Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi

It was really an enriching exercise going through the forum here.

First, a little about my profile-
GMAT: 760
Xth: 95.2
XIIth: 92.8
Graduation: 8.24/10 (IIT) :-(
Extra-currics: Medium-strong
Work experience: 7 months in management consulting start-up

I am eyeing the top 10 US B-schools and INSEAD. I wish to apply after 2 years of job experience. I think my profile lacks in community-service and graduation GPA. Can you guide me on how to make the best out of 1 or 1.5 years of work to get into the Ivy League schools? I am ready to do infinite hardwork

Thanks

Hi there first of all terrific work being done here ....now i am actually kinda confused about applying to IIM B and IIM L for the PGP course, as they are the only ones i think who give weight-age to different sections of a profile when compared to all the other IIM's, as i will apply thru the NRI category my GMAT score is too low, so it would be really helpful if u go through my profile and suggest me if i should apply or will it just be waste of cash, now here goes.....

X & XII (CBSE)---82% frm kuwait
Grads---6.7/10 (BE Mech, frm a Dubai coll)
GMAT-610(Q-47, V-25)
A lot of extra curricular activities, even organising many events in college.
wrk ex- 26 months, currently working in Kuwait as a design engg

i am gonna give gmat again but by that time i would have missed the deadline....so i was just curious that do i stand a chance fr a call frm IIMB with this profile, as i know the profile isnt the best, but would be helpful to know different views on it, coz you never know......thnx in advance and would seriously love the help.

Sansd,

I was wondering why you want to do an MBA now? Its always helpful to have a plan in place - an MBA is an expensive affair and you would be away for two years and from earning a salary. So how does the MBA 'now' fit into your career plan for future?

Looking at your stats, I would say that the IIM may be a tough call for you. At IIM B, the GMAT scores of the current 8 international students range between 720-770. Similarly at IIM B, they want GMAT in the 80% percentile.
Being an enginner, you are in a very competitive pool - 90% of the IIM PGP classes consist of engineers.

I would suggest that you don't rush yourself through this. Strengthen your work profile by working 1-2 more years, improve your GMAT and apply later with a stronger profile (if you still feel the need for it).

Also, college ECAs are a definate plus, but they need to be followed up with extra curricular activities even when you start working. So keep it going on that front as well.

All the best,

Hello all awesome consultants out there !

I am looking for one right now and would certainly love to talk ! A little background

Gmat : 760

Acads : IIT , B.Tech ( computer science) , 6.95 gpa
Co-curricular : started a non-profit, started several programs at college which are now part of the campus culture, won best actor award, organized events at annual cultural and technical festivals and more.

Work Ex : 2.5 years. Startup 1 ( about 1 year ) , About a year working in US and now in India working on my Startup 2. First one didn't work though we did have frb san francisco as paying client. Now working on the next one and about to change the world !

MBA hasn't been an easy decision to make. I didnt jump into the CAT rat race right out of college as I didn't see a point in doing something just because everyone else is doing it. How can you know you want an MBA right after 4 year of undergrad courses when you haven't seen any of the outside world ? After a lot of soul searching, I figured this is the next step and takes me close to where I want to be long term.

Having said that, I did appear for CAT 2011 while preparing for GMAT and surprisingly got interview calls from a few IIMs including IIM Caltutta. This certainly makes the game interesting.

With this as my background, I would like an honest assessment about my chances at top US B-Schools ( Harvard preferred as some of the smartest people I lived with in Boston were from there ) and I have seen the campus and the city.

Looking forward to thoughts/advice/guidance.

Kind Regards

If you are taregtting the top schools and with relatively less experience, a top-tier consulting brand (M/B/B) would've helped. But if that hasn't happened, no worries. Try to gain some good experience in the current firm and ensure you can talk about similar experiences when it comes to consulting skills, business knowledge, client management interaction etc.

I think my profile lacks in community-service and graduation GPA. Can you guide me on how to make the best out of 1 or 1.5 years of work ...
If your consulting roles gives you some personal space (tough in the initial years), then get involved in anything outside work. Doesn't have to be an NGO only. Could be anything that you are passionate about. If that experience can help you build new skills, then even better.

I am ready to do infinite hardwork
I like the spirit. Get off that little scooter and start jogging. Start building your stamina coz it's going to be a long road till you get the good news.

Good luck.

If you had a client in the previous startup, I think you'e already started changing the world. 'Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear'.

Happy to see that your line of thinking is so different from Mitu's*.

Top US schools? Yeah, sure, why not!
Harvard? Ummm...to be honest, with the current level of info, it's tough to say.

HBS gets tons of high-GMAT scorers, IITians and entrepreneurs. And the Adcoms do like all of that. But the differentiator within that elite applicant pool really is, who's changed the world (or will change it) slightly more than the others.

If you are going to stick to the startup world and if it's a tech driven venture, sooner or later you'd need moolah to expand. Though international VCs have come into India, their appetite for risk is still low.

You'd be better off graduating from the US as you already have a feel for what the country, the culture and Paris Hilton have to offer. After that whether you get back to India (my vote goes here) or stick around there is your call. But you'd have a strong network to tap into.

sudeep,

Your reasons for wanting an MBA are quite valid. A lot of people in the IT industry like to move away from their technical profiles into other functions within the industry. One good way to start your search is by looking at various rankings by Businessweek, US News, FT and The Economist. Most of the top schools have great general management programs (or a strategy concentration) ans reading up on them will help you form your initial ideas.

