Hi,

I am a 2010 passout from a top engineering college in the country. Currently I am working in a startup which is into developing mobile phone applications. As of this date I have 20 months of work ex. - no international work ex.

Profile -

10th -86%, 12th -85% , Grad - B.E.(hons.) in Mechanical Engineering with GPA - 7.94/10

EC - NTSE scholar, play synthesizer and was part of a music group based in my hometown that used to give live performances. Event co-ordinator for an event in college fest. treasurer of a college club, elected as member of mess council in college etc. (nothing too big)

Job - working for mobile banking/brokerage app development for a big global bank. promoted 2 times since joining the company after passing out from college in June '10. Love my job, but do not picture myself in this for the long term!

Career Aspiration - interested in a career in finance. Asset management and likes. thinking of giving CFA L1 in december.

Gave a GMAT test on Princeton Review site to assess my level before starting a proper prep and got a 680 (q50, v34).

Questions - 1. How should I go about my preparation esp. verbal section? Should I plan to take it before the pattern change?
2. I belong to a middle class family and getting a big loan could be a issue. Keeping that in mind and my career aspirations, please suggest some b-schools that I can target.
3. By the time of application, I will only have 2+ yrs of work ex. Is it prudent to wait for another year before applying?

Hi, Let me give you a general answer about the role of clubs in a b-school. Broadly, there are some categories of clubs: 1.Industry/career focussed clubs (consulting, healthcare, marketing, finance etc.), 2. Cultural clubs ( India Business Club, Asia Club), 3. Special Interest/ social Clubs ( Net Impact, Toastmaster's, Wine Club, Partners' club, sports- related clubs, the list goes on....).

To answer your query, I'll stick to the professional clubs- they are an excellent place for you to network with people with interests similar to yours. So as a wannabe consultant, if you join a consulting club in any b-school, you can take up a leadership position (clubs are student led), arrange or be part of seminars by field experts and corporate honchos, organize or participate in events, inter-school competitions (consulting cases etc. ), career treks, get help in summer internships (not there at ISB, though they do have shorter consulting projects), and finally get help with your recruitment. The benefits correspond to your involvement.

In a nutshell, all of these will give you tremendous opportunities to network (how to network would be one of your biggest takeaways from your b-school tenure).

There are numerous ISB related threads on Pagal Guy - check out ISB Connect, where Roshan has very generously helped people get connected to students at ISB- you can get in touch with a position holder at the ISB consulting club to find out more about specific activities taken up by them.

Hello Consultants,

I gave my GMAT yesterday.... got a 680... q49v34.... five institutes I sent the scores to were Yale, Columbia, Oxford, Said , HEC.....
School marks r pretty ok... but I noticed that none of these clgs ask us to fill school marks in their forms....
Engineering marks r on the decent side...71%.... employed in a software company and a have work ex of 3 years....
How do u guys fancy my chances ??? Will I be able to get an interview for these clgs ???

Hi Counsellors,

Here's my profile :

Std. 10 (CBSE) - 90.2
Std. 12 (CBSE) - 92.4
BA Hons. (Economics), DU- 54.6%
Work Ex. - Have been working in my family owned business for the last 3 years.

ECA - I have been a performer and an administrator during my college days. Organized International Economic Summits consecutively for 2 years. Was the Joint Secretary of the Association then. Actively involved in the Dramatics Society of College & School. I also run an NGO.

I had a very high score in my high school, but have only 54.6% score in my undergrad in BA Hons. Economics from Delhi University, India. Have been to various forums but haven't got any credible source to convert my grad score to GPA.
What chance do I stand in the ivy league colleges provided I get a 720 + GMAT score? Also which Schools should I target given my longer goal is to enter into the political arena?

Will be grateful if you can help me allay my fears (low grad score hampering my chances in BSchools) & give a direction to my career.

