So does everyone agree with 5/8 as solution????
Then I have a small doubt......
the question says: "If x + y ≥ k.(a+b) for all a and b, then k = "...

I stress on "for all a and b".
So there will be a condition where a=b.
In that case, it becomes a square.
Can we say that k=5/8 even in that condition......?

x=a2/8b + b/2
y= b2/8a + a/2

x+y = (a+b)/2 + (a3+b3)/8ab
= (a+b) [a2 +b2+ 3ab]/8ab

AM >= GM
a2+b2>= 2ab

x+y >= (a+b) [5/8]

k=5/8

Sir, the coordinate solution was given just to make the answer look much simpler. It can't get better than this [at least to our capability].

Re: CAT 2008: Quantitative Questions a Day 1 to 50 - The discussions - 27-05-2008, 08:29 PM

Aarav, although I have understood the right approach I m nt able to make out where I went wrong..
my approach was :

let the centre of the circle passing thru A and B and touching CD be O.
Then OA=OB=OP=x (P is a point on the circle where CD touches it.Then OP || BC)

Extend OP to intersect AB at R.
Let <AOR= C

Now,
C>=0
or, cos C <=1
or, x *cos C<= x
or, x+x*cosC <= 2x
or, b<= 2x ......(1)

Similarly, a<=2y ........(2)

Adding (1) and(2)

( a+b) <=2(x+y)
then,
(x+y)>= 1/2(a+b)
So k=1/2

So my answer= (4)1/2

Please tell me what is wrong in this process or is it completely wrong?
