Thumbs up Re: Please share your thoughts on QQAD - 21-03-2008, 11:38 AM

Well i amy not be the rite person to comment, since i am not good at Quants and always wanted to solve QQAD, year after year i subscribed but didnt solved any.

QQAD +ves
  • Lot of variety of Q's
  • High standard
  • Daily capsule
  • Disussing them on the QQAD threads opens' u r mind
QQAD -ves
  • High standard doesn't help much weak students like me, as we tend to loose in the middle of Q and then leave it.
Some suggestions
  • I t should be more Cat like, i know that is very tuff to do , as it requires lots of effort to make the,m, kudos to aarav , vineet and QQAD team who spent nights for it
  • It should not be so ticky that is very far from CAT and students like me me who fear from Quants dont even open the news letter

Frankly speaking.. i would count QQAD as one of the most important tool on PG. As, we've encountered tougher QA sums which appeared in CAT'07. Relativistically, we can find that working on QQADs is a good effort always.. Maybe level are higher than the CAT, but few question which were in for '07 were relatively tricky stuffs and that could have been a great help. As a matter of fact, i would add that, personally i didn't work on as much as 80% of all 200+ sums, but whatever i solved and read were really good... I didn't really worked that well and merely scored 92%ile in QA..
though, I have saved 'em all for '08 as well...

The only suggestion, i would like to give is that, QQAD should continue and how to take, it totally depends on an individual..

Regards,
Dee

Re: Please share your thoughts on QQAD - 21-03-2008, 12:47 PM

First thx to puys for this wonderful concept of QQAD.I'm not so good at quants. Moreover, there are people who are targetting not IIMs but some good colleges like XLRI,FMS etc.For such people getting tough quants makes them dejected.I have lost my confidence when I fail to solve some of the QQAD(I've failed most of the times). So my 2 cents for QQAD:

Daily capsule may consist of one Q above the CAT standard and one Q of atmost CAT level. This would benefit some weak people in Quants like me who eventhough fail to solve the tough q are atleast happy solving the other one.

Aaravji,
adding to my earlier post, it would be helpful if you can post concept notes before posting the questions.
I know it is not possible to post concepts each day. But maybe, the concepts for the whole week can be posted on a Sunday and the questions for the week may follow the schedule given on Sunday.
I have been a spectator to QQAD and never an avtive member as I am quite new to PG, so if this is now how it is done then no issue

I just feel that before the questions, posting the concept behind the solutions would be helpful and ppl who are weak at quants can have an idea of how to go about the problems.

thanks a lot

Re: Please share your thoughts on QQAD - 21-03-2008, 08:20 PM

I have been a silent observer of QQAD and sporadic participant since the last couple of years. 2 reasons I don't follow QQAD regularly, I feel the questions are above CAT level and I am little lazy, conveniently so, to break my head for an hour every day to solve a seemingly difficult problem.

I can vouch for the fact that a regular QQAD follower will undoubtedly benefit from the same. But, how many aspirants do we keep interested along the journey? I feel there will be many like me who give-up the urge to open their maiilboxes every morning, sit with a pen and scrap of paper to solve a toughie that is delivered, just because I could not solve the question for the past 3 consecutive days.

Even my students ask the same, I am not able to solve QQAD, I am no good in Quant. But the fact is that if we take any previous CAT paper and solve those 25 questions without any preparations and similarly pick up 25 questions randomly from the QQAD archieves, the probability that we may do much better in CAT questions than QQAD questions is high. But then, why so? CAT questions are for the street smarts, who can think their way out through any situation without any help. QQAD questions are more for the hard worker kind of students. One needs to sweat it out to crack these on most occasions.

Do I miss not solving QQAD? No. I can still manage a 97-99 range consistently. Pluses - I don't feel morally low which I would have felt had I tried a QQAD and had been unsuccessful. Minuses, I cannot see a 99+ too often on my scorecard. Maybe, QQAD helps build this rare consistency. But, I would feel happy this way. Also, for a majority of the students who come to me asking about not doing well, I suggest them not to worry about QQAD question, if you have time, go through them, give a thought for a minute, else go through the solution and understand the concept.

I have respect for the team behind QQAD, especially for Aarav. I have interacted with him and can endorse that he is one mathematical brain above par, which is a rare commodity. All I intend to suggest is that QQAD could be more of these 'smart thinking - quick solution' kind of questions and lets say 3 tougies for a weekend.

Thanks for your input people - I read each word with keen interest and will discuss the whole in detail once we have many more such comments.

Answer me Truthfully - if QQAD were meant to be answered in a jiffy and if the standard of quant problems were the same as that in CAT, would you stick to QQAD for 28 long weeks? We will be ridiculed as just another product in the market and the fact we are not charging you anything for this will make you ignore us even more. What differentiation is then QQAD bringing vis-a-vis mock questions or material of coaching institues?
NO, I'm not saying that I agree with carrying QQAD as tough and unsolvable as it has been till now. This perhap needs change and that's what we are exploring in this thread

Sir, we would want to start it ASAP, but have lot of things to manage before that. I will be very frank here - chances of going forward with QQAD 3 is 50% right now, and if it has to start it will be in April end or May 1st week only.

Aarav,

As has been mentioned by many others on this thread, QQAD questions are a bit more difficult than CAT. Lowering the level a wee bit (only a wee bit ) will, in my opinion, only increase its following. And as far as my knowledge goes, there aren't any products in the market which are even remotely of the level of QQAD. I, personally, have been a dormant reader of the QQAD. Honestly, I used to start with the problem and then perhaps lose it mid-way. And the motivation was sometimes a bit on the lower side too. (My mistake, i understand). To draw an analogy; i had also subscribed to the solidgyan's NL for DI. That was one thing i used to solve regularly. It was much closer to CAT level. Although, it was really frustrating to solve the ridiculously easy questions sometimes which used to appear in it. But, i atleast had the satisfaction of solving it. To be honest, for an average aspirant, QQAD scares him/her off. I believe, reducing the difficultly a little will only increase the participation.

Deep

PS: Even if you decide not to reduce the difficulty, I would still love the QQAD to continue in the current avatar .

Aarav,

Whether you reduce the difficulty level or not for QQAD, it'll still continue to be a gem of threads. But, ya decreasing the level will definitely ensure greater participation.
so,plz start it asap...so that we can start utilizing office time
