Job- Software Engineer (18 months)
Will sit for new GMAT. I am new to this foreign MBA thing. kindly guide me how and when to start. which are the colleges to target. what wld be the ideal time to sit for GMAT.
Hi,
Your query is a broad one, but I'll try to answer it anyway.
GMAT scores are valid for a 5 year period. So even if you take the GMAT now, you would be good for the next 5 years, unless you do not score well and plan to retake them (which a lot of candidates do).
Work experience: Generally schools prefer candidates who have atleast 2-3 years of work experience. In the US/ Canada b-schools the work exp. of the class averages around 4 years and in European b-schools, its around 6 years. From this perspective, your 18 months experience may be less, unless you have done exceptional work and out-performed your colleagues. I would assume that as a software engineer, this may be difficult to manage for you.
Therefore, you could continue to work for atleast another year and strengthen your work profile. Look out for opportunities where you get to manage a team and get exposed to the business side (through interaction with functional teams).
Also, get involved in 1-2 extra curricular activities and follow them up seriously. Its good to develop an all-round profile, and these activities will give you an added chance to take up leadership roles outside work.
Lastly, say tuned to the PagalGuy forum, it is a great resource for applicants.

As am interested for 1 year MBA and tis Off-shore campus does that. & one of the main reason am interested is the Budget factor!! it costs less than RM60,000 thats like little less than 10Lakh Rupees.(much cost efficient as compared to few mid tier B-Schools of India)
"cost- efficient" - you may not find an MBA programme as cost efficient if it does not deliver where it is meant to : 1. earn you a desirable job, 2. earn you the b-school brand name and everything that goes with it, like an alumni network, reputation within the industry etc.
I am not aware of this programme myself, so please do not take my comment as a judgement on it, but just some factors that you should take into consideration before enrolling.
Another thought - an MBA from Indian B-schools can just help you more in your career, if you are targeting some Indian companies that recruit from these schools.
But din get much info about the placements prospectives of the Graduated students of this MBA. If any info about the % placement within 3 months from graduate.
This is a step in the right direction - talk to people who have been there - you can ask the b-school itself to connect you to students. Also, you can explore Linked-in to connect to alums or check out for a FB page for the school.

Hi Sameer!
I am interested in pursuing a career in HR. More specifically cross cultural management. I reasoned that the best way to get cross cultural experience is to pursue my post graduate degree in a diverse setting abroad. I have been accepted at University of South Carolina (MHR) and waitlisted at Krannert Business School (MSHRM). Also I am waiting for a decision from LSE for MSc in HRM. After correspondence with Career services at these Universities, I have got the feedback that it is very difficult for international students to get placed abroad and (Acc. to me) the degree value is not held in high regard if I choose to pursue a career back in India. Also, as of now I have a job offer from Credit suisse as an HR Analyst. Now I am in a dilemma if I should take up the HR degree abroad or should I wait for another year(work alongside), prepare for XLRI and then set a career path. Also, could you please give me a realistic view of the HR job market outside India?
Would really appreciate your help.
Btw, my profile is as follows:

My Profile :
GMAT : 720(Q50,V37)
Chartered Accountant (1st attempt)
Target MBA Programs :
Wharton,Stanford,Columbia,HBS,Chicago Booth
Post MBA Field :
Investment Banking/PE
I have few questions with regard to my profile :
1) Whether this GMAT Score is sufficient for entry into Wharton/Stanford (Mistimed my verbal section completely) or should i reappear ?
Generally admissions people like to see balanced GMAT scores. If you are confident that you can improve your verbal score and increase the total to >=750 then you should make another attempt. Otherwise its not worth it. Did you score higher in your practice tests? As you are targeting top tier schools, a 720 will get in the race but will not give an edge.
2) Whether admission office considers CA Articleship as work experience ?
It should be considered as work experience as you are serving clients, doing real, billable professional services work. But, to be sure, you should clarify by writing to the target schools adcom, as b-school policies can vary over this one.
In general, most b-schools would like to see full time work experience in addition to the articleship. Since you would have 3 years of work experience by the time you apply, you should be good.
3) In work-ex do they look for TAG or Job profile ???
What's TAG? if you mean the brand of the firm that you work with, yes, it matters. But the quality of work is what matters at the end of the day.
Also keep in mind that PE is a very difficult job to crack without prior experience in IB. Most PE jobs are obtained off campus. Also IB jobs are few but in great demand. Suggest you reach out to the IB clubs in each of these schools and have a conversation to understand your chances, given your background. From our experience, the student office bearers of these clubs are good guys and would usually take the time to talk to you. Mentioning this conversation in your application will further strengthen it and demonstrate that you have made a incere effort in finding about the school and deciding on the fit. No school wants a candidate coming in with false expectations leading to a ton of frustration right from day one.

I wanna ask one query, I have completed 2.4 yrs of work experience and planning to give GMAT in Jan 2013, I will complete 5 yrs of work exp in Dec 2014 , So I will apply for exe MBA Progs. for batch of 2015-2016.
Considering above scenario can anyone tell if there is flaw in my thinking of giving GMAT like some institutes require that GMAT to be not much older

GMAT Scores are valid for 5 years. So if you do take it early, at most b-schools you would be safe to submit your scores, so long as they are still in the validity period at the time of submission. I would say Jan 2013 is a reasonable time to take the test. If your score is not great, you will also get time to retake it.
In general, its always good to check the FAQ sections of b-school websites, as the application requirements can vary from school to school.

