Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi,

I have got an admit in ISB and IIMC-PGPEX for 2012 session. I am little confused with which one I should opt for.

I have 7+ years of experience in IT with almost 4 years of overseas (USA) experience and mostly worked for leading clients in credit-card industry.

Can you please sugest which would be a better option for me and why.

Thanks,
Rittick

Rittick,

Your dad just called up and I shared my perspectives with him over the phone.

I also told him his sons should consider themselves damn lucky to have a dad like that who's supporting them so much. My parents had no clue what I was up to :-)

Hey Sameer,
I think you are mixing up with somebody else. I am based out of Chicago now though my dad is in Kolkata. I don't think he called up. Anyways, can you please share your views which one I should opt for.
I have 7+ years of IT experience with almost 4 years in US. People are saying as per brand value ISB is much better; on the other hand I am hearing with 7+ years of exp I should opt for PGPEX from IIMC.
I am not very sure how PGPEX is valued in the industry? I want to be in consulting; I have no idea if a god number of consulting companies come in IMC to recruit PGPEX students.
On the other hand, ISB batch strength from this year would be 770 which is huge; considering the potential downfall at market would not the risk factor for placement would be little higher for ISB as the volume of the batch is much higher than IIMC. Please share your views. Its going crazy now.

Thanks,
Rittick

Rittick bhai,

The gentleman who called up was based in India and mentioned that his son was abroad. Also many other facts overlapped - dilemma between IIMC vs ISB, class size issue. He also mentioned about the PG post. Eerie!

Are you sure your phone/internet connection isn't being tapped?

Anyway, not a good idea to show any bschools in bad light in a public forum. So I wouldn't be able to re-post the info that I shared on the phone as it might be misinterpreted by others. But happy to share my thoughts over email (As you aren't a potential client for us, I don't see any conflict in taking the discussion offline)

Hi puys,

Pardon my ignorance, but I have a very basic question about Consulting. Is Management Consulting just an umbrella under which other types of Consulting (such as Operations, Corporate Finance, Strategy, etc) sit ? Or is MC something different (an entity in itself)? I mean, if someone gets hired as a MC, does it mean he would get a role in any of the different Consulting functions I mentioned?

The second bit I would like to know is whether any particular type of consulting is preferred to another (such as Finance over SCM, etc). If yes, why this bias? Is it related to perks?

thanks!

rkn, typically most b-schools would expect that you have atleast two years of work experience before you do your MBA, though this is not a requirement. Some good programs in Singapore are INSEAD, NUS MBA and Nanayang. Canada has Queens, Richard Ivey and Rotman among the well known courses. You can check out the GMAT ranges and work experience of current students on the class profile pages. It will be a good way to get started and get a feel of the programs.

want to know whether specialised MBA's like in energy (from SPM, gandhinagar; NPTI faridabad etc) or in environmental( from NITIE) will help me to get a better career(including better package) or doing core MBA and then joining some oil company will do. Also I am very comfortable in both the streams. As I have heard that these specialised MBA programs in India dont possess much reputation and job opportunities after doing them are rare. right now I am working at a very low package(

A specialized MBA makes sense if you are completely convinced about continuing your career in that chosen area. As your masters degree is specifically focussed in that area, your prospective employers will always look at you as an expert in that specific area.

But we know that life throws many surprises at us and also many opportunities. It is very likely that after 10 years the energy sector may look completely different from the way it does right now. It may be all about solar, wind and other renewable sources taking dominance. In that case, you will be better place to switch careers leveraging on your transferable skills and then your general MBA will come in handy whereas your specilazed MBA can actually become a contraint.

So I would vote for an MBA that allows us the flexibility and enables us with a set of core tools and skill sets which are transferable across industries.

Consulting jargon surely takes a while to get familiar with 😃 You will come across various other terms such as strategy consulting, technology consulting, business consulting.

Coming to your question, management consulting is often used as a synonym for business consulting. It involves making a set of recommendations to solve business issues of clients such as - shrinking market share, long cycle time for bringing new products to market, falling customer satisfaction levels. Business consulting is different from technology consulting where the nature of issues you are solving for the client, are technological in nature, such as multiple applications for the same purpose, can not scale IT infrastructure or applications to meet business growth, integration between applications and systems, and consistency of data.

As you may have guessed by now, management consulting will cover issues from all functional areas such as sales, marketing, supply chain, customer service and operations.

You will be a better feel for this when you look at the websites of the consulting firms such as McKinsey, BCG, Bain & Co and Accenture.

Hope this helps.

