Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi Consultants,
Greetings!!

Please suggest the best B schools in US where I have chance to make in with funding or shall i give a shot at GMAT to improve overall profile and hit a big B school.......

Balram, I think if you can prepare better for GMAT and retake it, then this is what you should do.

You would be competing with other Indians, probably with better GMAT scores, whichever b-school you apply to. In this scenario, a good GMAT score would always make your admit chances more favorable.

All the Best

Priyansh,

Your application package is viewed in its entirety by the adcom. Your GPA, GMAT scores, essays, resume, recommendations and the other informations you fill in the form are used together to evaluate your candidacy. So, your chances at any b-school depend a lot on the facts and how you present them in the application.

While your GPA and professional history and any other facts are going to remain a constant, you can work on other aspects to make your profile stronger. Score well on the GMAT, seek out opportunities at work that will make you grow and give a chance to lead, get strong recommendations from people who have observed your work from close angles.

The next big step is the presentation of the facts: you should be able to communicate through the essays, resume and reco, that you are a matured, responsible, one-of-a-kind professional with great leadership potential (ok, this is sounding like a matrimonial statement) and you are the one they should select over the next Indian applicant, also from TCS.

Your extra curricular activities can help you differentiate yourself to an extent, but it seems to me that your involvement is not very active. You can work upon this aspect. Level 1 French at Alliance - c'est elemantaire? get to the higher level.

Hope this helps.

GMAt/CAT: Yet to given. For GMAT I m looking for 700+ and CAT can't predict.

Xth: 65% (Uttar Pradesh Board 2002)
XIIth: 78% (Uttar Pradesh Board 2004)
B.Tech: 75% (Uttar Pradesh Technical University 2009)
Experience: 2.9 year Worked with three companies from 2009.
July 2009 - June 2010 worked with Start up as SAP associate
July 2010 - December 2011 worked with Sopra Group as SAP Engineer
December 2011 - Till Now working with TCS as SAP Consultant.

Currently I am working here in SAP BW.
Education Background: I belong from small town and gave my 10th board exams in a village(my exam center was there) that's why i secured low marks. At that time in UP Board it was good. Done my 12th from Kanpur and

Queries:
1: From the past two year i am afraid of IIMs as they are giving more emphasis on academics. What should i do now?
2: In which area i should focus more to get into good colleges.
3: I am also thinking for MIS from USA but have not good information.
4: I am also thinking for ISB Hyderabad but afraid of large batch size.
5: Whether should i wait for next 2 year and applied for PGPM courses in IIMs.
6: Really confuse and afraid due to lower academics. How can i justify to interviewer.

Thanks everybody who goes through it and give his/her precious time.
Suggestion are welcom.

Hi,

I am applying for my MBA for next fall.. and I wish to learn a business language..so ideally in terms of boosting my profile is it better to learn a language like Spanish or French?

Hi Friend,
I have the following profile:
Class X - 86%
Class XII - 78%
B.Tech - 6.31/10
No work ex.

XAT 2012:
QA - 91.09 %ile
VA - 74.85 %ile
DM - 62.51 %ile

OA - 84.88 %ile

I had attended Interviews for SDMIMD, XIME, KIAMS, Great Lakes. Except for KIAMS, I have been invariably questioned as to why i had backlogs during my B.Tech and the panel members made me feel like i have committed some sort of crime before facing them. Other than that, the interviews went well. SDM's second list has been out and i haven't been offered yet.
Is there any way of tackling this problem so that i can overcome the panelists with an assertive reply?

Please help.

P.S. : I have converted KIAMS, Apprehensive.

Hi,

I am currently working in a Consulting profile and have about 4.5 years of work ex. I am looking at doing a 1 year MBA program and am evaluating different options (ISB and abroad). Could you please suggest which of the foreign programs are most suited if I want to continue in consulting upon my exit from the B School? Hello!

I am an international MBA aspirant. Like many puys here, I want to understand if my profile is well suited for a top level B-School.
how does my profile look, and hopefully combined with a strong GMAT score, how do my chances look to get into B-Schools such as ISB, INSEAD or IE for instance?

Thank you for taking your time out and answering my query!

Shyam, you have the stats in place. As I have pointed out in some replies earlier, you would be considered a strong applicant if you put together a strong application, which means - 1. have well placed career objectives, 2. can show career progression, 3. show the admissions team that you have done sufficient research about their MBA program and are convinced it will help you reach your career objectives.

At this point, while you are preparing for the GMAT, start researching at the programs you are interested in and determine how they fit into your career plans/ you fit into them.

Retrospect, analyse, introspect! After you are done with these, make a plan about what you want and how will you achieve it. Getting back to work could be one option.

Hi Lalith, you are right in what you know about the education criteria - a lot of American bschools accept the 3 year undergrad degree.

What you need to do now is to make your own list of b-schools where you will apply, based on your education/ career needs. Most b-school websites have a FAQ section in the admissions pages that will tell you whether they require a 15 year/ 16 year education. This will help you decide on a final list of b-schools where you want to apply (5-7 is an optimum number). You can also write to the admissions committees of particular b-schools if this information is not available online or if you are seeking an exemption from the 16 year restriction.

B-schools prefer a work experience of 2 or more years, so you are good on that front. They would also expect to see career progress and achievements, and I hope you can demonstrate these through the essays, reco and resume.

All the best,

Sid, most of your fears are misplaced, because b-schools generally do not go as far back as the 10th and 12th grades to evaluate you. They require your undergrad scores and would compare them in reletivity, to the rest of the class. So, if you studied in a college which gave good grades stringently across the board, then you don't suffer from this in comparison to other candidates who had an easy grading system in their colleges.

2: In which area i should focus more to get into good colleges.

You have talked about many fears in this short space- fear of interview, academics, large class size etc. etc. B-schools look out for the fearless kind- those who are confident, take risks, and like to achieve. So this is something you can work upon.

Another problem area - you have been through 3 jobs in 3 years - that was quick! B-schools also like the stable-at-job types, so rein in those jumps. Look out for some quality experiences within your present job, and be ready to explain the job shifts.

I am also thinking for MIS from USA but have not good information.
5: Whether should i wait for next 2 year and applied for PGPM courses in IIMs

There are tons of resources available online to search for MBA and Masters programs- you can look at the b-school pages on Financial Times, US News, Top MBA to begin with.

If you can get some stability on the job front within the next two years, then applying to IIM will be a good choice.

mbagirl, this can be:
1. based on your interests towards a particular language - attend trial classes of both and then decide.

2. based on where you want to study - I guess you are on the forum because you want to get an MBA degree. So if its INSEAD or HEC, it will be good to know French. If its IE or some other b-school in Spain, then Spanish will help.

3. based on where you want to work- Spanish for US, Latin America, Europe. French for Canada, Middle East, Europe.

Hope that helps. :0