Hi,
I have a B.E degree (Electronics & telecomm), which i passed with distinction.
I am looking for an MBA from ISB Hyderabad in the academic year 2013-2014.
I have been working in an IT major as a Senior Software developer since last 2.5 years(3.5 yrs by the time i apply.)
I have worked across several technologies and platforms.

I would like to move into IT consulting for which i want to pursue my MBA.
I will be giving my GMAT in the coming time.(getting mock scores in the range of 680-730).
Have some co curricular activities at school/ college level and other activities to show apart from work.

Please let me know about my chances for ISB and any other thing required to streghten my profile.

Thanks.

Garv, you have a couple of good things going for you - a good GPA, hopes of a great GMAT score if you can push it to the higher side of your mock scores range and optimum work experience. I would assume that working on many technologies and platforms, you have also had a chance to work with different and multi-functional teams. Morevoer, the 3.5 years of work expereience will give you some opportunities to lead teams.

Your career aspiration for IT consulting is well aligned with what you have done so far.

The rider is that there are many other applicants with the same profile as yours, so competition would still be very tough for you.

Thinking early about the application gives you a chance to work upon aspects in your profile, which can later help you differentiate from the similar candidates. For example you can continue to seek leadership opportunities at work and in extra curricular activities, take initiative to learn and do new things and make some impact on whatever you take up.

At the time of applying, its not just having a repertorie of experiences to talk about, but also how well you present them, that will get you closer to the coveted admit. Your career progression and goals, achievements and reasons to do an MBA from a particular b-school need to be well articulated within the essays, and these can be the place to put a unique personality to an over represented profile stats.

So use your coming months wisely to work on these points.

Priyansh,

You have not mentioned anything about your work experience. Your stats are pretty much like what a whole lot of Indian applicants have, so you should start thinking of aspects - personal or professional - that will help you to differentiate from the rest. Now is the time to strengthen these aspects.

Sid, Your Grade 10-12 scores do not count for an MBA outside India, and you are right about the grad scores being low. I am not very sure how much your grad percentage will pull your application down at an Ivey league, despite earning a great GMAT score (above 730) . One way to mitigate some of the negative rub-off could be to take up a few quant heavy courses (like accounting and stats) - I think you would have that option with DU.

If all your ECAs date back to college days, then you should get going actively on these - I assume college was 3 years ago. If you are still active at the NGO, I guess you have plenty of opportunities to make a real impact (this is big stuff for the top b-schools).

Regarding family business- hope you have managed to grow the business in some ways, during your involvement. Talking about your family business can tilt your application either ways- if your don't show achievement and growth, adcoms can be sceptical of your role there; if you can show these and say how an MBA will help you grow the business, you'll remain in the game.

Also, you may consider shortlisting people who can recommend you- vendors, clients, consultants.

Your long term goal of a political career - sounds good to me but the adcom may not be convinced (unless the business is a policy/ politics related consultancy). Besides you may get better and free career guidance from Akhilesh Yadav ( or Rahul Gandhi ??) rather than from an MBA!!!

So, in effect, you need to tread the 'career history - short term career goals - long term career goals- why MBA?' path extremely carefully.

Hope this helps!

Hi

I wish to pursue MBA abroad.

how much minimum will I have to score in GMAT to get an admit in the ivy .
league.

I have read that one needs good recommendations too.
I must confess, I dont know such people who could write me some great recommendation for an International B school.
And with the Govt Bank I am in, I can hardly hope to get any recommendation.
Nor have I done some trail blazing thing in the past which can be highlighted in the recommendation or in the essays.

i know that study aid can be managed, loans can be taken for studies abroad once u get an offer.

but the doubts that I have enumerated above pull me back to think of giving GMAT or even think of foreign education.
I feel that inspite of spending time and money, if I fail coz of the essays and recommendations.....it is better not to try at all.

Kindly help I feel confused.

Hi Consultants

I am intersted in doing MBA from CANADA.

How do you rate Haskayne School of Business (Univ of Calgary) in terms of placements and job oppurtunities after my studies

Hello!

