shashwatdce,

You have a great score, and the good thing is that when you apply some years later, you will not need to bother on this front (unless, ofcourse you begin to aim for a 760).

Michelin is setting up a plant in Chennai. I am part of the 1st team involved in setting up the plant and to take up the manufacturing in the next 2 years. I'll be undergoing on the job training for 1.5 to 2 years in their plant in USA.

After coming back, i'll help set up the plant as the 1st batch.

Kindly advise me on how to improve my profile to get admission within next 1 year, that is in batch starting in 2013.

At this time you should look out for opportunities within your job to learn fast and do great work. I think as a reliability manager, you would deal with many functions of people as well as do operations management. The skills you would get from these would be helpful for you in your career later. So work with an open mind right now with the aim to make a positive impact in what you do. If you come back to India 2 years later to set up the Chennai plant, that again will give you a lot of exposure and probably kindle your entrepreneurial instinct.

The MBA is a need based education - after getting this exposure at work, if you feel the need for it, then go for it at that time.

Hi. I had some more doubts regarding my application procedure for MBA.
To begin with I would like to post my profile:
Graduation : Bachelor of computer Science (University of Pune)-2010- 67%
Post Graduation: Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management 2011
Work Experience: 2 years with my own start-up i.e. Integrity Financial Consultants based in Pune working in Financial consulting and equity, derivatives, commodity and currency sub broking.
Out of my 2 years of work experience one year was during the course of my PGDF during 2010-2011 since that was a weekend course. I will be completing 2 years of work experience by July 2012.
GMAT- 600/800
Toefl- 98/120
GPa: 3.5+
I had applied for MBA Fall 2011 to some US universities namely: Claremont Graduate University, Drucker school of mgmt, Fordham university NY,Univ of california @ irvine the paul merage school of business, Hofstra university long island. I applied very late last year i.e For the round 4. Hence i got rejected from all universities but Hofstra. I decided not to take hofstra as I didn't find the course credible enough.
This time I am applying for the Fall 2012.
The universities I have shortlisted are:

Claremont Graduate University, Drucker school of management LA.
Loyla Marymount university GSB LA
Montrey Institute of international studies
Cal State university Fullerton-mihaylo school of business
Pepperdine University- The Graziadio School of Business and Management
University of California- Davis- Graduate School of Management
Fordham University NY

Out of these universities, the first and the last one i.e. Drucker and Fordham I am reapplying. I had some queries based on the same.
1. Is my score and work exp good enough to apply to these schools?
2. What are my chances of getting a scholarship in these schools as I am applying for the early round?
3. For these universities can i use the same LORs by the same recommenders?
4.For the universities I am re applying to, my essay content will change or get added but major content will remain the same. Is it OK?
5.I had 5 sets of LORs taken on 8Th February 2011. Is it OK if with the same date I can send these application now i.e in December 2011?
6. My recommendations are all 3 from my teachers. Do I need to take one from my business partner as well?
7.Do you recommend any other universities suitable for my profile?
Kindly reply to my answers at your earliest. Awaiting earnest reply.
Thank you in anticipation,

Hi,

First thing first, Thanks for this wonderful thread.

I need help in understanding my chances at Top 10 B-Schools (Sept 2013 entry). Below are details of my profile:

Academics
10th & 10+3 : 80%
B.Tech : 71 % (Gold Medalist)
M.tech (IIT D) : 8.44 (GATE AIR 46)
GMAT : Not yet attempted but sure abt 700+

Work Ex
6 years (on sept 2013) , Designation: Manager(Development), basically working on product development in automobile Company (5 years with automobile company and 1 year with SIEMENS, on site project execution). Few publications, but in the conference or magazine very well acknowledged in the field (E.g. SAE, IEEE, ATZ etc)

Extra Curricular
Presently working as "SBI Youth For India fellow". Its a 1 year fellowship, with a focus on rural development, by working on and staying in rural area. On a sabbatical from my present employer and will be rejoining company from March 2012.

About hobby, worth mentioning is paragliding other than that reading and poem writing, traveling etc..

My area of interest is Strategy and planning, and that will be my choice of post MBA work profile.

So as mentioned earlier, my queries are:
1. How fair are my chances in Ivy-8 school? if not what else I need to add in my profile? (as I have got around 1 year)
2. Except few financial obligation (Probably loan for this venture) and exposure to international work culture, I do not have any reason to stay in the foreign country (at least as of now!!!) and will prefer to work in India, so what all will be my options to work in India with the mentioned area of interest?
3. How big is the "financing your MBA" issue for Top 10 schools?
4. Any other suggestion about any other option I can look for.

Thanks for all your time and efforts. (Moderator + Consultant)

1. Is my score and work exp good enough to apply to these schools?
Tushar saheb, I'm not entirely convinced about why you might need a second MBA so early? Also not sure about what you want to do post MBA. It's a tough economy out there, so be aware of the pros and cons of choosing programs that are just on the periphery of (or outside) the top-100 schools.

2. What are my chances of getting a scholarship in these schools as I am applying for the early round?
Don't know about these schools, but in general, the lower ranked univs provide ample scholarships to attract students. But don't make that your primary filter criterion.

3. For these universities can i use the same LORs by the same recommenders?
By that if you mean, the same 2 guys writing recos for all schools, sure you can.

