Hi,
Yesterday I talked to Ramit regarding this person. His name is Pankaj & I talked to him today regarding the kind of help he needs. He wants somebody to teach him the subjects we go through in our mba ie mostly the academic part of our course. He says he would prefer somebody who has already done an mba or has the understanding of the different subjects like finance, marketing, etc. He is very eager to meet you people, if u guys can come to fms tom or day after he will be available. I will give his contact no. to deepti/amit ASAP & we can coordinate frm there on.

I think you are right in saying that. I realised this because i used to teach my servant. He is in 7th standard & english is included in his cirriculum for the first time. Books are of 7th standard level & he cant understand anything because he has not been taught english ever before.

So i think we should emphasize on the basic level first before going to the level that they are studying right now. Believe me its gonna help a lot.

Help Required. - 21-01-2005, 12:08 AM

g'evening guyz.

i just came back from FMS, DU.; with blessings from Pankaj Somnathe; for the DCS commune. (the person being talked about is visually impared)

now about pankaj.
he completed his 12th in 1994, then completed a diploma for 2yrs in education. then he took up a job as a teacher for 5-7th std students, since he comes from a family of teachers, he stayed with the profession as well.
now, during his teaching tenure, that he first realised that he is having diffculty in seeing things clearly. he wore spectacles of the power -5.5 till then, but then finally opted for lazer therapy to no avail.pankaj has completed his BBM from bangalore, carried out a garment business and learnt to use the computer (using an interactive windows software called JAWS) even with his disability.
he is suffereing from a heridatory disease called 'retinis pigmentosa' and his condition is detiriorating.

now, pankaj can just see a blur of faint light, can barely read text thats about 2" tall, can use his computer to listen to some text he has on it, and now he has his 2nd semester MBA exams from 15th march 2005.

his requirement:
1.requires someone who can make his understand the course material. 'cos his professors are not co-operating. he uses a tape-recoreder to listen to his lectures. but he needs someone who can read him the books.
a) the volunteer should have some knowledge of that subject.
b) would need to spend about 2-3hrs on atleast saturdays & sundays.
c) the reading process generally followed is:
first read, that means reading out the text, so pankaj gets the picture.
second read, in which he would tell you to underline important text.
third, you dictate him the important text, so he can store it on the computer/cassete.

2.the scribe, as per DU rules (the person that writes the exams for a visually impared student)
a) must be from one level of education lower than the visually impared student. thus, in this case we require an under-grad, or someone in his grad school.
b)the scribe needs some familiarising as well. this would range from 1-2hrs for a theory subject to a max. of 4-5days(1hr daily) in subjects like economics that require illustrations.

3.the problematic subjects this semester are:
a) management accounting
b) financial mgmt
c) operations mgmt
d) mgmt sciences.

now
a. i propose that more than one volunteer go for the reading session (speaking for even 1hr continously can make you quite hoarse)
b. engg. guys, plz PM me, we can at least start with operations/mgmt sciences<this saturday>. (how i wish i had paid more attention to my workshop practices & industrial management subjects. )

pankaj was in very low spirits, though he didnot let it show; his eyes could tell it all..he even mentioned quitting the MBA program.
i hope DCS comes up with some solutions, real quick..
anyone, who feels can lend a hand; please PM me.
its a very difficult task in hand. and an enormous one too...

i request the members to please post some suggestions on the DCS thread, on as to how to go about the whole scenario.

regards,
r.

very very well done rdxace!!!
Well, i am doing Part time MBA course in IIT delhi and have some of the sujects you mentioned in my current semester(in fact most of them ). So probably i can take some of the teaching sessions for him. Frankly speaking it will work out good both ways. i dont study for my exams so this would a good motivation for me to study and guys please dont say that i will be doing any community service for teaching (as it would help me also )
Keep me posted about the events. We can also discuss about it on Sunday when we meet in Udhyan Care.

Cheers,
Nitin

Sunday meet. - 22-01-2005, 09:29 PM

Hello people.

This post is about the sunday DCS meet.

Sunday afternoon, nitin, kanu, sumit pawar and myself, will be going to FMS to meet Pankaj and then work-out ways to help him.
If time permits, we shall then proceed to Udyan home in sant nagar; to carry out the teaching as scheduled earlier.

Here's Wishing Sumit and Kanu the very best of luck for their exam tomorrow; and Neha, the very best of luck for The Moot.

Anyone who wants volunteer for any of the two activities being carried out tomorrow(23 Jan) can PM me or any member of the DCS.

Thanks and regards,
r.

PS:How pankaj carries out his day-to-day chores, has become a matter of huge inspiration for me. Attached is a clip from my mail-box, which has good wishes for the DCS commune...from pankaj