I am an international MBA aspirant. Like many puys here, I want to understand if my profile is well suited for a top level B-School. Here's my profile:

X: 90.8%
XII: 91.6%
B.Com: 86%

I am working for a Big 4 Accounting Firm, and have been employed by them for almost 3 years (short by a few months). By the time I apply, I guess my work experience will be more than 3 years. Also, I have passed the Certified Public Accountancy Exam (CPA). In the long-term, I want to enter the consulting field (financial consulting).

In terms of extra-curricular activities in school and college, I believe I have a fairly strong set of activities (a position in a college association, vice-captain of the football team, and writing scripts for short films, and taking up a couple of initiatives at my Firm - both social, and a learning and development role).

I understand I may not have given a very detailed picture of my profile, but considering the above, how does my profile look, and hopefully combined with a strong GMAT score, how do my chances look to get into B-Schools such as ISB, INSEAD or IE for instance?

Thank you for taking your time out and answering my query!

hello consultants,

i have a few queries
1 - how good are the chances of changing the country after MBA ... i mean can i move to US/Asia after a MBA from UK/France?
2 - i m confused abt the cost of some of the programs..
eg - for cambridge(judge) the cost is around USD 50-60k but many sites suggest to have an annual budget of 25k only for this course, given that it is only a 12 month course i dont understand the difference. is it because of scholarships??

also please rate this profile for judge/HEC/ISB/ -
X - 89
XII - 85
grad(NIT) - 8.2
GMAT - 700
age - 25
WE - 1.5 yrs IT , 3 yrs as an operations associate in ZS (non-IT role) .. hopefully an international stint as well
(PS - this is not my current status.. bt i m well on course for this profile)

thanks

EDIT : post MBA - i m nt planning a career shift (already done that ) and would like to continue with consulting.

Hi,
I am Deepak and looking for admission in ISB / Insead.
My Profile:
GMAT: 680 (QA 48 VA 35) & AWA: 5
Xth: 79% (WB Board)
XIIth: 72% (WB Board)
B.COM. 66% (Calcutta University
CA and CS (CA Inter: 34th Rank)
CFA: Level 1
Experience: 7+ years excluding 3 years of articleship

I started my career in Big4 and still working in Audit division mainly concentrated in Telecom and Technology clients. Have good knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP.

My qutries to you are:
1) I have applied in ISB for 2013 batch in R2, but got reject on Feb 15, 2012. I worked well over my essays and interview was also decent, spent arnd 45 min. inside interview room. Didnt knew, what goes wrong. So, want to understand on what areas I should concentrate and How can I differentiate my profile from application made in previous year?
2) Whether I stood any chance for Insead Admission. Keeping in view my GMAT score at lower end of the thread and with no international exposure, I want to check, if I apply to Insead, any chance is there? Though I am working on various global engagement, but all those are worked on via videa conferencing and telecon. So dont know, whether Insead considers it as International exposure.
3) What can go against my Profile and how can I rectify it?

Your suggestion are very precious for me. Please do spare some time for me. Thank you very much.

Let the start be "Life is in a mess" to aggravate my condition. I am a mechanical Engineer who has 2yrs plus experience as a Marketing Executive in an MNC. Left my job to chase the CAT and landed 88..... Have a few colleges but they are not worth. Just tell me what should I do??

Hi
I am in doubt whether or not should I go for GMAT this year. I need an assessment on my profile as to whether my profile is suitable for application to some of the top b schools in the world this year. If not, which b schools would be the best available choice for me?

Vijayuch, spend some time on understanding:
1. what do you want to do in the next 3-8 years?
2. How will you use your current knowledge and skill base in this intended career? and what additional skills will you require?
3. How will an MBA help you to achieve the future career goal? If you can get the required knowledge/ skill base in your present jobs, then you probably do not need an MBA at all.

Once you have some clarity over these questions, you would be better placed to set a timeline for taking GMAT and which schools to target.
