Re: [2008] DI and VA/RC Question a Day by Arun Sharma's Mindworkzz - 07-10-2008, 02:38 PM

1.1 & 2. 5

Total no. of votes in round 1 =163+1=164
Total no. of votes for H and I in round 1 =164-60-24=84
well, according to options only 32 fits, as we hav 25% of 32 as 8 (integer)

so, H gets 48 votes in 1st round.

as 25% of 32 =8 voted for H in the 2nd round...H got 64-48-8=8 votes
from those who voted for J in round 1
Remaining 24-8-1( J's country)=15 voted for I in 2nd round
For 2nd round, G =163-64-39=60
in 3rd round retained voters for H =64.
for I , eligible votes =39-15 ( voted for J & I) - 1( I itself )=23
and voters for H = 64+8 =72 & voters for G =147-72=75
out of 23=8( for H )+15( for G ) ...=> 15/23=65.2%

Victory Margin: 75 - 72 = 3
3. 4
4. 4 (Only1)

Re: [2008] DI and VA/RC Question a Day by Arun Sharma's Mindworkzz - 07-10-2008, 05:06 PM

My Answers :
1. (1)
2. (5)
3. (4)
4. (4)

In second round, J would have been eliminated from the process and hence will not vote.
This means in first round, there were 163 +1 = 164 votes
For second round,
64 = x (votes for H in R1) + .25y (votes for I in R1) + J'
39 = .75y + J''
J' + J'' = 23 (exlcuding J )

Hence, x+y= 163-23 = 80

Now we must have y divisible by 4 and less than 60 and more than 24
Only option is 32.
therefore x = 48
y = 32

Now, in R2 :
G= 60
H= 64
I= 39

this can be explained as
H= 48(from R1) + 8 ( 25% of R1 I voters ) + 8 ( from R1 J voters)
I= 24 (remaining 75% of R1 I voters ) + 15 (from R1 J voters excluding J who cant vote)
G= 60

Now in third round, we have total 147 votes which means 16 from R2 were out of the process ( this must include I )
Also all these 16 would be I voters in R2. So we have only 39 - 16 = 23 R2 I voters who can vote in next round R3

Now half of R1 I voters that is 16 voted for H in R3.
We have already seen 8 of them voting for H in R2.
So in R3 8 from R2 I voters vote for H which means total votes for H = 64 + 8 = 72 in R3

Now out of 23 voters remaining as mentioned above, 8 voted for H that means 15 voted for G
So total votes for G in R3 = 60 + 15 = 75

Hence for
Q1 - (1)
Q2 - It is 8 because we take 23 - 15 ( and not 24 as J is eliminated ) Ans (5)
Q3 - As explained above 15 out of 23 voted for G = 15/23*100 = 65.2 Ans (4)
Q4 - First statement is true (assuming A = G if there is a typo ) as G = 75 and H = 72
Second statement is false because as discussed it is 15
Ans (4)

Re: [2008] DI and VA/RC Question a Day by Arun Sharma's Mindworkzz - 08-10-2008, 02:43 AM

Ok.. this is my first attempt...

In 1st round . G=60 got the maximum votes while J=24 got the minimum votes.
As such G+H+I+J= 60+24 +H +I = 84 +H + I

Now as per the given condition the number of votes for I shoulld be more than >>24 but less than << 60,..

checking the condition 3rd, and the options is 1st question, we get 32 and 38 as the available options.. howevr 25% of 38 will lead to a fraction.

as such 32 is the right answer..

Now total number of votes in 2nd round =163

as such total number of votes in 1st round ==163 +1 =164
==>>G+H+I+J =164
==> H= 164 - ( 60+32+24)= 48

therefore H got 48 votes in first round ...

From the 2nd condition given, G and H will bring their respective votes to the next round.

AS such in 2nd round
G+H+I =163
==>G=163- (64+39)=60

Now out of the 64 votes received by H in round 2, 48 votes have been brought from 1st round
==>> 64-48=16 votes received by H in round 2

According to condition 3

and 25% of Votes of I=25 % of 32 = 8
therefore votes given by I to H =8

==> votes given by J to H =8

For question 2, answer is 8

now for question 3
total number of votes for J in round 1=24

out of which 8 votes were for H and the remaining 16 votes were meant for I ( Condition 4)

for answer 3, we have

39-16=23==> votes meant for I

Now out of 23 voters remaining as mentioned above, 8 voted for H that means 15 voted for G
15/23*100= 65.2

for Question 4

Total number of votes for G= 60 +15=75
total number of votes for H= 48+16+8=72

Difference =75-72 =3

1. What is the number of votes cast for candidate I in round 1?

(1) 32 (2) 88 (3) 38 (4) 96 (5) 92

2. How many countries who voted for candidate J in round 1, voted for candidate H in round 2?

(1) 2 (2) 9 (3) 5 (4) 9 (5) 8

3. Among the members who voted for candidate I in round 2 and were still eligible to vote in round 3, what percent voted for candidate G in round 3?

(1) 68.5% (2) 95.2% (3) 66.68% (4) 65.2% (5) 79.5%

4. Which of the following statements must be true?

1. Candidate G won the election in round 3 by a margin of three votes.
2. 16 candidates who voted for J in round 1, voted for I in round 2.

(1) Only II (2) neither I nor II (3) Both I and II (4) Only I

-----------------------------------------------------
DI-RC-VA a Day Question # 15
-----------------------------------------------------

Read the Questions 1, 2, 3 given below and find a suitable answer from the given options:

1. Are you still reading the impersonal newspaper in town? Did you know that the Speak Up is owned by an out-of-town business group that couldn’t care less about the people of Butter City? Read the Trumpet, the only real voice of the

people of Butter City!
Which of the following most directly calls into question the argument raised in the
advertisement above?
(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Trumpet come from firms
whose headquarters are located outside of Butter City.
(B) The Trumpet usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than
does the Speak Up.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Trumpet reside outside the limits
of Butter City.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the
Speak Up have lived and worked in Butter City for ten years or more.
(E) The Speak Up has been published in Butter City for a longer time than
has the Trumpet.

Questions 2-3 are based on the following.
The planet Allia’s resources are being depleted much too fast. To correct this, the country Hades must keep its resource consumption at present levels for many years to come.
2. The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) Per capita resource consumption in the Hades is at an all-time high.
(B) The Hades wastes resources.
(C) The Hades uses more resources than any other country.
(D) The Hades imports most of the resources it uses.
(E) Curbing Hades resource consumption will significantly retard Allia’s resource
depletion.

3. Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument above?
(A) New resource deposits are constantly being discovered.
(B) The Hades consumes one-third of all resources used in the Allia.
(C) Other countries need economic development more than the Hades
does.
(D) Other countries have agreed to hold their resource consumption at present
levels.
(E) The Hades has been conserving resources for several years.