Based on this research and with a shortlist of the b-schools you like, you can start to attend their offline events, online chats, and also go visit a few as you are already in the US.

With regards to strenthening your profile, b-schools like candidates with some managerial experience, which I guess you are already getting as a team lead. Other than this, its always good to have some extra curricular interests. So if you are not involved in anything outside work, now is the time when you can get involved in 1-2 volunteering/ personal initerest activities.

bhargavi, you already know the answer. A ton of Indians apply to the Asian b-schools on your radar and even though the GMAT score there may range close to 650-670, there are a lot of Indians with 700+ scores (and you are competing with them).
So having a higher GMAT score would definately help.

Hope that helps,

What kind of courses are you thinking about? Masters in a particular field/ MBA? Are you looking for a course in India or want to study abroad?

MBA Decoder

Hi everyone

I need some career guidance from you guys.

I am in second year B.Com in one of the best colleges in south mumbai. I am also doing CA and have already passed IPCC group 1 and awaiting result for group 2.
I have started with my articleship in a mid-size CA firm in the field of taxation.
I want to get into investment banking or related fields like PE, VC.
I also want to do MBA later on.
How should i go about it? My extra-curricular activities are almost nil because of articleship and tuitions(i hardly get any time).
I would be becoming CA by 2015(if i clear finals in first attempt).
Should i try for MBA directly after that or get some work experience and then go for?

This is an extremely informative thread. Kudos to it
Have been reading thru the thread for almost an hr so as to not ask repetitive questions. But, frankly each profile is diff and i ended up skipping pages..

So here goes my profile -

X - 85%
XII - 75%
UG - 75.3% (B.E. Polymer) 2008 pass out
W.Ex - 1 yr in Tata AutoComp as an engr. trainee. I left the job to join my Dad's partnership business. Its a manufacturing firm and i am handling 1 major PSU client exclusively, right from its designing to manufacturing upto the point till i have to nag them to pay us!
Its been over 2 and half yrs am working in the business and now i feel i should start thinking about doing my PG. Had initially thought of MS while i was a fresher and gave the GRE in 2009 (Q- 680; V- 560; AWA- 4.0). But, decided not to because i felt arming myself with some industrial experience would hold me good (Also, score was dismal! )
Now, 2 years later and not so fresh and armed with experience i'm thinking of MBA instead of MS, because I want to eventually either take over my dad's business or start my own business.
How should i go about this? Should i look for general MBA programs or one's designed for entrepreneurs? I am mainly looking to do my MBA abroad, not country-specific. How do European Business schools compare to that of US? Are the lesser known European schools good, say Norway/The Netherlands?
I would definitely looking to work in the same country for a couple of years before starting my own, mainly to gain some experience about how foreign companies work and using that experience for my business.

Thanks a lot.

Hello Sir,
I'm currently in the 8th semester of Engineering. I plan to take my GMAT any time in December 2012. But I'm not just aiming for an MBA abroad. I'd rather take a MS in General Management/Finance/Accounting/HR course. Also, can you please tell me if these courses as good enough as an MBA? What's the difference between these 2 degrees? I'm mainly aiming for universities in The Netherlands (or if not then UK). Most of the universities there don't ask for work experience to be eligible for the MS course. But since I've already been placed, I'll be joining my job in June 2012. The season in most European B-schools begins in September. So, I'm aiming to join in Sept 2013. By that time, I'd be having a more than 1 year work experience. With this, will I be good enough for a MS degree course? My academics are average. 89.33% (ICSE) in Xth, 83.8% (CBSE) in XIIth. But my CGPA in graduation is very poor. It's just 6.7/10 (B.Tech in Mining Engineering, NIT Raipur). Most of the extra-cirricular activities were of school level. I'm mainly aiming at Rotterdam School of Management, TiasNimbus, Nyenrode University, Maastricht University and Amsterdam Business School in The Netherlands. I may look for other universities too. And I've not yet searched anything about the universities in the UK. Please tell me about what kind of score do I need in GMAT for MS (and/or MBA) in these universities. Thanks a lot.

Hi All,
I'm a B.Com Graduate with 70 % Distinction and later did M.com (Distance Education) from OU (HYD) with 60%. I got around 4Years of Experience in Finance Feild. Right now I'm planning to MBA from top 50 Univ. I tried my luck in CAT but I couldnt get good %le. So I started GMAT Preparation and now I got to know from few of my friends that Most of the MBA Univ Abroad doesnt accept 3yr Bachelor Degree and doent even consider M.Com Distance Education. So Could you pl suggest me with my Acads and good GMAT Score will I be able to get into any of the TOP Univ in USA/UK. Pl Advise
SSC 82%
10+2(Inter- MPC) 82%
BCOM 70% Distinction
MCOM (Distance) 60% from OU
Experience :- 4Years in Finance Sector

Thanks

Hi!
I've been working in the IT industry for 4.5 years now, and just got into a Business Analyst role. I gave CAT 2011 and got 99% in the verbal section and just 74% in quants/data interpretation one. I've done BE CSE (7.94/10 CGPA), and 10th American School (89%), 12th(90%, US High School Diploma/IB Certificate).

I'm looking to give GMAT this year (after polishing math up a bit).

I'm primarily targeting the Asian B-Schools, as they are nearer to India and because I want a job back in India after the MBA. I'd like to know your opinion on good B-Schools in Asia that are well known, especially for churning out consultants? I've done some research on my end and came up with the known names NUS, Nanyang... but I'd like to know your opinion just in case I've missed out on something.

Regards!
