Each cell in a 2 × 4 grid is to be tiled with tiles of one of the four colours - red, blue, green and yellow, such that no two squares are tiled with the tiles of the same colour in the same row or in the same column. What is the number of ways to do this?

1) 4! × 3!
2) 4! × 4!
3) 23 × 3!
4) 9 × 4!
5) 4 × 4!
is it 4) 9 x 4!????

Hi,

Please suggest the approach for the question below (CAT is so near and m still seeking for approaches )

If both the roots of the quadratic equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 lie in the interval (0,3) then a lies in ?

a) (1,3)
b) (-1,-3)
c) (-sq rt (121)/91,-sqrt()

Two more questions:

Value of the expression (x^2 -x+1)/(x-1) cannot lie between
a) 1,3
b) -1,-3
c) 1,-3
d) -1,2
e) -1,3

Answer is (d).Please tell the method to reach or derive that...

If one of the root of the equation ( I-m)x^2 + Ix + 1 = 0 is double of the other and is real ,find the greatest value of m.

a) 9/8
b) 8/7
c) 8/6
d) 7/5
e) 5/7

Answer is (a).Please advise the aproach...

Thanks in advance

For such questions when the grid is a square we have
No of rectangles = 1^3+2^3+3^3+.........+n^3 where n = no. of rows = no of columns = 8 in this case

Thus no of rectangles = 1^3+2^3+3^3+.....+8^3 = 1296

Similarly no of squares = 1^2+2^2+3^2+........+n^2

Hope it helps

That was really Quick. Thank You. How we should we find the answer if the grid is not a square?
