case1: When both the prev. flags(f1,f2) were on the same mast. Say f1 was below f2.
Now the third flag can either go
a) below f1
b) between f1 and f2
c) above f2
d) 2nd mast
e) third mast

which totals to 5 ways

case 2: When both the flags (f1,f2) are on different masts
Now the third flag can go
a) below f1
b) above f1
c) below f2
d) above f2
e) the third mast

which totals to 5 ways again

I hope U get the point

Sid
I think answer is 135.

case 1. If only one flag is used: 5c1*3c1 =15
case 2. If only two flags are used: 5c2*3p2 =60
case 3. If three flags is used: 5c3*3p3 =60

Hence answer is 15+60+60+15 = 135

One small question from my side:
How many 3 digit numbers are there which are neither divisible by 2 nor 3

this is just like P(2)+p(3)-p(6)

so p(2) = 500 - 50 (0 to 1000 - 0 to 100)
p(3) = 333 - 33 (0 to 1000 - 0 to 100)
p(6) = 166-15

= 450+300-150
=600

so those are not divisible will be 900 - 600 = 300
