Please suggest what should be my course of action considering the fact that i'll leave this job after 3-4 months.

HSC 80%
B.E 71.3%

I have 2.5 yrs of work ex in software industry. i want to change my field. I never liked this field from the start. Gave CAT attempt last yr during job but was dissapointed. I found it difficult to balance out my CAT studies with my hectic work timings including long commuting hours(14 hrs). So i am thinking of quitting my job to study for CAT 2012. Will this gap be seen innegative light by the interviewers , IIM's later ?
Also wanted to appear for GMAT. what score should i target in GMAT to get into the best Bschools, IIM, ISB? Also if i am targetting June 2013 admission when should i plan GMAT date?
Please guide .
Thanks in advance
Hi,
My objective is to accelerate my carrier in management consulting and I need some clarity on whether to achieve that through MBA (preferable but costly) or a 1 year specialized course e.g. MS in strategic management from HEC Paris (I understand that the pay package would be ~60-70% of what an MBA can get). I also wanted an opinion on the scholarship part (though this may not be the correct place to ask this)
My profile summary:
25, Male
GMAT: 750 (51Q, 40V) AWA 5.5
Experience: 3 years by May, 2012
Analyst in a reputed tier-2 management consulting firm - Past 14 months (and most probably till 2013)
IT manager in a banking domain - 6 months
Worked in an education start-up with IT related projects - 12 months
Academics : Good (IIT with > 8 CGPA + awarded at pan iit level for project + 2 internships abroad)
Extra Curricular: Average (Few major responsibilities in college. Outside college, have done community service but will need to get the certificate)
Others: Have done 2 sem french certificate course (might come handy for HEC and INSEAD)
I haven't done much research on financing my MBA but a crude calculation puts all the $100k Ivy League US colleges outside my budget... Thus, I was hoping to target the following:
1) ISB
2) NUS
3) HEC Paris MBA
4) HEC Paris MS in Strategic Management
I would really appreciate if puyz and consultants could help me in adding more courses to the above list and especially help me in comparing (3) vs (4). Also, I have little idea on how to finance the Ivy League US colleges if I crack them..
Hi Arun,
I am a complete newbee now getting into the GMAT queue. It would be great if I can get your contact number so that I can clarify all my doubts about the same.
Thanks

Hi,
I am currently working in TCS.
I scored 94.76 in CAT dis year.
MY profile is below:
10th-87.5
12th-77.9
Graduation-7.24/10
Extra Curriculars-NCC,2 state scholarships
I was not able to convert any of my calls dis year.So looking forward to scoring even higher n hv set my eyes on the top 20 B-Schools.
What are my chances of getting a call from the iims keeping in mind my average profile.??
What more in terms of certifications(finance) can I do to enhance my profile.??
My Profile : B.E (Hons) + MBA from IMI Delhi (Finance), Work Ex: 30 Months Infosys (Pre MBA experience)
I am going to join Capgemini in an IT consulting profile
My aim is to move from IT to business consulting or strategic consulting side , so i wanted some ideas as to how i can approach it .
You've already taken the first right step. The IT consulting role will hopefully give you many skills that you can use in your post-MBA career as well.
I am planning to go for another MBA (international ) but not sure when is the right time for that ..As you are just moving into your new role, I doubt if you'd be able to get a lot of accomplishments on your CV in the next few months (before application season starts). Probably stick around for a year more, so you have a total of around 4+ years work ex, and a fair bit of it in consulting.
Also if there are some courses or certifications i can pursue online from the likes of HBS/NUS , in domains of strategy or consulting it will be greatThe value from online certifications will be limited. you are better off focussing on getting real world experience.

A common career path is to work in IT consulting for a few years, do your MBA and transition to strategy consulting.
As you have already done an MBA, don't think about another one very soon, but use the knowledge gained from it to excel in your present career. This also holds true because you will have to explain the need for a 2nd MBA in your essays and admissions teams would not want to perceive you just as a degree collector.
Go ahead with the online courses only if they help you perform better in your career. They should be need driven, don't do them because you would like to add them to your resume.
Hope that helps.

