I have zeroed in for ISB and m planning to join after 3-5 years, please suggest me ways in which I can improve my profile(I know that it's bad)
What makes you say your profile is bad? Your professional profile is most important when you apply for an MBA, and you have not even begun that phase in your life.
So the next two -three years that you are working, put in your best effort there- be proactive and seek opportunities for yourself (rather than waiting for them to happen to you), make a tangible difference in your work- be it for the team or for the client.
You will need to address the one year gap you took for CAT prep in your application, but hopefully in the next 3 years, you would have achieved greater heights and this blip will be insignificant then.
Take up a hobby and interest and build upon it steadily- its always good to have a different aspect to your personality.
I took my gmat last week and scored 680 (QA-48, V- 34)
I have 4.5 yrs of work ex in trading commodities in foreign markets.
I would like to know to what all colleges can i apply? I am thinking of applying to ISB, NUS, and HKUST. Please tell me what are my chances of getting through these 3 colleges. How would you rate my profile?
NUS and HKUST are good choices of b-schools if you want to stay in Financial services. With ISB, recruitments have declined in this industry, with the class of 2012 having just 4% placements in Banking/ Finance (no further breakup given). What are yoru exact career goals after MBA? It will be wise to research you b-schools place students for the roles that interest you.
To increase your chances: Write a great set of applications to these b-schools, highlighting your career growth and achievements. I believe there are not to many team opportunities one would get as a trader - try to address this through some extra curricular involvement. Also, it would be imperitive to discuss why an MBA from that particular country is important for your career path.
i have received calls for pursuing mba from ibs hyderabad, kirloskar institute of management studies harihar, jaipuria lucknow and balaji institute of advanced management studies.
can u please recommend me which institute should i apply for/block my seat.
I am looking forward to earn an MBA in marketing, sales, IT or general management, as these are the specializations that I believe will be a fit with my up to date career progression. But i am not very sure which colleges shall I apply to.
Xth - 69%
XIIth - 72%
GMAT - 690
Work exp - 6.5 yrs. Have worked in both technical as well as business generation side of the industry. Currently working as pre sales executive in leading company.
My preference would be Asian colleges though have no qualms with any part of the world.
Thanks,
Anurag...
Hi Anurag,
With the given information you may also target schools like: Duke, USC-Marshall, Kenan-Flagler, Indiana-Kelley and Wisconsin-Madison in US as well as ISB, Nanyang, NUS and CIEBS-Shanghai in APAC region. Would also suggest you to start the application process much ahead of time so that you have enough time for comprehensive preparations.
Let me hear in case of other queries you might have. You may PM your details to have discussion on profile evaluation and selection of b-schools.

Hi Ankit,
You have a decent acads, undergrad scores and an avg. profile. NUS and HKUST should be within your reach but ISB would be competitive school for you. Although you can make through it by submitting strong application essays and writing about your achievements at work place, headship qualities and professionalism.
Feel free to post any other queries you might have.

Hi Gaurav,
congratulations on your admits! You should be doing this last mile search to make sure that you land up at the place that best fits in with your learning needs. Go to these institutes (travel included), talk to students there and figure out what are the best career prospects that each b-school will offer to you. You could also tap some alumni in your own city and ask them how the b-school has worked out for them a few years down the line.
i would like to ask you all about the difference between MiM and MBA. i do understand the basic difference that MiM is aimed at people with less work-ex. but i want to know the detailed difference in the courses, opportunities, perceptions, avg salary...the necessity to do another MBA after few years of doing MiM etc? please could you guide me thoroughly?
Not sure if this is the right thread to post this query of mine.
I am planning to apply for MBA in UCin. Below is my profile

Could you please let me know the chances of me getting an admit into Ucin. and also what other options do I have with respect to universities.
Thanks
Hi Adhitya,
I believe it should be within your reach. Although the avg. GMAT of Uni of Cinn. is 600+ hence I would suggest you to make your application strong by submitting good essays and demonstrate achievements and professionalism in it.
Let me know in case of other concerns you might have.
I am seeking admission in iilm gurgaon(since now it is aicte approved).. is it fine because i am still confused.. also i am considering ims noida.. plz let me knw pros n cons of both~!!
I am seeking admission in Australia AGSM preferably since my preliminary research suggested that it was easier to get residency in Australia, than it is in UK and US.

Ishan, Thanks for posting. But your query needs to have some more details. There are pre experience and post experience MSc. Finance courses available- what are you looking at?
Please write back with some more information about yourself, specifically about your work experience, and the reason for wanting to do an MSc. Fin.

Thank u 4 ur reply mam
I dont hav any work ex and the main reason for me choosing msc in finance is dt i alwys knew that i'll take finance in 2nd yr of mba but i did not get admited this yr to any college so I came across this course and found it interesting and according to my needs.
I have 2 admits right now and am having a very tough time deciding between them. XLRI and Schulich(Toronto) Full Time 2 year program.
My profile:
GMAT: 770 😁
Work ex: 29 months Indian IT in Infosys Pune
Grad: 63% Computer engineering Mumbai University
Extra curr: Good
There is obviously a big difference in fees between the two. For XL it is 14L and for Schulich it is 38L without living expenses. I would ideally like to go into Finance/Investments/Fund management. So which will be more suitable for me?
I had taken the GMAT a couple of days back & got a 660(Q-47, V-34). This was my second attempt.
Below is my profile:
Work-ex : 6 years. (would complete 7 years by June 2014)
International work ex : 1 year (United Kingdom)
Currently working as Team Lead in a Leading IT company, managing a team of 8 resources.
Can any one of you please suggest what are my chances in good b-schools in India & abroad?
Do i stand a chance to get admission in the lesser known(new) IIM's or other good b-schools in India?
Priyesh, You work experience of 7 years is substantial for you to showcase your leadership capabilities- a trait that all b-schools look for in their applicants. And you are leading a team, my assumption is that you have interesting leadership and team situations to talk about, the kinds that will make an impact on the admissions teams.
However, the GMAT score is a big blotch. You are going to be competing with candidates who have 700+ GMAT scores, which puts you at an obvious disdvantage at the outset. Was the GMAT low in the second try because of factors that can be corrected? If so, I would urge you to retake it. A good GMAT will help you to apply to a larger range of b-schools that accept the GMAT score, which are also the higher ranking ones.
I have already done MBA from FMS, Delhi in Marketing and have been placed in Vodafone India in S&M; profile. However I am thinking of doing another MBA (1 yr preferably) from ivy b-schools abroad. So just wanted a suggestion whether it's worth or not to further boost my career with fatter pay package. If yes, then whether I should try to first gain some work x of 4-5 yrs or should I take GMAT straight away?

Thanks for writing in with this query - its an important one!
Many professionals do a second MBA. As a matter of fact MBA Decoder's co-founder, Sachin did a second MBA from LBS (Sloan Fellow) 10 years after the first one.
You don't have to wait that long, but 4-5 years would be a good enough gap. My reasons for saying this are as follows:
1. You have just completed one MBA. It will be difficult to justify a second one on the heels of the first, in your application.
2. You can make use of knowledge and tools you have acquired at FMS at your present job, and retool yourself a few years later. If you want to change your career at that point, the second MBA will help you do that.
3. On-the-job experience will make the 2nd MBA more valuable. I guess the FMS MBA would have involved more theoretical learning if you were just out of college.
4. You would have earned some money (and hopefully saved it as well) in 4-5 years to finance the 2nd MBA.
As the GMAT is valid for 5 years, and your next MBA plans are not all that set right now, it may not make sense to take it now, lest it expires by the time you actually start applying.
