when u r given four values and you are asked to calculate the minimum % using all the four..you can use this formula(dis one is a shortcut)...otherwise you have to draw venn diagram involving all the four quantities and then look for max and min.

Re: The Official CAT 2007 Quant Thread - 01-11-2007, 07:18 PM

Here's how i interpret it sachin..
The min ppl with 2 items for lesser two pair(70,75) is 70+75-100=45
The min ppl with 2 items for bigger pair(80,85) is 80+85-100=65
That is min 45 ppl have item 1 and 2(say) so max ppl who dont have item 1 and 2 is 100-45=55
So min ppl who have all 4=65-55=10

nothing to do wit bigger pair and smaller pair...u can choose any pair you want
eg. if i go for (85,75) and (80,70)

85-(100-75)=60
80-(100-70)=50
60-(100-50)=10

thanks man...so in general this means for problems involving four entities,we make pairs to calculate min value of all four...is there any method to determine max also?

This one came in Time last week...

Q > Let (PQRST)base12 be a five digit number in base 12 with distinct non zero digits. All the possible three digits are now formed using the digits of the above number without repetition. What is the quotient when the sum of all such three digits numbers is divided by the sum of the digits of the original number??(Assume all the numbers to be in base 12)
