hello guys,
heres to the initiative by some guys, and a big boo for people not coming forward for a few hours a week.
anyways heres some basic info on the rakum school:
the school is located in indiranagar. it has both blind and orphan students in almost 50-50 ratio. total unfortunate souls = approx 210.
currently they need both monetary and non-monetary help, coz they living a hand-to-mouth existence. apart from daily requirements like say 2 litres of milk for kids, or a litre of oil, etc, they also need us to do work. some of the important main items required are:
1. Big Black Board - Rs 4000
2. School desk and benches - 100 Nos - Rs 1000 X 100
3. Cots (3 tier bunker) - 6 nos - Rs 5000 X 6
4. 12 single mattresses with rexin covers - 12 nos - Rs 300 X 12
5. Dining Hall Mats (50 ft) - 4 Nos - Rs 500 X 4
6. Solar Lights for the girls hostel - 20 nos. - Rs. 1,00,000
7. Toilets(Bathrooms) - 10 nos - Rs 15000
For their centre in Devanahalli-
8. Kitchen - Rs 25000
9. School shed - Rs 25000
out of this i think we can buy a blackboard, dining mats and a few mattresses (btw, shradha mail on how many matresses can be arranged).
our budget could be = 4000 (blackboard+ 2000 (mats)+ 1200(matresses)= 7200. worth considering. rahul, comment on cash scenario.
but my main concern is non-monetary activities. when i met PG, he recommended keep things easy and simple. so there are two activities, that are really simple and don't require much effort from u guys. just a few hours on a sunday wil do.
the first activity: reading service.
exams are coming up in june. so the blind need someone to come and read out lessons to them. real simple. coz its all school portion, and dosen't require us to go back and study the portions again.
second activity: computer classes.
we can conduct some basic classes on computers, say windowws and office. they have separate setions for girls and giuys. so we could simultaneously conduct classes for both. course can be planned out quite easily. procedure can be started in no time.
bothactivities are simple and need us to spend some time on sundays. i think we can all afford to do atleast that much. for all those people who promised on PG meet day, "where art thou??"
cmon guys, let us come forward for a few hours a week to help someone elses future. let us stop being myopic abut our lives. i'd really like to see all 30 guys on the bangy list to be active. let us show the world, that we can thru small efforts make big changes.
hope to see all u guys on sun. don't sissy at the last moment.
cya all later,

heres the post from harini on rakum.
"At Rakum Blind school theya re also in need of volunteers. Their timings for volunteers is as follows:
Weekends-
11 am to 12:30 pm
2pm to 3:30 pm
Voluteers can help out in any way they feel would benefit the children. They can also come and spend time with the children then.
Weekdays-
5am to 8:30 pm
Here they would prefer reading service. They have a lot of blind children who are appearing for exams and reading out to them helps.
Those who think they can spare a couple of hours every week for atleast a month can teach some subject too.
They also need help in Computer data entry and their website upgradation.
Coming to fund raising.........any old clothes, newspapers, excess food, utensils, anything which we think may be useful for them. Rakum said if they donot have any use for that article as such they'll sell it and use that money for something else.
Well these are their needs........... "
well all those ppl who met today (hasher, priyabrat, falseface, myself, and rahul's friends) decided to go to rakum on next sunday. we will be starting off with reading service, as their exams are close by. later we also planned to start a computer basics course. all others who can make it pls PM me.
cya all later
priam
ps:rahul, note timings of vist and tell the others.

Seeing such a huge map after a long time. Last time when I saw the map was when I was in 8th or 9th when I hated the map... now I loved it.
I and Mansur taught the 10th std girl some History and Geography... for abt an hour and a half I guess.
The girl, unlike others, knows to read and is perfectly alright, but for the very poor understanding of English. Her class consists of 5 mates - all of them do self-study. Scores of people like us sometimes come to teach them.... They try and learn the most difficult sounding chapter in all subjects.
But this was my last free weekend in Bangalore in the near future... dont know when Im going to turn up here...

Firstly, Congrats to all u guys who are making most of whatever u have!!! Mansur, a nice post by u
But, guys, while I was reading the list of requirements, it hit me that all these need not be new things, stuffs like mattresses etc etc... Think in those lines, maybe we can collect them from houses & donate them!! But, yes, that requires a lot of efforts from fellow PGites.....Somehow, if we can collect some odd things around our neighbourhoods during weekdays.once or twice in a week.... & then, conduct these teaching classes in the weekend, that will be TERRIFIC!! Really it's a great relief to see some post here on RAKUM thread! I was really worried!
I wasn't able to make it as i had my exams ( final Engineering exams... ufff what a great CHUTKARA! ) and Indira Nagar i way way way too far from RAJA RAJESHWARI NAGAR.. that's where i'm put up! G O V A R Quote: |
But this was my last free weekend in Bangalore in the near future... dont know when Im going to turn up here...
| I'm getting Nostalgic.... really miss u guys a lot!!!! I hope we can have somekind of meet... off BCS... just for a cup of coffee... what say???

| Yes we were thinking of those lines too… long before we had this plan for going to our neighborhoods for COMICS collection… but then... the real concern was the availability of junta’s. I think that would not be a problem anymore now. As I’m finally done wit my engg. I’ll drag my frnds in ICFAI.. who are very much interested to do something for the CS and especially BCS!!! If they get going the good news will be that BC would be very active.. at least for a min. of 2 yrs!
So this weekend we’ll plan for the biggest ever BCS meet … are u ready juntas????
Welcome to the forum super6… before u are all set to join RAKUM…. U need to PM me regarding ur real name, cont. no & yahoo id .. also et me know what u doing and ur availability … Saturdays or Sundays… etc…
Chal then guys.. really waiting for a HUGE turn up…. Also do follow the old BCS thread for SNEHA NILAYA…..
