How to solve "tournament" based questions in DI - 13-08-2008, 11:03 PM

Hi

Ive taken mocks at TIME and i have noticed that there are these "tournament" based questions which are asked quite often. Like say world cup tournament , football tournament and so on. Basically a few rules are given and then questions like what must have been the minimum score to win , what was the goal difference etc.
I wanted to know how does one go about these questions.Coz i am never able to solve them properly. I just do some hit and trial and end up getting nothing.

If someone could help.
Thanks

exact...
I can do some trial and error calculations considering the options , but in the end I am not so sure abt the ans...and end up wasting time..
Generally I avoid these sets in mocks........but it would be really helpful if someone can explain how to deal with these. as mostly the type of questions remain the same like:what can be the minimum points of the winner?
or max points for the last position?

Question Re: SolidGyan DI - New Set - 18-09-2008, 02:09 AM

A new question for all of you...

All the students in a class of 100 attended a summer camp, organised by SAI and WHO together. At the camp ,each of these students had the option of enrolling for coaching classes in at most three sports, namely football, cricket and hockey.

In an attempt to find out the relative popularity of the three sports ,SAI collected the number of students enrolled for each of these three sports and found that, a students enrolled for hockey, b students enrolled for football and c for cricket.

WHO, on its part, collected the data regarding the number of sports enrolled for by each of the 100 students and found that, d students had enrolled for exactly one sport, e students for exactly two sports, f students for exactly three sports and g students had not enrolled for any of the three sports.

Q1) if d>e>f and c is less than a as well as b , what is the maximum possible value of c ?

1)63 2)64 3)65 4)66 5)None of these.

Q2)If a,b,c,d,e,f and g are all distinct natural numbers, the minimum possible number of students who enrolled for at least one sport is

1)9 2)10 3)11 4)13 5)None of these.

Q3)If a+b+c = 100, the number of the students who enrolled for none of the three sports is at most...

1) 30 2)66 3)68 4)52 5)50

Will post the answer tomorrow.

Dear Puys,

I have already subscribed to the NL more than a week back but still not receiving the same. I have cross-checked and it confirmed that I have already registered. Its a gmail id and I am getting other NL's like QQAD.

Help please.
