For the uninitiated about how all this communication happened... please join the yahoogroup

A new mail came from Ravi

What you are going to read is hard to believe but true.

Apparently from times in memorial, there has been a practice of Child Marriages on the holy day of Shivaratri in many parts of the country, at a
particular time during that day, when the holy bell rings to signify the birth of Lord Shiva. All Shiva Temples ring this bell at a specified time and it is
said that during the whole time the bell rings any man can tie a thread to any girl – under aged or otherwise and they will be pronounced man and wife. There is no need for any official to solemnize the wedding nor is
there a need for the consent of the girl. This practice has been prevalent for quite a while now and surprisingly has not got much attention. It might seem absolutely absurd in Metro’s and Cities but this practice is rampant in rural areas.

MVF has now taken up the issue of Child Marriages after the completion of its efforts to bring about a legislation to abolish Child Labour and at present
there are numerous teams in the field who will be present at temples on Shivaratri (Sunday) to prevent as many Child Marriages as they can.

In a lighter vein, it has also been suggested that most MVF Volunteers are being encouraged to steal the bells from Shiva Temples to completely put an end to this menace.

In this regard, MVF has once again sought the help of the team that assisted them in the past for the UN Mock General Assembly and also for the campaign to abolish Child Labour. In a chance meeting with the
Chief Coordinator of MVF, Mr. Naren spoke about various other upcoming activities that require special help and active participation from people from all walks of life who have the time and willingness to fight for a just cause.

For the last couple of days there have been discussions to organize a meet to gauge the pulse of the junta about an action plan to assist MVF in
whatever way we can and also to set an agenda for HCS start off again.

As there might be no chance for any of us to contribute to the events on Shivaratri, we could have a meet on Sunday to kick start HCS again. Also, there has been a general consensus among the mvf_hyd_vol group to organize a meet this weekened.

To start off, I propose:

Quote:
Edited: Saturday 25th Feb @ 5pm at Café Coffee Day, Amrutha
Mall, Somajiguda.

The interested can come at anytime between 4pm – 6pm and will have an open discussion about the various ways in which we can contribute to MVF.

Re: Hyderabad Community Service - 27-02-2006, 11:37 AM

Hi All,

On saturday about 10 of us met @ Coffeeday for over 2 hrs to discuss wat all projects we can take up.

Unanimously it was decided that we shud look @ other NGOs that offer us more oppurtunities in the city. I list a few proposals that we discussed:

1. Newsletter - Revive the NL project ASAP. We already have some info that we'd collected earlier for Edition 4.
2. Teaching - MVF had adopted a few govt run hostels. They need ppl to take classes in Science, Maths, Comp Sci etc over the weekends.
3. Working with Blind Children - we could record tapes etc for blind kids. Shwetha to chk with LV Prasad Eye Hosp and Ravi will follow up with Devnar.
4. Working with Slum Children - Nandi works with slum kids over weekends. Rohan to collect more info on this.
5. Offline Library - Collect books (story books, comics etc) and setup a library at one of MVF's bridge camps (or any other NGO's camp)
6. Child Marriage - a) Create publicity material to be used by MVF
b) Collect data to be used by MVF, say on the acceptability of child marriage in the city.

Current focus
1. Rebuild the HCS group.
2. Start work on the NL.

Next Meet
We plan to meet the next weekend, at 5 PM at Jalgam Vengal Rao park. Anybody who's interested in contributing is invited to attend the meet.

If I've missed out anything, plz feel free to add.

thanks,
Uday

Here is the meeting update... forgot to post it here...

Till the time I was present, there were six people. The gist of the meeting was :

a) We will start the newsletter edition IV. I will re-filter the nletter@gmail account and try to see how many articles can be used. Then we might send a mail to people for getting more articles. Once we have the necessary content ready (for which I would be responsible), Ravi and Shwetha (along with other people who know telugu) would guide/assist/work-together for converting the newsletter to telugu. Then someone (not yet decided) will be responsible for compiling them into a proper PDF format (kinda editing/finishing touches etc etc). Once we have the PDF ready then we will talk to MVF about the newsletter and give them for printing. And we restart the process for next edition.

b) Shwetha talked with the peson (middleman) for the LV Prasad initiative. Now She will go directly to LV Prasad people and talk about the details of how/when/what we will be delivering the audio casettees (as per their needs). In case she thinks that more people needs to go along, probably few of us wil go along with her and finalise the details.

c) Ravi will talk to MVF guys again with the proposal that we currently have five-six dedicated people, so that we can surely restart the volunteer training program. As more and more people join in we can increase the projects, add in more projects, add in working with more NGOs.

d) Rohan will be in touch with Naandi people. He hasnt yet got any response. He will pursue that further.

The issue we were discussing is to get in more people. As per my view unless you start activities people wont come [and since i didnt got any counter-views I assume ppl agree with me :-) ]... so the idea now is to start the activities along with spreading the word. As we get more and more people we can expand our projects.

@vkris81: dont worry... you can surely be helpful in a lot of things. please join the yahoogroup mentioned in one of my previous post. That will provide you with more regular updates.

Exactly the point I want to make, i guess we can contact you people who have some tasks in hand and then carry on with it rather than waiting for another meet...
