hi suresh, 18720=13*3^2*2^5*5
so no of factors of 18720 = 2*3*6*2=72 and 24 is one of the factors.

question is very confusing.... Is it given that there are more than 18720 persons available among which these coins are to be distributed

the q's is
A pious rich man distributes certain amount of money on every Sunday to poor people. He always carries money in the denominations of 1 Rs and he also distributes equal amount of money to each and every person. On a particular Sunday if he takes 18,720 Rs with him find the probability that the money is divided among 24 people.
now suppose there are x persons and he had distributed y amount among them so x*y= 18720
similarly for y persons he will distribute x amount of money.
This way we are just looking at the factors of 18720 (and 24 is one of them)

So i should read the question as "the rich man can distribute money to any number of people, may not to all."
but The question said something else!

Re: Suresh's Corner: Miscellaneous Questions From Quants -
06-05-2006, 11:16 AM
Guys, the answer is 72. I am sorry for my previous post saying that there's a small mistake for the people who gave the answer 72, because I took the total money as 20,720 Rs.
Now here comes the explanation
Total money that is distributed is 18,720 Rs.
Now we have to calculate the total facators of this number for the following reason.
Now 18,720 =24 * 780
i.e we can interpret this two ways
1. 24 people each receiving 780 Rs
2. 780 people each receiving 24 Rs.
So total number of chances to distribute the money is nothing but it's total factors i.e 72 in this case out of which there is only one favourable chance
Hence the probability of distributing 18,720 Rs among 24 people is 1/72
I hope this explanation is clear
Guys, a small request--- people who r posting their answers in this thread please merely do not post ur answers, see that the expalnation is also given becuase the only purpose of starting this thread is to contribute something from my side to the test-takers. I request the new members to go through the initial pages of this thread so that they will get an idea regarding this thread.
Regards.
