Hello, I am looking at the course - MSc in Carbon Finance that Edinburgh Business School offers. I have already applied for the course and my application is under consideration. I would like to hear opinion on the following concerns that i have:-
1. Is UK a good option to study considering the fact that the UK government would not extend its VISA for the student after the completion of the course?
2. Would it be possible for me to apply for jobs while the course is in session (towards the end of it)?
3. How are the job prospects for a course such as Carbon Finance?
4. Stupid though it may sound but what kind of remuneration does a carbon consultant look at?
I am a bit confused. My Goal is to study and get into sustainable energy futures in the long run but due to the heavy investment required in this field, I need a higher consensus. Thanks

Hi,
Queries -- (i will appreciate a frank opinion.)
1.Do i stand a good chance of getting in to ISB.(as far as profile is concerned), if yes then how strong (say on a scale of 1-10, 10 being very, very strong, 1 being very little)
2.What GMAT score i should target?
3. anything you feel relevant to me.
thanks a lot for your time.
Hi,
Its impossible for anyone (other that ISB's adcom, I guess) to rate you on a score of 1-10. What if I say you rate at 3? Will you drop the plan to apply at ISB? What if I say you rate at 9? Will you get compalcent and put forward a weak application? Either ratings won't help you, so don't seek them :).
So let me list down what I think will help you:
1. Your grad/ post-grad scores are the ones that hold value not the ones before that.
2. Your strong engineering background is interesting. & the good thing is you have been involved in project management. Use this experience to demonstrate your interest in the business side and explain how this has led you to your future career goals. Additionally, present well- researched future career goals with enough details.
3. You do not require certificates to prove your involvement in extra curricular/ volunteering activities.
4. Your achievements in chess sound impressive. If your involvevment is continuous, you can talk about it in the application ( a one-time chess championship 5 years ago will not be very impactful).
5. GMAT- target an 800, but score the best you can, preferably above the class average of 710.
So, while any speculations are baseless, a well-researched, well-structured and well-presented application will get you closer to an admit.
All the best.

Hello Puys
My query is what can i do over next 4-5 months to boost my profile that will help me in getting good summer internships ????
I think you should explore various career options (includng industries(finance, consulting, manufacturing etc.) and functions (operations, marketing, sales etc.) so that you form some ideas about what you want to do and where you want to work- i.e. your career goals.
This will help you to in selecting your internship company (if you have that choice) and later with your job placement.
Mostly, people who do an MBA just after college have not really thought through answers related to their career goals. As a result, they are not able to make the best use of their time during the course. If you can direct yourself through the MBA with an aim in your mind, it would be great.
I don't think you need any other certifications.

2. No Career growth to talk about in terms of designation (Sales guys would understand)
Extra Currics: Decent

-> State Level T.T. Player (school & college champ) & team was a winner at state level
-> Was a member of few organizing committees, Scouts member in school etc
I want to apply for 2013 admits, if needed might apply in 2014 as well.. am married.. age will turn 29 this year..What more can i do to make my profile stronger to break into the league mentioned this year? Do i even have rare chances to make a break?
Thanks,

Hi All,
Will request your help in deciding if I should retry my GRE or if my profile is strong enough to proceed for the schools I want. It is going to be my second MBA so please keep that in mind.
Here are the details for my candidature
Nationality/Gender: Indian/Male
GRE Score 162 both sections
Work Ex: IT & Operational Compliance
I have over 7 years of work exp in IT Compliance and have worked in US, Europe, S.E.Asia and India. I have always worked in client facing roles and have also managed offshore team. I have worked for both IT and Business Clients across various sectors from banking to telecom to manufacturing to government.
Education: Production Engg and MBA (SCMHRD, Pune). Still have to fetch my GPA but they will be around 3.5
Extra Curr: Was very active in my engineering days but since then it has tapered off. Still do some photography, workout and some social work.
I am looking to apply to institutes in the US East coast only because of personal reasons. What do you'll think is my chance in Yale, Stern, Darden, Sloan and such schools.
As an exception I will consider Insead and IMD Switzerland.
Hoping for some guidance.
Regards,
Abhinav
hey myself have no work experience and willing to study abroad , so is that we wont be preferred without work experience in gmat ???

Ashu, The GMAT scores are just one component in your MBA application. At 690, your score is not the greatest, but it also does not call you to fret over it. Besides you have a good undergrad GPA, and the Gold medal is a plus.
Instead of preparing for GMAT, you should instead utilize your time in putting together a stellar application, which would mean:
1. Communicating your differentiating factors
2. Communicating your career progression.
3. Having well researched and logical career goals.
4. Demonstrating overall personality development.

