My previous solution was in correct
lets do this again
analyse A B C and F they have no match at any position
so one of them has zero correct, other 1 , other 2 and the fouth has to have (7-1-2)= 4 correct
now it is easy to see that C is the one with 4 correct
this further means D and E have one as 3 correct and other as 5 correct
which makes it obvious that E has 5 correct and D has 3 correct
SO order is 7 6 3 1 2 4 5
so solution is
1 d 2 c 3) a 4) b 5) a | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to implex For This Useful Post:

what i have done is...
since at least one bookie will get the bet right..
first i found out the horses which cant take a position
its like :
position Horses not eligible
1 H2,H3,H4
2 H1,H4,H3
3 H1,H4,H5
4 H5, H2, H7
5 H6
6 H1,H3,H4
7 H6, H1, H4,H3
now in the given table H4 is repeated max times at position 6...
so a hint is there that it might be in position 6...
to give variable answers...
then i checked by putting options..
H5 was not satisfying...
and then by 4-5 iterations..
the order 7 6 3 1 2 4 5 satsfied all teh criteria...

&
sequence is H7, H6, H3, H1, H2 , H4 , H5
finally i think
sequence is
Rank 1 H7 or H6
Rank 2 H6 or H2
Rank 3 H3
Rank 4 H1
Rank 5 H2 or H5
Rank 6 H4
Rank 7 H5 or H7
so the answers after modification are
1) Option e
2) Option e
3) Option e
4) Option e
5) Option a | the combination in bold is wrong as coz if thats the sequence , then A and E end up having the same number of correct bets which is not the case

my approach, i tried with the highest possible number of bets , which can be 5 .
Also if we have a look at the mismatch in the bets , D and E can appear to be the ones which can have 5 correct bets , further drilling shows E is the one with 5 bets right , now i seriously did it by trial and error and underwent a lot of pain for the comination as out of 7 ranks 5 ranks can be chosen in 7c5 ways lolzzzzzz
one combination that hit was 7 6 3 1 2 4 5
Answers
1) d
2) c
3) a
4) b
5) a

Maybe your answer is correct.... but i would not agree with your process. There is a much more strucured way to solve this question.... Pls remember, if a question of this difficulty and length does enter into the CAT, it will lead to a riot.
So all we at pagalguy are trying to give you is a learning opportunity, so that whatever you face in the CAT is easier than what you have seen.

The process is always more important than the end product.....perhaps the most imp thing for cat prep....
if you hit on the correct process you will not need to check for answers to any question you solve...
