For such questions when the grid is a square we have
No of rectangles = 1^3+2^3+3^3+.........+n^3 where n = no. of rows = no of columns = 8 in this case

Thus no of rectangles = 1^3+2^3+3^3+.....+8^3 = 1296

Similarly no of squares = 1^2+2^2+3^2+........+n^2
