Suresh's Corner: Miscellaneous Questions From Quants - 09-08-2005, 10:15 AM

Hi, I am Suresh and I worked as a QUANT FACULTY in T.I.M.E since 2003and right now I am the franchisee of CL, Vijayawada. I am starting this thread to help the aspirants of CAT. I am not going to tell u the basic fundas but I am going to post questions in this thread and let's discuss them so that the basic fundas are revised.

Here is our first questions.

If CAT 2005 contains 150 questions and each question contains 4 options find the total number of ways in which a student can answer atleast 2 out of 150 questions.

Is the answer 5^150 -(1+150*4)= 5^150-601

hello naresh,
personally, i think we should consider if we can answer the question or not...And not the different ways of answering it...Because when not mentioned in the question i can even take it as 2^4 = 16 ways of answering each question...
regards,
-sagar.

Well Suresh as you might be aware any covert form of advertising is strictly frowned upon here and though as yet we havent seen any form of advertising from you just thought would put in a word... Well though it is not exactly obvious but having the institute's name in your nick is also a type of advertising....if your intentions were altruistic what's the purpose of having your institute's name in your nick? :whatthat:

Anyway as a member of this forum kindly adhere to the rules regarding the starting of threads....if you are unsure abt navigating around the forum go thro' the newbies link in my signature. As you might have observed the Quant forum is pretty much cluttered where multiple threads are running on the same topics. We will eventually clean it or merge it. Whatever do you mean by "Polydimensional math"? Kindly do rename the thread or see if it can be fitted in any of the existing threads....

We really do appreciate your effort in helping us out sincerely as long as the intentions are just that.....
Mucha Gracious!

Girish...!

Hi sagar

ur right. now use ur logic and say the more general answer is 17^150 -(1+ 150*16)
i took the qn as no of ways to be answered with single option to be answered...lets wait for clarification from suresh.

Hi Naresh

As u said a student may answer a question or he may not .So now let's verify the total chances that he can take with a question.
If I consider question no.1 i can take 5 chances with it namely answering either option A or B or C or D or I can leave it out.

So with each and every question I can take 5 chances.
So total no. of chance is 5^150.
From this I have to subtract Total no of ways of answering 0 questions as well as 1 question exactly which is 1+ 150x4 = 601

So the final answer is 5^ 150 - 601

arey yaar nothing wrong in "naming" your organization....it's good that you wrote in your first post "where" you were from...that is perfectly fine....but having a nick with the institute's name is a different matter altogether... anyway that apart do look into the renaming the thread or see if the problems can be fitted under the following threads

doubts in permutation & combination

Time speed, work, Alligations and mixtures problems (Time speed, work, Alligations and mixtures problems)

Quants Teasers (Quants Teasers)

mind blowing questions....@quant (mind blowing questions....@quant)

Number System (Number System)

hope that suffices...if your question doesnt cover any of the given topics do start a new thread...appropriately named....once again we really appreciate the help....

Girish...!

Edited To Add: This thread is being renamed as to have a central repository for all questions put forth by Suresh right at one place.
