Not very long ago, the Data Interpretation (DI) section was everybody's trump card to gaining that extra percentile in the Common Admissions Test (CAT). As CAT turns out bags of surprises every year, the DI section has turned from being the most scoring section (1999 to 2003) to suddenly becoming the least scoring in 2004 and worse still, in 2005.

What used to be a set of simple graph-based arithmetic questions, DI in its new-age incarnation is a confusing mixture of charts, tables and logical reasoning and thus a pet peeve for many.

Hitesh Devalia of Endeavor Careers makes sense of new-age DI and provides useful tips to help you tame this section.

Once again a brilliant step by PG

I think that this thread will definitely those who think that DI is their nemesis

I would suggest all the puys finding difficulty in DI to go through the pdf file attached in the first post, as it will help you clear many of your concepts regarding the type of the question which we get in the DI section!!!

Way to go PG!!!

I was waiting for something like this..good sets in.solid gyaan were few and far between and there are repeats from last yrs series...

And I havent untill now come across a genuine DI approach tutorial...hope this helps..

I promise to be a regular here ...

A humble request...Please do ensure that DI sets here are not mere repetitions of previous pattern...

I am able to open as well as download the file

Just right click on the link and then do Save target as, and try saving that file. Even after that also if you are not able to open or download the file pm me your mail id, I will forward it to you

Ok my take on the first set ..

1.How many times did any of the players shoot the moon?
3 times (option 2)

2.In how many rounds were the scores of any players numerically reversed by mistake buy the scorer?
Twice (option 2)

3.Which are the players whose scores were noted incorrectly?
A & B (option 1)

4.What are the actual standings at the end of the game in order of rank?
ACBD (option 1)

Question 1 is very easy as even a cursory glance at the table should give you the answer . However question 2,3,4 cannot be solved in isolation. After 1 min or so of trying to solve with comparing the sums , i decided its faster to just write down the deviations and solve ..

ie.

Round 1 : 0 , 5 , 0 , 21
Round 2 : 0 , 25, 1 , 0
Round 3 : 13, 0 , 1 , 12
and so on ...
This way you can easily identify the ones where mistakes occurred and solve . (A faster way would be to compare two rows and do the calculation in mind , but for me writing is faster and actually saves me time and mental agony of whether i did it right) ...
