thanx avinav i also got the same answer but in the book the ans. was given as 28, so got confused and needed to check.

The book's answer is obviously wrong...... because I checked this using a calculator

thr r 3 vowels a, i and e in 'article'

As 'article' is a 7 letter word, we have only 3 even positions to place a, i and e. So we have to select 3 vovels for 3 positions (3C3 = 1) and arrange them in 3! ways. And the rest four letters can be arranged amomg themselves in 4! ways. Hence we get total arrangements with vowels occupying the even places as (3C3)x3!x4!.
Total possible arrangements without any condition are 7!.

Hence the probability = (3!x4!)/7!

= 1/35

Average in Short Kut
Hi Guys, you people must be knowing by now that problems on average can be done faster using the short kut methods given in Arun sharma's quant book. There's also a similar approach in TG. Well I was going through the LOD-1 problems (I know I shouldnt at this time) and found certain problems to which I was not able to apply the shortcut method Mr. Arun Sharma has displayed in his book. Can someone tell me if the following problems can be solved using the short cut or it is best solved using the orthodox weighted average method.

1. Average age of a cricket team of 11players is 30. Average age of 5players (captain excluded) is 27. Average age of another 5players different from the first set of 5players and excluding the captain is 29. What's the age of the captain?


Please let me know if there's a better way to solve than finding the age of the captain as:
30*11 - 27*5 - 29*5

Well there's a few more like these..But if someone can explain the funda then possibly I can do the rest myself...Please help.