4.For the universities I am re applying to, my essay content will change or get added but major content will remain the same. Is it OK?
That approach wouldn't work with the competitive schools. For the ones on your list, I can't say.

5.I had 5 sets of LORs taken on 8Th February 2011. Is it OK if with the same date I can send these application now i.e in December 2011?
Not a good idea. Better to get fresh recos.

6. My recommendations are all 3 from my teachers. Do I need to take one from my business partner as well?
Again, not a good idea. Apart from your academic prowess (and you have first class for your undergrad and postgrad degrees), Adcoms want to know about your managerial and business potential too.

7.Do you recommend any other universities suitable for my profile?
Considering that you already have an MBA from India, I'd say give serious thought to the timing of apps (I think you are rushing into it too early) and the post-MBA goals. Also see if you can get the GMAT score higher. Then choose the schools accordingly. Don't reverse engineer the choice based only on your GMAT score.

Thank you for your reply. No I don't have an MBA already from India. Its just a 1 year part time PGD course in Finance. And 3. For these universities can i use the same LORs by the same recommenders? means I am reapplying to one of the schools so can i send the same LOR with the same content and same recommenders as i did for them last year? About professional LOR i had asked the univ representatives @ the Qs mba tour, they had said that if your company is big then you should take professional LORs. But mine is my own startup with 5 employees and 1 business partner. Hence I have taken LORs from my teachers. Will doing an MBA from lower ranked colleges be beneficial for me? Because post MBA I plan to continue with my own startup only by expanding it. But I don't mind working abroad also just to recover the costs in 1-2 years.

Also the two state universities i.e CSU at fullerton and san bernardino according to my research have credible standing in placements and internships during MBA. I have particularly chosen these universities on the basis of curriculum i will be studying there. More than fees or scholarships or rankings I think the content I will be studying is more important to me. Is my vision correct? Or do i need to consider any other factors as well?

No I don't have an MBA already from India. Its just a 1 year part time PGD course in Finance.
Thanks for clarifying. My suggestion for having a strong rationale to go there doesn't change. Somewhere in there you mentioned that you want to continue with your startup. Ensure that the 2 year break will accelerate the process, not slow it down.

You've also mentioned that you 'won't mind' working abroad. Unless you have a strong plan to land a job there, it'll be more a question of 'won't mind coming back to India'. Probably I'm misinterpreting the semantics here.

I am reapplying to one of the schools so can i send the same LOR with the same content and same recommenders as i did for them last year?
The reason I said that's not a good idea is because it gives the impression that there hasn't been much change from the last application or you are just looking at it as a tick mark on the list to reduce work. Neither of those is good, specially when you are a reapplicant. Go with fresh recos.

About professional LOR i had asked the univ representatives @ the Qs mba tour, they had said...
Jab miyaan biwi raazi... But I'm still wondering how those schools are going to judge your business potential. Another reason that makes me a little unsure about the choice of schools.

Will doing an MBA from lower ranked colleges be beneficial for me?
The ranking of the school isn't as important as what you are expecting from it. There are many low or unranked schools that may be able to give you what you want. Just makes it a little tougher to find those gems as many are small and have little info about them available in the public domain. So independent review and analysis becomes very critical (like you have done I presume).

Also the two state universities...have credible standing in placements and internships during MBA. I have particularly chosen these universities on the basis of curriculum i will be studying there.
If you've done your research about these schools like placements, quality of teaching etc, then go for it.

More than fees or scholarships or rankings I think the content I will be studying is more important to me. Is my vision correct? Or do i need to consider any other factors as well?
As Dhanush would ask..Vision correct-u? Yes, that's a good start. Content of the program is one of the critical factors. The others are quality of your peers in class, the learning and career opportunities available to you on campus and outside, brand value of the school, your overall expectations from the program.

1. How fair are my chances in Ivy-8 school? if not what else I need to add in my profile? (as I have got around 1 year)

Haresh, To answer your questions:

1. Your chances are good as you have the right concoction of ingredients - strong academic foundation, solid work ex, demonstrable (important) community contribution and an aspiration to do more with life (your MBA attempt). A great application can be stitched together by strategically selecting and highlighting various stories from this raw material.

2. Except few financial obligation (Probably loan for this venture) and exposure to international work culture, I do not have any reason to stay in the foreign country (at least as of now!!!) and will prefer to work in India, so what all will be my options to work in India with the mentioned area of interest?

Two primary options: First, strategy consulting work with a top tier firm such as McKinsey, Bain, Booz or BCG. Two, Corporate job in strategic planning function in a company or a conglomerate, preferably connected to your industry expertise.

3. How big is the "financing your MBA" issue for Top 10 schools?

Many top-tier schools have a tie-up with local banks. For instance, my partner at MBA Decoder took a loan from HSBC London. Every LBS admit is eligible for a loan from HSBC London as part of the arrangement between the bank and the school. Indian banks also lend to students going to study abroad. And, the interest is tax deductible. Check :: Credila's Education Loan India Web Site ::
4. Any other suggestion about any other option I can look for.

Focus on the schools that you REALLY want to study at. Financing will follow. Target 5 schools at least, so that you are hedging your admission, financing and other risks.
