Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

I have 5.5 yrs exp...and although my current role is managerial..there is really no progression path availaible in this company...the guy above my position is someone with substantially more experience ( like 20 yrs)..so ill be stuck in this role for the foreseeable future...

Consulting pundits,

Need a pointer, please.

I hold a Bachelors degree, and have over 6.5 years of experience in ERP-SCM modules in a functional capacity. While I understand that this profile is that of an IT Consultant, I would like to shift to a pure Consulting role. At the same time, I would like to leverage these 6 years of hard work , so that I don't get a first grade role.

I was wondering what sort of a profile in Consulting would be a best fit for me. I thought about Operations Strategy, but then that would deal exclusively with the SCM functions, and I would lose out on my
ERP/technology experience. On the other hand, a Technical Strategy role might take my ERP experience into consideration, but my SCM experience might not be leveraged.

I have 2 specific questions:
a)Is there any pure Consulting profile where I can actually put both of these skills to use? And, is there any other(new) area which I can think of switching to, given the nature of my work-ex?
b)At this juncture, how can I gain from an MBA? Will it help me take up a Consulting role, which I would struggle to get now(I have already been asked to do my MBA before thinking about such a role). Or, will it open fresh avenues for me?

thanks!

I was planning on applying to SDA Bocconi this year but held off due to the Euro crisis and impending inclusion of Italy and Spain in the 'bankruptcy' list. However, I recently found out about the MISB Bocconi school opening up in Mumbai this July and was wondering if it is a good option. I am looking to get into higher end consulting and my profile is as below.

GMAT score: 690; AWA score - 5
Citizenship: Indian.
Age: 29
Education: Bachelors in Engineering (IT) from Thadomal Shahani, Mumbai University
Work Experience: 8+ years
Employment: Working for one of the top ITes MNC
Overseas exposure: Has spent 4.5 years in the US working for a North American bank under LOBs such as Commercial and Home Equity.

I am little confuse on whether or not to apply to MISB as there is not much clarity about the campus, program yet. Moreover the application deadline is 30th Apr'12. There are various threads that have been opened up by MISB hopefuls at this portal itself but still awaiting specific details from the school admin. Opening up in Mumbai is definitely a plus though. Still, do you think it is worth going for a new school based on its brand name in Europe? After all it is a 2 year course that will cost 21-22L...

Hey,

2. Would like to have international career.
3. International Brand name on my CV.

2. Would like to complete the degree in a years time

My take :
1. 10 months MBA from INSEAD
2. MS in finance from LBS or any other top international school

Queries:
1. Considering my Profile do I stand a chance of getting into INSEAD?

Yes, but on condition of submitting a very strong application. The key criteria to consider here, besides the strong GMAT/ GPA etc. are- good career progression, an open mindset ( ready to thrive in the higly international environment of INSEAD) and great leadership and interpersonal skills.

You must also address why you need a 2nd MBA and why at this time. The fact that you want to complete the degree in a year's time makes perfect sense as you are considering topping up your knowledge and skills over the previous MBA (and work experience).

2. Would doing MS in finance serve the purpose?

Yes. Your goals are very specific. Leveraging your relevant work experience, CFA degree, and a masters degree from LBS/INSEAD will enable you to get the job you seek in the relevant geography. France wil be tough because of language issues but Singapore (where INSEAD's other campus is) or London will be fine. Job availability situation influenced by economic factors is a separate dimension to consider.

Hi,

My profile is as follows:
10th 87%
12th 85%
engg 53.8% from Pune Univ

Work ex- 22 months as QA in IT with an IB as a client.

extra-currics: Loads of good national level academic prizes, before grad, incl NTSE.
Strong on the cultural activities side in college with some good certs.

I want to move to business consulting or Marketing. I know that they sound bipolar but I can justify both of them based on the application. More biased towards Marketing, but I believe am pretty good with logic and numbers, so will enjoy consulting as well.

Questions:
1. How badly would my grad scores affect if i want to apply to any of the top 10 B schools in the US with a GMAT score of somewhere around 740 (Not taken GMAT yet).
2. C Reject, don't know why ๐Ÿ˜ž . I am waiting for XL and MDI results. If I do not get through XL, should I wait another year, write CAT/XAT again with the only 2 colleges from my list having a realistic chance of calling me for the interviews being IIMC and XL. Also, should I join MDI if I convert it. (I may sound too proud, which is untrue).
3. My budget would not be too high as my father is an army officer and I cannot expect him to shell out such a large sum. What other options should i consider.

Hi ,

I'm planning to apply for US MBA programs starting Fall 2013.

It would be great if you could answer my following queries:-

1.) I passed out BE in 2008 - then because of recession I waited at home for 1 year for my IT company to give me joining and started working in Oct 2009. I did not work anywhere for this duration of 1 year, but I can get some work ex certificates from my friends business, which would add 1 year of work-ex to my profile which wud otherwise be left blank - Do you suggest I should do this ?

Hi Rohit, As you have already got answers to your other queries on another thread, I'll just mention this one.

Generally b-schools do not require you to submit certificates for work experience. So there is no point getting them from friends.

But they would like to see that you were not sitting idle during this period, so it will be great if you can explain that you took up some productive ventures - it could be pursuing an interest/ learning a language/ community work or anything else that kept you busy.

Infact many business schools will ask you to explain any gaps at work since graduation. You can also use the optional essay to explain this.

