Re: DI MARATHON for CAT06 - 04-05-2006, 10:01 AM

I have got answer as

E=8 G=4 I=0 N=1 O=2 P=5 R=6 T=3 Y=7

482648
40117
621
--------
523386
--------

This is purely by hit and trial and few equations. Bheja khap gaya. Can't write what i scribbled in that one page. On second look even i was not able to understand what i had written.

Actually, for these types of problem just write few eqns which are clearly visible and then just hit and trial with some values. Eg -: P=G+1 E+G+some carry = 1T where 1 is ten's place and T is unit's place. there can't be 2 in ten's place for obvious reasons and so on.

This Q surely cannot come in CAT, if it does then answer by using options. This was one of the toughest problems of this type i have solved.

Now, since Q.1 has been destroyed lets take up Q.2 which has been posted earlier i guesss.

Re: DI MARATHON for CAT06 - 04-05-2006, 11:08 AM

cud just manage this much:
G has to be less than 9.
E+G+1 =10+O(oh) or E+G=10+O(oh).
and then I can think of hazaar possible equations cuz one the sum of any2 digits might not have a carry or have a carry o one.similarly a three digit no can at the most sum up to24(9+8+7), so even if we get 2 carry then too the maxx carry that can be generated shall be 2 only.
so, like now do we make all possible eqauations..or more thinking is required?????

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'

'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.

'I don't much care where --' said Alice.

'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.

Re: DI MARATHON for CAT06 - 04-05-2006, 11:39 AM

Problem 2

Eight women, including Ms Irwin, went into a department store to buy one item each. Each went directly to the floor where the item she needed was sold, made the purchase, and left immediately. Two items were sold on each of the store’s four floors (ground floor through fourth floor). Can you find each woman's full name (one was named Grace), the item she bought, the floor it was sold on, and, in the cases of the women who left the ground floor and how each arrived at and left the floor of their purchase?
(1) The three women who used the escalator at least once were Elsa, Ms King, and the woman who bought the oil painting; (2) The dress and the radio were sold on the same floor; (3) The three women who used the elevator to get both up and down were Delia (who bought the lamp), Ms Long, and the woman who bought the radio; (4) Ms Nelson got her item on the fourth floor; (5) Clara did not buy the ring. She and Beth went to the same floor; (6) The three women who did not use the elevator at all were Elsa, Ms Miller, and the woman who bought the coat; (7) Helen used both the elevator and escalator; ( The woman who bought the linens went down by escalator; (9) Ms Jonas and Alice took the elevator to their different floors. Flo and the woman who bought the books took the escalator up together, since they were going to the same floor. All four rode down on the elevator at the same time and met Ms Perkins as she entered it on the ground floor; (10) The only woman to use the stairs was Ms Owens, who did not make her purchase on the third floor.

One request to all of you pls keep the problems numbered and post another problem only when the previous problem has been answered.

That's fine that you have solved the given problem, Great Work ......... Man , kudos to U
However, I just wanted to be very sure that isn't there a specific approach to this sort of a problem. I believe hit and trial is pure luck.

Wonderfull.....

Yup thats how it goes ...and that hit and trial are in other words cases that u have to take and see the feasibility ..

This was a very tuff problem . Such questions must be left in one glance .
This was only to get the rust off ur brain ....

It says eight women in the question but then we get to see a lot of names of women in the whole question.. Am I tht bad in gettin the names of women?? Someone throw some light on this pls!

Edited:
Are the names in anyway used in common??. Like at one place they used the call name nd at next place the surname nd stuff like tht??

I dont read books/newspapers as they all have ugly prints!!

Names and surname are entirely different and both of them together will make a complete name for a woman.

In the Q when it is saying Ms ___ then it is refereing to surname and when no Ms/Mrs used then name

Re: DI MARATHON for CAT06 - 04-05-2006, 02:21 PM

hey guys I know question is bit difficult so try this for a warm up and them revert back to Problem # 2

Problem # 3

Six people with varying lifestyles had a certain breakfast time routine. They each had a particular breakfast, one being: anything available, at a certain time whilst enjoying a breakfast pastime. Breakfast times (all AM): 6:30, 6:50, 7:15, 7:35, 7:50 and 8:30. From the five clues given below name what each person ate while doing what, and when.
(1) The person who read the newspaper had breakfast later than the person who liked to listen to the news on the radio, but earlier than the person who enjoyed silence at breakfast time. (2) Jasmine had her breakfast directly before the person who had toast, who had breakfast directly before the person who listened to music on the radio. (3) Cereal was eaten 20 minutes after the person who watched the Breakfast News on TV. Shivvy ate breakfast at 7:15. Lalit had breakfast sometime after Madhuban. A banana was not eaten at half past the hour. (4) Cuckoo’s four cups of black coffee was not the breakfast taken last. Sausages & eggs was eaten directly after the toast. (5) Jog had his breakfast directly after the person who ate sausage & egg, but directly before the person whose idea of a fun breakfast was shouting at the children.
