NASEOH - The National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped is a 37 year old, an India Institution that works towards employment opportunities for the Differently abled. The organization works towards equal opportunities for the differently abled in mainstream jobs but has sensed that even the educated & computer trained differently abled face a disadvantage as their communication skills are not upto the mark and they lack awareness of current day business practices. Synergy is a corporate training firm and has offered to help NASEOH design a 6-month / 12-month long program for the differently abled that will cover communication skills, personality enhancement and a perspective of corporate India. The purpose is twofold, to bring people with different abilities at a skill level that makes them employable and to create a source of skilled and committed manpower for customer interaction and back office functions. December 3 every year is celebrated as the “International Day of the Disabled” - this title is a bit misleading - we are here to celebrate abilities rather than rue our disabilities. This year, NASEOH & Synergy are hosting an event “Synergyizing Abilities” to explore Employment Opportunities in the Mainstream Corporate Sectors and the requisite Training Needs. The agenda is an exploration of human resource potentials within the differently abled fraternity. We request participation of leading members of Corporate India - to locate opportune jobs, to identify training needs, to design the relevant content and to establish the training school. While the agenda is still being formalized (we are awaiting confirmations from other speakers and panelists); the program schedule is thus: Date: 3rd December 2005, 10am to 1 pm Venue: NASEOH, Chembur, Mumbai. Inauguration- Key Note Address
- Welcome to Guest of Honor
- Guest of Honor’s Address
Employment Opportunities for the Differently Abled.- NGO Perspective
- Corporate Perspective
Panel Discussion (1 moderator & 5 panelists) on Mapping Training Needs with Employment Opportunities Lunch We will greatly benefit from your views and encouragement and request you to grace the occasion as a guest. We look forward to you presence. Sudha Balachandra Preeti Sharma Menon Director General CEO NASEOH Synergy ############## Thats the invite for the event to be held on the 3rd of December. I just spoke to the administration and they wanted us to come over because the talks are very much in sync with what we are looking to achieve. Work for the physically challenged through training. So all the regular mumbai junta..do do do make it. I know its a Saturday and its tough.. but it'd be great if you could | | | | | | | |

My first visit to NASEOH.
Occasion: “International Day of the Disabled” (3rd December) Band of brothers: 1.Allwin aka PG 2.Rohit aka estranged_gnrs 3.Me aka denish Warning: You might find some details missing (probably my inability to concentrate for longer hours). Rohit & Allwin will pass on the rest. Rohit was studiously taking notes. The day started on a not-so-positive note with Allwin & Rohit being disappointed at the absence of breakfast (I had stuffed myself). Round 1: (Guest of Honor) The Guest of Honor was {to use the words of the esteemed panelists} “Differently Abled”. He was Prof. Patil the Head of _____ College. He heads the only Medical Instruments dept. in Asia. He has overcome immense challenges (being dependent on a wheel-chair) to have achieved a position of repute through sheer determination & Hard-work. Round 2: (Some Corporates) This Group included corporate Representatives of WNS (a BPO), a representative of Ion-Exchange (Himself an ‘Achiever’) and a third person _____ (rohit fill-in-the blanks). The rep. from WNS talked about the opportunities in the BPO industry for the these “differently abled” people. The issues discussed included the need for them to be computer-literate as well as good at communication. Of course, over the course of the day’s discussion issues such as lack of interest on our part with respect to our refusal to learn (sign language, for example) and communicate were raised. Round 3: (Panel Discussion) 4 panelists, discussing the various issues. Such as opportunities for them in BPO’s and the Hospitality industry. The skills that these industries look for in the candidates. How these skills can be inculcated, that’s where the NGO’s come in. Some Major Stats: Their population in India approx 22 million (Indian census); 103 million (WHO census). 80 million general belief. 14 lakh in Mumbai. The term used was “Invisible Minority”. Some major issues/questions raised (to ponder): 1.Does the industry fit them out of sympathy, or does it find this profitable ? 2.If profitable, is it due to the concessions from the govt. or due to their ability ?
---------------------(conclusions, some) ·They are not challenged in every sense, they have skills which need to be tapped. ·Their skills need to be appreciated and it must be ensured that they are given work as per their skill, so that they derive satisfaction out of their work and not fell that they are being brought in to satisfy the govt. ·NGO’s like NASEOH have to provide information (do’s and donts) because the co’s are unaware of many thing that can be done for their benefit. P.S. There is no flow in this post…Rohit, Allwin .. help me EDIT this thing.