Hi

My GMAT Score : 660 (Q-49, V-31)
U.G - (8.7/10)
Ex - 2 yrs with Cognizant as a Developer
Post MBA, I wanted to move into IT/Business Consulting

I applied for NUS, NTU, Mays and Schulich. Rejected in all four. :banghead:
Due to personal reasons, I have to do my MBA this year and cant risk to wait another year.

My Questions:

1. Can i apply to some second tier colleges in U.S. If so, can you suggest some schools for my profile?
2. How good is MDIS, Singapore? What are the realistic chances of getting a job after finishing MBA in MDIS?
3. If yo can suggest any other options, that would be awesome.

Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Hi

Hi Slyterin

Maybe you did not put together a strong application, specifically the essays, which could have led to a ding at all 4 b-schools. In addition, I think a higher GMAT score would definately have helped.

From my experience of doing reject analysis for PagalGuy members, I have seen that most applications lack in certain aspects:
1. lack of clear career goals.
2. lack of showing career progression (despite having it).
3. Lack of selecting the right examples, especially in achievement/ failure related essays.
4. Most important, lack of maturity in writing the application.

I am not suggesting that you lacked in any of these components, but it may be worth a thought.

You can also PM/ email me your essays for any one b-school, along with your profile description for a feedback.

1. Can i apply to some second tier colleges in U.S. If so, can you suggest some schools for my profile?

This requires some work at your end- find out more about the programs that are of interest to you and excite you by what you learn about them. But first draw up a list of your own selection criteria and learning needs.

2. How good is MDIS, Singapore? What are the realistic chances of getting a job after finishing MBA in MDIS?

I have not heard about this, so will not be able to give any inputs.

3. If you can suggest any other options, that would be awesome.

The information you have provided here is not enough for me to make any sound suggestions.

My profile is as follow -
10th -75.76
Diploma in Computer Technology - 63.52
BE Comp Sci - 58.50
Paper Presentation & some Extra Curriculum activities certificates.

Now I'm going for MBA. My problem is that I still couldn't decide about Specializations.Surely, I want to stay with IT domain but for that which specialization would be more helpful?
I'm thinking about Operations or Finance.
Also,as I heard from some of my friends,Finance is tough for Engineering students. Is it so?

thanks in advance Sir!

Hi Sir

I have a very average profile..and i am very serious about doing mba/ms.

10th- 52%cbse
12th- 61%cbse
grad- 66% Univ of delhi correspondence after a gap of 3 years....

Work ex- After schooling i have played Cricket 3 years for Subhash club....
and 3 years have worked on my own family business garments store....
Practically its 0 year work exp...

With this profile getting into decent colleges in india is next to impossible, so i started dreaming about gmat to study in USA.
But the dream shattered soon once i got to know the expences..I can't afford it..

Recently got to know about twinning programmes where in a student can study 2nd year of masters in usa and its comparatively cheaper...

So my question is is it worth to opt for such programmes and then study in us?

Hello Sir,

Following are my stats:

10th - 83.6%
12th - 76%
B.E.(ECE) - 82.1% (Anna University, 2009)

Work-Ex: 30 months (as of April'12) in Infosys Ltd. as a Test Engineer, of which 8 months I had spent in Melbourne, working for a leading Wealth Management company to build a good rapport and secure long-term commitment (in IT outsourcing projects) from the company.
I have handled a team of 4, delegated responsibilities, was involved in Test Planning, Test Strategy and Test Estimates for various modules, with time and resource constraint, I had organised meetings with the Business and Development team to discuss on the outstanding defects and possible work-arounds, played an influential role in decision-making on the design and requirements front and maintained a healthy progress in the work. The result was an award from the Client for the Best Performance. I had the opportunity to interact with people from different cultures viz. Asians(excluding Indians), Brits and Australians.

Back at the Offshore, when working for a leading American Bank, I handled a team of 8 and showcased my leadership skills as above and was awarded Best Performance for the Quarter.

Though, on the role, I'm still a Test Engineer, I could showcase my leadership skills by proactively taking up Lead roles when given an opportunity. I could use the brainstorming sessions effectivety to motivate my team to work towards the common goals and had a good success.

On the personal front, I had organised and managed, along with a couple of my peers, the Cultural and Technical fests in my College right from the scratch. Was awarded with the Lead Organiser of the event. Apart from that, I had presented papers at various colleges to showcase my communication and public speaking abilities. Also, I took up the initiative, along with four others, to use our newly built R&D; and work on a Research project (microcontrollers) under our professor's guidance.

From my interest to travel around different places, back in Australia, I organized and managed our tour to various places around Aussie.

GMAT: 700(QA 50/ VA 34) AWA:5

Aim/Goal: Looking forward to do an MBA(in Marketing) at ISB or top US B-Schools and subsequently work for a few years in Industrial products/Consumer products company afterwhich I will want to take up the entreprenurial route.

Questions:
1. I would like to know, if my GMAT(as such) is sufficient to qualify for the addmissions?
2. A few top US B-Schools that I could apply for?
3. The odds of getting through the admissions for the Fall'13

Looking forward to your valuable suggestions/insights!

Cheers,
kc

Hi,

UG: 7.34 (Metallurgy)
GMAT: 760 (AWA 4)
Didnt take TOEFL yet

Work Ex: Working from July'10 as Software Developer. Initially I was in Telecom Industry but recently switched to ecommerce.

I have mainly three questions.

Firstly, I m really worried about the heavy loan I will have to take for this. Is there a possibility to get some sort of financial aid?
Secondly, What can I do in the time I have before the application to make my profile stronger? (e.g. I m planning to do some community service)

Thnx ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