This is the hard work you are required to do

I wanna do my 2nd MBA from Global top 10.. H/S/W/ Sloan etc.. Interested in making a career in Strategy in Industry..
I know its ambitious..
Yessir, ambitious it definitely is.

What more can i do to make my profile stronger to break into the league mentioned this year? Do i even have rare chances to make a break?Let's go back to the first point about having a plan that is too ambitious.
Rather than focussing on how you can make your profile stronger (too late for that anyway) you could diversify the risk by looking at schools beyond H/S/W that prefer younger candidates.
Focus on schools where your profile and aspirations fit better.

Did you apply in the last 2 years?
Hey Sameer, Thanks a lot for the response. No Sir, I have never applied.
After all those years in marketing and sales, you might want to think about how and why you'd make a good Strategy Consultant.
Sir, It's a strategy profile that i am targeting in industry (sales/marketing role may be a subset to it, e.g. jobs in Nissan, Samsung strategic management group etc); which is career progression. I am not targeting the profile of strategy consultant.
Drawbacks: You missed one - Second MBA applicant!
Few i know have gone to schools like Yale & Stern for 2nd MBA.. I know that they are not of the same league as H/S/W but then, they went there after lesser work-ex post 1st MBA.

Which are the top B schools that come to your mind that i can target? By the time i join, i will have minimum of 5 years work-ex post-MBA. Will having international work-ex or a small start-up on CV help? Or will additional score of 20-30 in GMAT help? Thanks a lot once again
muuthu Sayshey myself have no work experience and willing to study abroad , so is that we wont be preferred without work experience in gmat ???
GMAT has no restrictions for work experience- scores are valid for 5 years and you can take it a few years before applying.
Wagabond SaysSir, It's a strategy profile that i am targeting in industry (sales/marketing role may be a subset to it, e.g. jobs in Nissan, Samsung strategic management group etc); which is career progression. I am not targeting the profile of strategy consultant.
Fantastic! The connection makes much more sense now.
Few i know have gone to schools like Yale & Stern for 2nd MBA.. I know that they are not of the same league as H/S/W but then, they went there after lesser work-ex post 1st MBA.H/S/W aren't the only schools that can get you what you want. Good schools like Stern and Yale can get you there as well.
Branding is important, but not everything. A lot would depend on your networking skills after you get in. And not to mention the state of the economy.
Which are the top B schools that come to your mind that i can target? Can't recommend specifics based on fit (as I'd need to dig deeper for that). But as a general rule of thumb, do a quick search on Google for schools that accept second MBA candidates and filter out those where you'd have a strong chance.
By the time i join, i will have minimum of 5 years work-ex post-MBA. Will having international work-ex or a small start-up on CV help? Or will additional score of 20-30 in GMAT help?A 40-50 point jump when you are working in a startup in a foreign country would be best :-P
But if that's not possible, I'd order them as follows (priority-wise): quality and diversity of experience (startup or regular MNC), then international work-ex, then GMAT.

Hi consultants
Thanks to all for answering our queries and helping us out.
I want some views and suggestions. I am planning for a 2nd MBA very soon. I have just passed out from an Indian B school and am planning another MBA from top 10 global b schools.
Summary of my profile:
Btech Computer Science (2010)
MBA from IIT Kanpur (2012, Straight out of Btech)
12th: 84%
10%: 80%
GMAT: Yet to be taken
Work Ex: Zero prior to MBA
Would be joining one of the Big 4 Auditing firms as a consultant. Planning to work and gain experience and international experience before I start with my application process.
Extra curricular : This is one of the drawbacks in my profile. Nothing extra ordinary to boast about.
Involved in extra curricular activities like Placement Committee in both Btech and MBA. Organized festivals and wrote case studies during MBA program.
I am interested in Strategic Consulting (McK, BCG, Bain), PE and Investment Banking (in this order).
It would be great if people can give me suggestions on how to build a good profile in next 2-3 years so that I can apply in top US and global B schools for 2nd MBA.
What is the average post 1st MBA work ex do people have before they get admits from H/S/W/Yale/LSB/INSEAD etc?
Would additional certifications in my line of work will help me during my application process?
Thanks
Hello Consultants,
Please evaluate my profile and help me clear some doubts of mine by sparing some of your valuable time.
... It would be a bonus if maybe anyone can suggest few pointers to improve my profile (in co curriculars i guess?). A sincere salute to the job you guys are doing here. Thank you!
Can anyone please help me out with my query???