Hi,
I am targeting fall 2013 admissions.
MY PROFILE:
UG - B.Tech, IIT CGPA - 8.6/10
GMAT - 710 (Q51,V35), AWA 5.0
Work-ex

Certifications
Passed June 2011 CFA Level I exam, CFA Institute, USA.
Received the Certificate in Project Management (CIPM) from the Institute of Project Management Certification (IPMC), India in March 2011.
I want to study MBA Finance and am open to both energy finance/project finance or investment banking post-MBA. I can spend a max of 30-40 lakhs.
Please evaluate my profile for ISB/NUS/NTU and also for HKUST/INSEAD.
Thanks & Regards,
prat25
Hi Prat25, Energy Finance is a fairly niche space, so the number of opportunities will be limited. Most of project Finanace opportunities will be typically be available within the Corporate Finance department of a large MNC corporate. When you join an entry level position post MBA, you will typically be rotated across various functions and whether you land up project finance role or not will be a function of your interest and the organization's needs/availability at that point. There may also be specific project finance opportunities available within a company or with a boutique consulting house but those will be few and far between. The point I am trying to make is that it is important to broad base your search. Most likely your MBA exposure will also have an impact on you in terms of your choices. IB is more mainstream but in the current economic scenario, IBs are not recruiting in hoardes as they used to in boom times.
You should explore career statistics of the schools you mentioned to evaluate if they attract firms in the areas of your interest and then decide. Speak with IB/ Finance club members in the schools. They can give you the inside scoop.
In terms of the competitiveness of your profile, all these schools are within your reach. Your GMAT and other info that you have shared do not make you stand out, so you will have to work hard on your essays to make it a compelling and differentiated application. A completed CFA can definitely add some weight to the profile.

Hi, my profile is as follows:
10th: 87%
12th: 62%
B.Tech: 7.305 CGPA (Biotechnology) (I had 6 backlogs in B.Tech)
GMAT: 720
W.E. 36 Months (IT)
International Experience: NO
Extra Curricular: Decent (Volunteering for an NGO from 2 Years, Writing for a national magazine from 1 year)
My concern is can an awfully bad score in 12th stop me by doing MBA from a college (Top 15) in India? Though I am okay for 2 years MBAs and as well as with Executive MBAs of 1 year. (I can wait for another 2 years to get a 5 years of experience if I get a very good college.)
Can I apply and get into IIMs, XLRI, ISB, SJMSOM or MDI?
Can I get a scholarship if at all apply to US or UK universities with good essays?
If at all there's any problem can you please suggest me for improvement in my profile?

Though your XIIth is that good but it isn't very bad.. And you can apply to colleges you mentioned.. I am not sure of ISB criteria.. But if you crack CAT and score well then with your profile you can apply to following colleges..
IIM (B,S are out as your XIIth is not good but you wont be rejected from other IIM's just coz of XIIth except these 2)
XLRI (It shortlists on basis of XAT performance again something you can control and can always defend you low score if u get the call)
FMS,IITB,IITD,MDI,NITIE,SIBM,IIFT are colleges you can aim (all accept CAT, except SIBM and IIFT)
With your GMAT and workex you can even try SPJIMR..
Am not much aware of B-Schools outside India...

If you are applying to the programs like ISB. EPGP (IIM Bangalore), PGPX (IIM A), your 12th grades don't matter. Also, you seem to have been on an upward trajectory since the 12th grades, and these more recent marks would give a better reflection of your academic potential.
You have not mentioned about your work, so its hard to make specific comments. But for a general advice, you should demostrate your leadership capabailities instead of the technical ones in the application. These will help to set you apart from the other applicants in the common IT pool

Try to the admissions team at XLRI and ask them this for the most accurate answer

I have a major concern up my sleeve. I am in a terrible job, its a shift job with no rest watsoever, low pay and really no career growth opportunities. On top of that my bosses have been horrible to me recently for really no fault of my own. Anyway, in short I have been fed up with my job for some time now and I wanted to do an MBA for a career change.
I have been preparing for GMAT for 2-3 months (with the shift timings) and have been scoring decently. Watever time I get I have put it into GMAT but there are times when due to a lack of manpower we are asked to do double shifts and as it is a very tough airport job, I am under tremendous pressure ( and hence very tired after shifts).
The problem is I really had an argument with my boss with the way were treating me and I think its time qo leave the job. I have my GMAT booked on the 7th of May and I think its better to concentrate there. I do not have another job in hand (because really I have no time) but my question is will this situation and leaving the job now reflect badly on myself when I will apply to MBA Schools

You have an interesting profile. I would suggest you writing strong essays to differentiate yourself from the IT pool. This would include logical and well planned career goals and a solid reason for why you want the MBA from ISB.
Sometimes applicants feel that they have written great essays, but they may be missing out on important links/ information. So just remember to get your essays read by friend/ family/ acquaintance who can give you an objective opinion.

mickysinha, most b-schools prefer to recruit applicants who have atleast two years of work experience, and in some schools this is also an eligibility criterion. Most important, they would want to see that you have progressed within your roles. Your post does not clarify how many years you have worked for.
So if you study and complete the GMAT test while you are between jobs then in my opinion it should be okay. But if your break extends to months then its a problem for sure.
Before you make any jumps, you should understand what you really want to do in your career, else you may be in a similar situation even at the new job you take up.
Hope that helps,