The risk of following someone else's instincts on your intended career path could be that you get disoriented with the new career a few months later, and it will then feel like being back to square one.
You will have to take the difficult way out - think and analyse. Ask yourself some important questions:
1. why do I hate my job? Is it my role or is it the company? Will it be better if I can change my role within the company? What could this role be?
Sometimes the words 'bond' and 'contract' can instill negative emotions in us- maybe you would have enjoyed work more if you were not on a bond - think about it if you can look at the bond period more objectively and give it less importance.
2. what do I enjoy doing and would like to do in future? How can I start moving towards it?
3. What experiences/ skills have I gained so far, and how can I use them in my future roles?
This introspection could be a starting point for charting out the next few years.
All the best,

Quick reminder to all -- i've stated very clearly in my first post that your patience is paramount. Please give the consultants some time to reply to your post. Keep re-posting and I will not only keep on deleting but at some point ban you for a couple of days. I understand it is urgent and important to you but you really need to give the consultants a chance to catch-up.

Many people make a switch from IT to management consulting, so this career path is a definate possibility.
You have a fair chance at the b-schools you have mentioned. Often applicants are not able to articulate their career goals well, leading to a reject. But you can work upon this by getting more clarity over the career path- talk to people in organizations you are interested to work in and ask them about how their careers have shaped up, about their roles and responsibilities and future growth.
You should also talk to current students at these schools - possibly you could get linked up to a student/ alum who is making a silimar career change.
Research backed career goals essays are more convincing as you can then talk about a realistic career path, something a lot of applicants do not do.

I don't think of quitting your job to study for CAT/ GMAT as a good idea. The reason is that multitasking / prioritizing/ time management are traits of a potential leader; you would also be doing all of this while you are doing the MBA. So you risk sending out wrong signals by suggesting that you can not handle this workload.
A better strategy is to start your prep early and stay committed to it. If not during the week, then devote sometime to test taking during weekends.
For GMAT, try to score your best (predictable answer
) - 10-20 points above the class average of the particular b-school's is an optimum figure. You can check out the class stats which are there on every b-school's websites. But just for your information, GMAT scores are one criterion used by the b-school, others being your GPA, recommendations, essays etc.Namita at MBA Decoder

I am a working professional having an experience of 5.5 years in IT industry. Puys ! really need some guidance here.

An MBA is the most common entry platform for management consulting careers. For all other (non-MBA) degrees a lot depends on their industry reputation.pakkasir SaysMy objective is to accelerate my carrier in management consulting and I need some clarity on whether to achieve that through MBA (preferable but costly) or a 1 year specialized course e.g. MS in strategic management from HEC Paris
The premium attached to the MBA degree (as you mentioned about), is mainly because of the pre-MBA experience that candidates bring along.
I also wanted an opinion on the scholarship part (though this may not be the correct place to ask this)HEC Paris admissions are pretty competitive. But for the right candidate, they open up their wallets. You'll find an HEC Paris scholarship story on the MBA Crystal Ball blog.
Also, I have little idea on how to finance the Ivy League US colleges if I crack them..Keep an eye on The Mother of all International MBA FAQs PG series. The next post will be related to MBA financing.

As i was looking for some Europe Colleges, got this UK colleges's Off-Shore Campus: "Nottingham Business School, Malaysia Campus".
The course is similar to what is being offered in UK, so pretty good.(As the UK campus is one of the top B-Schools)
As am interested for 1 year MBA and tis Off-shore campus does that. & one of the main reason am interested is the Budget factor!! it costs less than RM60,000 thats like little less than 10Lakh Rupees.(much cost efficient as compared to few mid tier B-Schools of India)
But din get much info about the placements prospectives of the Graduated students of this MBA. If any info about the % placement within 3 months from graduate.
And can some one tell about the work permit in Malaysia after the completion of the 1 yr MBA.
Any info about this College (Gud/Bad/Generic) would be helpful. 😃

Hi,
I have an admit from California State university-fullerton and one from Thunderbird school of Global Management.
i am really confused which one to opt for..???
Pros and cons:
1) Thunderbird's location is where jobs are a bit difficult to search for.Arizona isn't that open for jobs.
On the contrary, fullerton has ahuge job market.Orange County is well known to have decent and ample jobs.
2)Thunderbird is globally ranked and has a brand whereas CSU,Fullerton..??
3) Arizona is cheaper when it comes to living expenses.Fullerton is hell expensive.
4)Thunderbird is costlier and I am getting no scholarships. It is around 50lacs for the entire program including personal expenses.
On the other hand, fullerton is 34 lacs for the entire program including personal expenses.
Please help....
:banghead:
PS: I need to take admission this fall itself....
