Those which can not be expressed as roots of a polynomial equation with integer cofficients. For example, pi is a transcendental number, while root(2) is not as x^2-2=0
All transcendental are irrationals, converse need not be true.

I meant you can arrange a set of nothing, an empty set, in just one way—as nothing, an empty set Anyways that was meant to be taken on a lighter note.

I would like to correct you buddy. Square root of a number is always positive.
See, the roots maybe both +ve and -ve, but when we speak of square roots.. it's always the +ve root that we take.

I'm yet to find an explanation.. "why do we take the +ve root and why ignore the -ve ?"

Some say that's the definition.. but can sonmeone throw some light into this ?

its fine..... But would like to add something
what i think is that in real life situations in which we use quadratic equations or may be higher power equations to solve for real life things, we find that they r available in positive values only. as 4 example if we have to find some number of apples by using some quadratic equation we may end up with something like (x^2-9)=0, then we have to take the positive value only. so what i think is that it applies to generally all mathematical situations. Nothing meant to be offensive. Its just my view point.
