i am interested for MBA and am also open to colleges in india and abroad but i do not know where to begin. what i would like is, a bench mark, if someone could evaluate my academic profile and tell me which are the probable schools in india and abroad which i could consider as my safety schools, then i could start my preps with that in mind.
My acad stats:
10th-93%
12th-69.8%

work ex.-1 year(as of july 13) as software developer in Capgemini India pvt.ltd.
p.s. this is my first post in PG so i am not very acquainted with the norms so if there is any mistake or if any more elaboration is needed kindly ask me..i will reply promptly. looking forward to someone helping me out in this.
Are you looking at any specific countries abroad? It is advisable to get more work experience to build a stronger profile but there are many courses open to such work experience levels as well. Have you thought about specializations?
I am a soon to be college graduate and I have a few jobs to choose from after graduation. One is run of the mill IT consulting job at one of the top rated companies. While it seems like a safe bet, I'm worried that it I'm shelving myself into a generic category of MBA applicants. The other job is a core technical job, highly relevant to my course in Engineering. But again, I am concerned that I will miss out on crucial experiences that are necessary for business school applications (leading a team, innovation etc). There is not much scope for growth in this industry in a span of 2-3 years that I plan to work, before applying for an MBA. If any of the consultants could clear up some of my doubts, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

Hi Amresh,
You are right, you should start preparing for b-school applications along with GMAT. So that you have sufficient time for comprehensive preparation Considering your GMAT score as 700, You can target ISB and some of the top 20 US b-schools, but this is only possible with overall profile building it is not only depending alone on GMAT, it is difficult to build profile within short span of time but it is worth to start working on it now.
I'm an Engineer with barely decent scores but for the GMAT. Would you be kind enough to tell me the heartening truth? Stanford, NYU or Yale maybe? I'm too late for USC!

Hi all This is my first post on Pagalguy although i have been kind of a regular follower for quite some time. Having scored a 99.5+ on CAT and still not being called from any older IIM, I have decided to give up on the Indian MBA dream and write GMAT in hope of getting a good B-School abroad. I am open to any location but a little hesitant to invest 70-80 lakhs for a US MBA if it isn't from a top 25 (too optimistic ?) school. I would rather wait 3 years and try for an Executive Program in India. According to my research that leaves me with ISB, NUS and those top 30 schools. Here is my profile : X : 92.4 XII : 89.2 Grad : 68.23%, Information Technology NSIT, Delhi University, 2011 Was the Director of a technical society and have led 20-30 member teams in conducting events. Have a research paper to my name (Does that help in an MBA application ?) Work - Ex : 2 years (as of July 2013) with a leading analytics firm. Got promoted within 18 months. A couple of awards and appreciation mails. Should get some good recommendations from immediate supervisors as well as the leadership. Have conducted technical trainings for campus hires as well as existing employees. Have regular client interaction. Have pitched new solutions to CXO level reps of the clients. I am thinking of appearing for the GMAT this July so that i can apply for the first rounds of my target colleges. Can someone please evaluate my profile and suggest what score would make my profile competitive enough? Also, do I even stand a chance at these colleges this year with a score say in the 720 range? Even ISB? I'd rather work for a couple of years and build my profile than compromise on the college or the course in haste. I am even open to other courses like Masters in Financial Engineering or Engineering Management.
Currently working in TCS as Production Support Executive[L2 support] since Mar'2011.
No major achievement except a few appreciations from client and as well as vendor side.
No outstanding extra-curricular. Except a minor few stints in college. Only good point is probably is being associated with a NGO since 2011, which also I'm finding difficulty in continuing.
Also part of the TCS football team.
Planning to give my GMAT this year to apply in the first round of colleges, for class of 2014.
What are my chances in getting through to a good college with a score around 700??
And when should I give the exam??
Could you please suggest a few colleges where I would have a chance in getting an admission??
I am interested in mgmt consulting/brand mgmt/roles analytically inclined [hate number crunching!]
Geographical boundaries not a concern.
I am a bit new to the GMAT scenario so would require a detailed explanation..
I have 36 months of work ex in the IT sector. 10th- 84% 12th - 80% B.Tech- 62.4%. GMAT- 680. Received best project delivery. Apart from that no major achievement.
Please provide me with a list of colleges that i may apply to with this profile.

