Touching Lives - The online way - 08-05-2008, 07:44 PM

Hii All,

Here is an opportunity to donate the idle processing power of our computers for global good.

Have you heard about World Community Grid?

Here is what Wikipedia says about World Community Grid - "Using the idle time of computers around the world, World Community Grid's research projects have analyzed aspects of the human genome, HIV, dengue, muscular dystrophy, and cancer. The organization has so far partnered with over 350 other companies and organizations to assist in the work and has over 300,000 registered user accounts."

I invite you all to visit the website of World Community Grid and be part of this initiative.

The URL is http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org

Thankyou

Hii Puneet,

If there are people joining this endeavor, a Pagal World Community Grid group would be a nice endeavor.

Am already part of a group, and points comes to 16.5 K.

Thankyou

Re: Using the idle processing power of our computers for global good - 11-05-2008, 03:04 PM

Hii Sarvesh,

37k refers to 37,000 points that user has accumulated. 16.5k refers to 16,500 points. It is a number to indicate how much we have contributed to the Grid. If somebody contributes more, he/she will get more points. More details about the endeavor are available in the World Community Grid website. Have a look at the site.

The endeavor is a good one to run on, when we keep our computers running. However, its better not to use this endeavor as an excuse from shutting down our computers when there is no necessity to keep the system running. Saving energy is also important. So the first priority is always to shut down the computers if they are not in use.

However, shutting down the computer is not something that we do when we move out for small breaks etc. And then there are people who do not shut down their systems even if they are taking a long break. The World Community Grid endeavor makes much sense in these instances. Another example of a time/place where this endeavor can be put to use is computer centers in educational institutions. The computers there are not switched off most of the times. Contributing processing power of these computers, which otherwise remain idle, thus helps immensely.

Hope this helps.

Thankyou

It means 37000 points which user accumulates. It increases if we contribute our idle processing system usage to community. It is valuable if we want to use our systems processing at idle time, if we dont have habit of shutting them down

Touching Lives - The online way - 20-05-2008, 02:45 PM

Hello All,

Here are links to two e-mail service providers who offer their service for free. So, whats unique about them considering that most e-mail service providers offer their services for free? Read to know more...

1. Ippimail - This is an e-mail service provider that contributes 55% of its revenues for causes of global good; 45% for UK based charitable organisations and 10% for open source software development. We can select the charities (and there are many of them) to which Ippimail contributes the money to. The link is http://www.ippimail.com

2. Ecologyfund - An email service provider that makes contribution to green causes. The link is http://www.ecologyfund.com/ecology/email_home.html

So if you are looking out for a new email account/ another email account, check out these links. And if you appreciate these endavors, do recommend these service providers to your friends too.

Wish you a nice time.

Thankyou
