I am applying to strathclyde,Lancaster,Manchester,Birmingham,Aston, Durham,Bath,Leeds,Bradford and Leicester.
After completion of my MBA I want to come back to India.
Please let me know about the prospects i.e CTC and roles in India post MBA.

Shounak , I doubt there are any set figures to determine this. Packagaes would vary between companies, between industries, between roles and also depend on the economy at the time you graduate.

The best thing you can do now is to see the stats for the kind of companies you want to work at, after MBA (hope you have some idea here):
- see how they recruit,
- which of the schools from your list do they visit,
-what kind of packages do they offer, do you have to start at entry level position, despite 6 years work experience or do you make a jump in roles or get a lateral position
-do they offer intenational placements and what are their typical salary figures like?

The kind of role that you get is entirely dependent on you- what do you want to do after MBA - change industry, change function, become an entrepreneur? - the possibilities are endless.

hello,
I need help in applying for colleges.

I have 4.5 years of Software experience and currently working as associate with cognizant. My GMAT score is 610(Q48, V26).

My educational qualification is:
B-tech(Mechanical engineering): 67%,
HSE - 90%,
10th - 79%.

Can you kindly suggest me universities where i can apply for MBA. I am planning to take up jobs in Software field after my MBA as a consultant.

Hi,

I'm looking for some guidance as to which schools to apply for my MBA.

I am keen on in singapore and canada as countries to pursue my MBA.

I have worked 1 year in Portugal, as a web developer in a University,
and 2 years in India at a mid sized software company.

I am obviously partial to a 1 year MBA degree, (Genreal MBA, IT, or Finance) (very different choices, I know)

The colleges I am looking to apply are
1) Schulich (Canada)
2) Queens (Canada)
3) Nanyang (Singapore)
4) NUS (Singapore).

Please do let me know of my chances at these universities.

Would highly appreciate it if anyone could also suggest some good schools for a backup.

Thanks! That helps. Would be great if you can throw some light on this:"The second bit I would like to know is whether any particular type of consulting is preferred to another (such as Finance over SCM, etc). If yes, why this bias? Is it related to perks?"

Not really. This should be a function of your interest and capabilities as a consultant. Companies face issues in operations as much as they face issues in putting their finance function in order. Consulting opportunities exist in all functional areas.

I have an admit from Oxford-Said and ISB till now. I am actually in a dilemma whether to join Oxford or ISB. I know that the UK/EU job market is in really bad shape. The cost of Oxford MBA is 1.5 times that of ISB.

Any thoughts puys?

Thanks!

First of all Congratulations!!!

I am not an expert...but If I were you...I would have always chosen Oxford.....job market in EU might be down now..but hey there are many other destinations which value your Oxford degree(in the long run if not immediately) more than the one from ISB.....

again its just my opinion....experts please correct me if I am wrong...

Hi,

I need help in understanding my chances at US B-Schools. Below are details of my profile:

GMAT: 710 (Q50, V34) AWA-6.0
Acads: Decent (First class in BE Electronics from Pune Univ)
Extra Curriculars: Excellent in college and afterwards (except last 1.5 yrs)
Work Experience: 9 yrs 6 months (10 yrs by matriculation in 2012) in Aerospace embedded software industry. Worked in US for one year. Since last one year or so, trying to set up a global practice in a large MNC, building strategy, presales and supporting business development.
Post MBA goal: Consulting (Strategy focus, across industries)

What can be my stretched, in-reach, and safety schools?
Am I too experienced? Am I too late in applying this year? Should I wait and apply next year or would I be reducing my chances in doing so as my experience would be even more by then?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Kushagra,

Congratulations! Going by the ever increaseing threads on ISB on PG itself, you are definately in an enviable position. And an SBS admit to top that!!!

I would say that rankings apart, you can base your decision on a couple of factors:
1. Academics - compare the course content of both b-schools. Frame a list of electives that you would like to study - ofcourse this is bound to change while you are at school, but if you really care about a few courses and they are better at a particular institution, then you can base a part of your decision on this factor. Its hard to make specific comments here, as I am not aware of your career goals or areas of interest for courses/concentrations.

2. Clubs - compare the career related clubs in particular. These would give you great opportunities to network/ gain a particular industry knowldege/ and with job related search

3. Other aspects of the programs like the business-projects, exchange programs (if you are interested) and career trak kind of opportunities.

4. Location - post MBA career options avaliable- check the employment data of both b-schools. Also, what are your further plans? do you want to stay in India after MBA or work abroad for a few years. If its India for you, ISB makes more sense.

5. Diversity - Oxford wins here hands down- UK is amazingly diverse, you will not get that kind of international exposure at ISB.

6. Finally, the brand name - this will stay with you for life, so if you strongly think about one particular b-school's name attached to your name, then go with it!