GMAT Score is one among many factors that is considered by b-schools while selecting applicants. Other factors include: 1.a good GPA, 2. good professonal history- including some notheworthy achievements at work and career growth 3. extra curricular interests and achievements.
As soon as you are ready for your best performance. Typically US b-school application deadlines start in October, and as most b-schools have a staged admissions process, you should target to apply in their Round 1 (Oct- Nov). Taking the GMAT by July- August will give you time for a retake in case your first time scores are not upto your expectations.

You can aim for colleges in Canada, which are relatively easier to get into. The visa laws are also more conducive to Indians. Most b-schools will help get you a consulting job as MBAs are general management programs. However you would need to be more sure of your future career goals - you would be required to explain how you foresee yourself making a transition to consulting from your current support role.

Need more details. Why do you want to do an MBA? where do you want to do it from? What are your key achievements at work?

Fair enough. Ideally, if you choose a prestigious school you will find yourself in some of the best destinations that business students can go to. But you should definitely start thinking about what specializations you are thinking about.

Hi,
You have average profile with good GMAT and academics, you are in the right stage of your career and most of the b-schools look for 3-7 years of work experience. I need few more details about which region you are targeting (India, US, UK, Europe, Austarlia and Asia pacific), your career aspirations, post MBA career goals etc., to evaluate your chances for top b-schools.

Hi Neil,
You have an avg. profile/CGPA, a decent GMAT and low work experience. With the kind of profile, Stanford, NYU-Stern and Yale would be ambitious to apply for. I would suggest to target some realistic b-schools like: Cornell, Ross, Duke, Emory, McDonough, Ontario- Ivey, Toronto-Rotman, York, McGill, Queens etc. The list comprises of many but these are few good schools in US and Canada you can aim for.
Let me know in case of other queries you might have.
@mba-help@neha4659 - Hey, my profile: Xth-78.80%(Maharashtra State board),
XIIth-75.17% (Maharashtra State board) , B.E(ECE)-70.07%(Nagpur University). I was in the organizing committee of ISTE students convention Mah-Goa region and Head Event coordinator of two college forums. Will join Infosys in Sept-2013 but have invested one year in CAT preparations(2012 pass-out). Had 88+ percentile in CAT,XAT and 99+ in CMAT. I didn't wanted to join any college other than the top-20 and hence dropped the idea of joining this year. Due to some responsibilities, now I cannot do the 2 year MBA. I have zeroed in for ISB and m planning to join after 3-5 years, please suggest me ways in which I can improve my profile(I know that it's bad) and what I need to do in my near future to have a chance for ISB? I am preparing for GMAT and will give it in 2014/15 with complete preparation. Please help(and sorry for asking such naive questions ). π

I would like to know to what all colleges can i apply? I am thinking of applying to ISB, NUS, and HKUST. Please tell me what are my chances of getting through these 3 colleges. How would you rate my profile?
I am currently involved in my family business operations and plan to join it back after mba , though would like to keep options open for job opportunities after mba.
Have been involved in business operations for past 18months.
I have a 2 month old gmat score of 660(q44,v38) . Though i feel i can improve it upto 700levels as this score was a result of 2week crash study.
Did my undergrad from delhi university Bcom(hons) and scored aggregate 70%.
XII-80%
Now please advice what options are available if i plan to do mba in this year itself( I know its quite late and all deadlines are around corner or might have passed) I am open to all geographies . Also advice if i wait over for 2014 intake how much would my options improve seeing i have less work ex. But would like to join a mba programee this year itself.

Get on to studying friend, and improve those score. You would limit yourself in the choice of b-schools with a lower GMAT score, as the GMAT is akey factor in selection of b-schools.

You can consider doing a Masters in Management programme if you are in a hurry to get back to school. For a regular MBA, your work experience is a little on the lower side at this point. In any case, the current application cycle is now at its end, so technically, you can apply only in the Fall of 2013 for the Fall 2014 intake. In effect it would be 2 years when you apply, and 3 years by the time you matriculate.
A lot of MBA programs have focus on family business- so you may want to specialize there.
MiM programs are 1- 2 year programmes, both pre-work and post-work experience courses (mainly in Europe and UK) which are for early career applicants, having upto 2 years of experience. FT rankings has a comprhensive list - check that out:
I am looking forward to earn an MBA in marketing, sales, IT or general management, as these are the specializations that I believe will be a fit with my up to date career progression. But i am not very sure which colleges shall I apply to.
Xth - 69%
XIIth - 72%
GMAT - 690
Work exp - 6.5 yrs. Have worked in both technical as well as business generation side of the industry. Currently working as pre sales executive in leading company.
My preference would be Asian colleges though have no qualms with any part of the world.