Hi Puys,

My name is Rajiv

planning for gmat so just wanted to know my chances with my profile (work exp., academics)

current exp. : 5 yrs as sap consultant
education: bca(65%) and mca (80%) from s.m.u(distance education), hsc - 49%, ssc - 70%, sap certified

please suggest - if i am able to score 700+ in gmat what are my chances for INSEAD (France) and in india - XLRI, ISB

also, being in erp consulting what are other options i can explore for career growth focusing on management not technical

Thanks

Thanks! That helps. Would be great if you can throw some light on this:"The second bit I would like to know is whether any particular type of consulting is preferred to another (such as Finance over SCM, etc). If yes, why this bias? Is it related to perks?"

Dear Namita/Sameer/Arun

Firstly, allow me to express my gratitude to Namita for her encouraging response to my post here about a month ago when I was in two minds about applying to ISB due to my low GMAT score ( 680). I finally went ahead and applied and now hoping for the best 😃

Having applied to ISB, I have 2 other universities on my wish list as of now where I would like to apply - NUS & HEC Paris. I was wondering if you could help evaluate my profile and tell me if I stand a realistic chance in any of these 2 colleges

XII - 77.6%
Graduation - 63.1% mechanical engineering from a top 20 institute

Work Ex - 3.5 years as on date. currently working as an analyst with a top consulting firm. won a couple of awards for client impact, created a team of 5 analysts almost from scratch, promoted twice in 3 years with the highest rating, have served some high priority clients, etc

Extra curricular activities - Member of the college football team -won 2 tournaments (yay!), won a quiz contest in my college fest featuring 46 teams, tutored a kid, part of the community initiative group at my current employer, NSS volunteer at my college ( got an award too) , Head of a non official organization in college

I have a 2 year gap in my education after 12th as I was hell bent on cracking JEE . Fell severly ill at 12th with Dengue and lost a year other wise the gap would have been 1 year only. This worries me and combined with a low GMAT score makes me hesitant to apply to a top school.

Please advice if I should apply this time to NUS and HEC Paris or I should wait another year and apply with a better GMAT score. Is there any other university in the top 50 where I stand a realistic chance?

thank you for your time and patience

Could you evaluate my profile and suggest me colleges where I could apply (& have good chances of making through):

Industry: Manufacturing - Automobiles (OEM).
Experience: 3.6 Years (as of today).
Extra curricular: Chairperson of technical society (College), Marathon runner, Thai Boxer, Badminton champion (at workplace).
Academics: Silver Medalist, College color awarded.

GMAT score: 690 (QA: 50; Verbal: 34; AWA: 5.5)

Sameer,
It was nice to talk with you. I feel I am kinda decided which one I should opt for. Both B-schools have an excellent pedigree and reputation. But considering my experience I think IIMC would be better option for me. I am worried about ISB's current batch size and the new campus.

Thanks,
Rittick

Good for you, Rittick. Both are great schools and you can't go horribly wrong with either.

You've accomplished what a whole lot of puys here would love to achieve. So take some time to celebrate the success and then come back to share your wisdom with others who are struggling with a whole lot of queries.

Time to give back a little to the community :-)

Good luck, bro. Have a great career.

Nickleblade,

Glad that you applied to ISB and that you were happy with your decision to apply.

Work Ex - 3.5 years as on date. currently working as an analyst with a top consulting firm. won a couple of awards for client impact, created a team of 5 analysts almost from scratch, promoted twice in 3 years with the highest rating, have served some high priority clients, etc

Your work exp. seems interesting and I think you would have good leadership stories to talk about - with building a team from scratch and other achievements in work. Additionally the promotions show career progression. I would think that you should apply to both these b-schools this year, rather than postponing it to another year.
You should ensure that you present all these aspects of your profile in a great way through your essays, resume and recommendations ( with whatever influence you have on the recommenders- present them pointers to build their answers on). GMAT is only one aspect of the application and if you come across as a great guy overall, it will not be a threat. HEC's minimum GMAT score range is 600-780, whereas NUS expects you to have 600 and upwards, so you should be good at both these b-schools.

regarding other programs- its hard to pick out programs without more information: depends on which location you would like to study at / for how many months are you ready to be unemployed and are you do you want to do a particular specialization/ electives which are offered as certain b-schools only

have a 2 year gap in my education after 12th as I was hell bent on cracking JEE . Fell severly ill at 12th with Dengue and lost a year other wise the gap would have been 1 year only. This worries me and combined with a low GMAT score makes me hesitant to apply to a top school.

Don't think too much of this - you have built a good career graph since this time, focus on that. B-schools don't expect you to go back beyond your undergrad days, and if you are severly ill, there's nothing that can be done about it.