7. Financials - I would give less priority compared to the top six reasons - I assume you will take a loan for both b-schools...it's a matter of working harder to pay off one loan over the other (& if you get a GBP salary (no pound sign on my laptop??? ) after Oxford, then all the more better.

Think of all these aspects keeping the career goals in mind!

Hope this helps.

Hi Namita

Thank you very much for the detailed analysis and comments. I returned from the UK last year after completing my post graduation in Economics from LSE. An year back, the London job market had hit rock bottom. No firm was hiring and just getting an internship was really really difficult. I agree that the as far as brand name and diversity is concerned Oxford SBS trumps ISB. I even got a chance to visit SBS last year and liked the "college town" atmosphere of Oxford (as compared to LSE which is located bang in the middle of London).

I would like to get some international work experience before moving back to India. I am still in the process of getting as much information regarding clubs/ events/ treks/ career statistics as possible. ISB does have international placements (according to the placement data available). I am in touch with a few ISB alums and even a current student. I do realize that with an intake of 770 this year at ISB, getting the "best fit" job will be a challenge at ISB.

Thank you once again for your time and comments!

Cheers!

Hi Kunalg,

What type of MBA would suit me the best - difficult question to answer. An MBA program is based on a person's needs - typically what are your career goals and how will the knowledge, tools and frameworks you learn through an MBA, help you reach closer to your goals.

Though in India the trend is to do an MBA immediately after graduation, in international programs, you are generally expected to work for 2-3 years and then enroll for the program. In my opinion, this is also the correct path to take - because once you have some industry experience, you are able to better relate to class room concepts, and therefore get more value out of your education.

From your profile description, I see that you have not worked for a long enough time. I would suggest you to get back to work, which will teach you equally important lessons about business, specially if you are into production or operations. 1-2 years later, you will also have experienced different stuff at work (at the cost of your employer :sneaky:) and will most probably have the answer to which MBA would suit you best, if you still feel need for one.

Another point to note - international programs would not be too happy to learn that you did not get back to being employed because you were studying for GMAT - multi-tasking is your best tool at business school, so don't be caught lacking it. GMAT scores are valid for 5 years, so if you are already set to take the exam, it's ok.

You are competitive at all of the b-schools you have mentioned above.
I did not understand why you are more bent towards a one year MBA degree, which is generally better for a person with more work experience and who wants to get back to work after enhancing some skills, without much career change in the industry/ function.

In your case, you want to change your career from IT software to something else - an MBA which is more relaxed will give you more time to explore the boundless options available to you and work towards them. Your current selection is alright from this perspective as all these programs are 16-17 months (except for Queens) duration.

B-schools expect you to have a good idea about what you will do post MBA (most of them ask a career goal related question in their essays). Therefore, you should figure this out before you begin to write your applications. Clarity on the career path will also give you clarity on what electives/ concentrations you should take during the MBA - with IT/ Finance/ General management focus.

Also, its advisable to have some transferable knowledge /skills that you bring from your current job to the next one- I write this because, say if you want to major in finance, adcoms will expect to see some instances of a link between what you are doing now and finance (for example you could be building financial solutions in your software development job and working closely with the finance function).

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your advice, it has given me a bit more confidence in applying to these colleges. I really feel a lot better knowing I have a fighting chance. :D.

Also I had submitted my candidate profile to HEC , Paris (for kicks) and I was surprised to hear that they might consider me to be a good candidate for their program. I will anyways apply there, but just to ask, If you have any idea of what realistic chance I would have there ( This could be one of the stretched schools, I could apply for.)

Also Could you please tell me a few backup schools, where I could apply to, (just in case types) choice of country is not a major factor, however the college's MBA program would be. (Also know that my choice of the above schools is through my own personal research, and not based on the country. Bit of an aversion to US schools as I have quite a few friends having problems getting a job.)

Thanks a lot

Student4life,
different b-schools have different take on the age factor - many of them are skewed towards younger applicants, while many others will accept older ones as well. There is certain convincing you would need to do- why do you need the MBA at this time in your career? They would also expect to see clear cut career goals that demonstrate that an MBA is a must to get you to point B. The consulting industry generally tends to employ younger MBA graduates therefore you should realistically evaluate your career goals by talking to people in the industry and find out what your employability would be like post MBA and at what level.

If you are thinking of a regular MBA within the next two years, you should apply this year. If you have great things going for you at work then another option would be to set up this practice, enhance your leadership skills and apply 1-2 years later to programs like the Sloan or the Nanyang Fellowship, which are for people with average 15 years of experience.
Some US based programs that look kindly towards older applicants are Duke Fuqua, Yale SoM, MIT, Haas
Among the UK/ Europe based programs: Oxford Said Business School, Cambridge Judge Business School, INSEAD, IMD, HEC Paris & IE.
