Aarav can we have another thread wherein we can discuss higher concepts of maths like diophantine eqs, pell's eq, number theories, higher geom. trigo etc?
btw: the math fact for today can be easily proved if we take any no 'x'
(x^7/11)^pi will give a rational

Re: CAT 2008: Quantitative Questions a Day 52 - 26-06-2008, 05:15 PM

Hi,

As only water can evaporate, therefore the weight gets reduced due to water only and the solid weight remains constant.

Let x be the final weight (of dehydrated melon).

Now as 95% is water now, hence weight of solid part is 5%.
Also earlier, 1% was solid => of 10 Kg, 0.1 Kg is of solid weight.

As solid weight remains constant
=> 5% of x = 0.1 Kg
=> x = 2 Kg.
=> Ans. is (3) 2Kg.

re: CAT 2008: Quantitative Questions a Day 51-100 -The discussions-Brought to you by SMOT - 26-06-2008, 05:17 PM

was busy with office formalties so couldn't post yesterday..

Given p and q be positive such that 2 >= p-q, the min value of 2/(p+q) + q/2 is

(1) √2 - 1/2 (2) (√2 + 1)/2 (3) 1 (4) 1/√2 (5) none of these

my take

2 >= p-q
differenciate we dp/dq =1 taking minima case..
differenciate 2/p+q +q/2 ..
we get p+q = (^1/2
p = 2^1/2 +1
q =2^1/2 -1
we get
answer as 1

Nbangalorekar bought a 10 kg of water-melon in Bangalore that had 99% water. After the water-melon was left outdoors for a day, it was 95% water. What was the weight of the dehydrated water-melon?

(1) 9.6 kg (2) 9.5 kg (3) 2 kg (4) can not be determined (5) none of these

reminds me of a old mock question (time i think...)

1/20 x = .1
x =2kg ...

There is already a thread for that opened by Vineet last year, but I'm not sure how helpful this will be for CAT preparation. Even XAT doesn't venture into that advanced topics. As a lover of mathematics, you can discuss these topics on that thread

QQAD 52##

Raw content = 1% of 10 kg = 0.1kg

Now the water melon has put under sun...

raw content now = 5%of the new wt.

Thus 5%of x = 0.1

x=2kg option (3)

Today's problem is also known in Maths world as Potato/Water-melon paradox.

If anyone is well read in his life then any question will remind him/her of similar question from somewhere else. I don't look at mocks to prepare QQAD problems.

Bit late in the answer -

2 Kgs -
Explntn-

Weight of the Material - 1% = .1 kg
So Finally - .1 + .95y = y
or, .05y = .1
or, y = 2
