How to bring it from US. - 02-05-2005, 11:43 PM

Hello,

I've got a cousin coming to my place. I had ordered a Dell 6000 . Now the problem is ....

How does he bring it into India . He says it wud be entered into his passport if he says that the laptop belongs to him and has to show it while taking it back. Or else he has to pay the duty.

How do we deal with this ?? If we have to pay the duty ... How much will it be ?? Any chances of reducing it ??

Regards
VIkram

ure cousin can easily get the lappy as a personal item and he doesnt need to carry it back. things can be gifted/stolen/forgotten.
i can vouch for this coz i am writing this post on my new INSPIRON 6000(its an absolute beauty) . my uncle just got it from the us w/o any trouble. it was unpacked, charged and a user profile was created.
feel free to clear any more doubts.

Hey I heard that they make an entry into your passport that you're carrying a so and so laptop with so and so tag-id. Seems that they'll check for the laptop while going back .

Is this true ?? How do we deal with this ?? And if my cousin says that the laptop is his personal item and he says that it got stolen ?? Will they be convinced ?? How will they deal with it then ??

And what if he says that it is for his cousin. How much will he have to pay ?? I mean even though the laptop costs about 1200$ can he say that it costs around 400$ ?? coz the duty is calculated as a percentage of the price ??

Also if possible do PM me your mobile/contact no. So that I can talk to you ... Or mail me at meetvicky28@yahoo.com

Dont forget to mention the configuration of ur laptop. Whats the warranty you've chosen for ?? How do u get it transferred ??

hi, well if u r only gonna use ms office on ur lappy and u r not gonna use it for any heavy 3d or multimedia progs then u have several affordable choices inside ur budget, am assuming that u'll get the lappy from usa, dell has a couple of good one's if u want an ultra portable notebook the inspiron 700m is retailing at around 1000$ after discounts, the 600m with a 14.1" screen is also a good buy, both have pentium-m proccys, 512 mb ram, but the 700m has a 12.1" screen so it is ultralight and portable. check www.dell.com for more info.

the toshiba satellite m35x is another good lappy which has a sub 1100$ price, review and prices can be found here http://www.notebookreview.com/price/...ay=priceDetail

and then if u want a stylish laptop look no further than a sony laptop however these laptops come at a premium, the sony b100b is pretty decent and affordable @ 1000$ though the stock model comes with a celeron proccy and only 256 mb ram , ofcourse u can customize it to a diff proccy and more ram. most of the other sony laptops are over ur budget.

well i dont know too much abt the compaq, hp and ibm notebooks cause when i was looking for a performance notebook they did not have a very good deal, however since u are looking for a basic entry level notebook its worth checking compaq and hp, i think almost all of their models start at a price point below 1100$.

i'd suggest that u stay away from sony (because of ur budget) but do take a hard look at the dell 700m and the toshiba m35x both are gr8 lappys imo. just make sure that the notebook u purchase has 512mb ram, and also make sure it has centrino technology.

for more info on lappys check out these 2 fantastic sites: esp the 1st one
