricular - Quite strong in fact have an award from Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs

Now please tell me what to do??? I wish to change things for myself and make them happen to me as I want.
Please Help!! MAY DAY!MAY DAY!!

Hi,

I am presently in a dilemma. I had this year appeared for CAT and have offers from IMT G, IIT M.
However i had also applied for Warwick Business School - MSc Finance and IT and have received an offer from them. This program of theirs is new but their MSc Finance is quite well known
Now i am wondering how to choose between my option.

If someone could help me in analysing my option i would be grateful

Thanks,
Swetha

Hi,

So I think they are good acads. (no ?)

Your grades before undergrad are not considered.

Coming in to extra curricular and co-curriculars in this period, here are a few to mention. [I really dont know if these are worthy enough to make in to an application

Depends on how you tie them to your overall essay stories. In my opinion, college extra-curriculars show great commitment, but you have been out of college for 4 years and not followed them with any more activities now. So there is only an extent to which you can talk about them.

Now, I am taking transition to be a business analyst in the current project and would be taking up the new role shortly and I am considering this as an achievement because, I am moving in to this role out of my enthusiasm and this reflects my interest in management.

Good, as you made this happen for you. Its crucial that you communicate this move in the right way in the application - That you worked your way to move into this position because it is aligned with your interests and with your future career goals.

I will try for ISB. I want you to suggest some other schools, considering my profile

Its hard to suggest b-schools without knowing what you want from your MBA education. Moreover, you should do this research yourself. Read some of my previous posts on this thread to get an idea of how you can do this.

Hi Puys,

This is my 1st post in this forum and I am in desperate need of some good advice regarding my further studies.

My Background :
Class X : 80.16% (ICSE)
Class XII : 71.8% (ISC)
B.E.(Comp. Sc.) : 58% aggregate,64% in final year (Pune University)
Extra-curricular : none in particular
Worked for 22 months in Infosys as a System Engineer, in a tech support project, wasn't satisfied with my work so quit last year and since then looking into my family business.

Lately I've been looking to pursue Masters/MSc. in business mgmt or some related discipline, preferably from abroad, but have the following apprehensions:
1. Is doing a 1year MSc from UK worth spending the moolah since employment rate is quite dismal and due to the new strict visa norms, getting a decent job is very hard ?

2. How beneficial(in terms of job prospects) would it be to do a masters in mgmt from one of the following: University of Glasgow,University of Exeter,Robert Gorden University,Durham University,University of Strathclyde,University of Liverpool,Roehampton University,University of Leicester,Sussex University ?

3. Is it possible for me to get admission for MSc in Finance in the above universities or any other good universities. How are the job prospects after that?
:banghead:

Please help me with ur most valuable suggestions!!
Any other option? Please enlighten me!

Hello Consultants,

Please evaluate my profile and help me clear some doubts of mine by sparing some of your valuable time.

B.E - 67% (Electronics & Comm Engg) - recovered from backlogs in 2 of my semesters but without any gap in between.
I've done a 6 month Diploma in Advanced Computing (DAC) from CDAC, Bangalore and scored 72%.

Work Experience - I've been working as a Software Engineer for a product based company in the Aviation industry for about 2 years now (so no opportunity to demonstrate leadership qualities yet!!!). I've had an international experience of about 3 months during the course of my job.

Extra Curricular Activities - I'm an avid football fan and have captained my team in school and played for the college team. I have also participated and won in various skit competitions, cricket tournaments etc organized within the company although I haven't received any certificates for all of them. I've been partially involved with an NGO which is responsible for the upbringing of mentally challenged children although I haven't been able to given enough time ever since I started working.

I went through some of the threads wherein they discussed about the questions asked in the essays and the interview like 'Why MBA? Why this country? How will it help your career? What do you want to do in your life?' etc. I need some help in figuring out the answers to these questions since I don't've a definite and a firm answer to any of these questions.

I'm hesitant in starting my preparation for GMAT due to this. I'm worried all the entire effort might become a huge waste if I finally decide to go against an MBA.

As of now the only reason I want to do it is bcoz I've lost interest in the technical field and i find it tough to cope up with the huge domain that I'm working in. The IT part too bores me out a bit. Also the average life cycle for a product to be fully developed takes around 5-10 years with all the safety standards that have to be followed and likewise progression in the career path takes up almost equal amount of time. Changing it is not an option nor am I largely interested to do so. I feel I can do a lot better and find better options with an MBA. I'm also in it for the money (obviosuly :D) and I would definitely choose an option that will help me get settled in a better position sooner with a hefty package.

I went through many of the reasons provided by fellow puys as to why they want to pursue an MBA and related threads to finance, marketing etc but as evident each person's perception varies from another and so does the reason. I didn't want to get influenced by any of the reasons mentioned by others in the threads and felt rather I would come up with my own unique and confident motive. And for this I guess I might need some personal attention and interaction. So I hope any of our consultants here could answer my question or atleast point me to anyone (if a career counsellor then someone in Bangalore) I could get help from to explore my true potential. It would be a bonus if maybe anyone can suggest few pointers to improve my profile (in co curriculars i guess?). A sincere salute to the job you guys are doing here. Thank you!

Hi Guys,

2. Was also planning to give ISB a shot but was told by a lot of people that my work ex is low. How much emphasis is placed by ISB on the amount of work -ex? Can my low work ex be mitigated by the other aspects of my profile (say, a high GMAT score) ?

9. organizer of TML technical event in 2010.
10 Selected for IIM I 2012-2014, not joining.

Unfavorable --

1.ordinary acads - 10,12 in mid 70s, BE mechanical 69%. (from National Instt of Tech. Raipur)
2.have a gap year.
3.nothing on extra curricular front - except Gen Sec of Mech Engg Association in graduation. and 1-2 activities in Tata Motors.few more activities but no certificates (does it matter?)

Queries -- (i will appreciate a frank opinion.)

1.Do i stand a good chance of getting in to ISB.(as far as profile is concerned), if yes then how strong (say on a scale of 1-10, 10 being very, very strong, 1 being very little)
2.What GMAT score i should target?
3. anything you feel relevant to me.

thanks a lot for your time.

Sushnato, Start by understanding what you really want to do going ahead. Unless you are clear about this, you might just be chasing some wrong dreams, leading to further frustration.

So, a pen and paper look like your best options right now

Hi,

Having a low GPA and GMAT is definately not an advantage. However not all b-schools require top-of-the-class scores. I would suggets you to go through the current class profiles of business schools (use BW/FT/ US News rankings). You can apply to programs where your GMAT/ GPA scores are close to the class average scores, preferably on the higher side. But this is only one criteria for b-school selection - go through their websites and determine which programs best cater to your learning needs.

Also i have been teaching kids who come from financially challenged families. But these classes are held for 3 months in a year (summer vacations). Would this make any difference to my profile?

If this has sustained over many years then you can talk about it.
