arun, morpheus, slamjunk...
methinks u r not taking his post in the right spirit...
he's not exactly saying that he wants a job where he can prepare for cat during office hrs...
he's just talking abt night outs at work etc...

well..tallvishal...
i suggest u join a big company where u'll never be indispensible...
so if u wanna take 2 weeks off before cat it won't matter to ur company that much....
moreover in big companies nobody cares...
(err...when i say big i mean the number off ppl working there)...
and join someplace where they have cosmopolitan manners(i.e. they don't ask personal questions like 'why didn't u come yesterday?')...
i work in this company with just abt 200 ppl and ppl hv very very indian manners
so when i took one week off i had to answer (read lie) the watchman at the door, the receptionist, the cook and all my nosey teammates...
that's very irritating...
Sorry ...I beg to differ too....
It's not that big companies hire people to keep them working on CAT they hire to make them work ...And even for a small project with 20 people working they want all to be busy...
it's just that you are not busy for 14 hours a day.....
but 10 hours at least.

Now I work for a Big company and i faced similar problem as I faced in small company...and to tell u the truth First i worked for Indian company and now a MNC but there is hardly a difference.

what difference I found here is..... I feel I'm in big ....
People are the same Indian

How they differ from Other people....they don't understand that someone might be looking at the stars...
they want you to be working under them always.... at whatever level u r...

No hard feelings please.

I'm what I'm.

Common guys, Dont make fun of someone who's a bit lost after that disastrous CAT....(Me in the same boat :( )

And Coming to the work experience question, I second the advice that while you are working, work with strong focus and enthu. And until you are really running the show in your company, you can always manage time for your prep.

In the end it actually is the question of how confident are you to make it, and what your priorites are.

Work experience is utterly helpful when its genuine, suicidal when its just for name sake.

And yes, as someone said the attitude in adopting the latter case persists and will deifinitely reflect adversely in your career, later.

Cheers!!

Preparing for CAT while working is the coolest Idea..Coz Nothing like Work Ex with MBA...But it is Unethical to work on CAT when Office work is to be done....
apparently Not true ...CAT is not just IMS/CL notes ...
u can practice RC/speed reading skills on work related material ...though not the same as CAT but it is practice for sure...
u can do 10 minute Vocab workouts with the FRE tools floating around.
practice fractions, squares, cubes, shortcuts formulae .. ui just need to recall them thats it.

When employees are allowed some time of their own or the lean phases especially in IT Industry when there is no work..For Example US client Projects have free time during Christamas and Thanxgiving the its okay to Work on CAT but Not when theres lots *of work to do....
Managing time and toggling work and Cat is in itself the PRECURSOR to a successful Manager of TIME.
thast so not true

Its christmas the guys at client are off on vocation ..so is the IT Lead at GE but ..
there is a shit load they expect whn they get back in jan.

..I dont know whats lean time ...its 1 1/2 years in this IT company and no lean time ....its like this ..if u perform u are wanted every where ...
"apne hi pair pe kulhadi "

but i personally feel american clients specially GE are really demanding ...
IT companies (TCS,PCS) compete for GE projects ...resulting in lower price ..shorter time ... ur manager has no option but to put less people/resources and get work out of u in the short duration .... I am officially allowed sat,sun of.. but i get those once in a while. but i know its the initial phase in my carrier ..and rt now the experience really matters ..u learn a lot.

I say TCS/PCS bcause i am in one of them, and all account managers say only one thing ..if we dont do this fast and right the next project will go to the other ..I am sure the people in the other co. must be doing the same thing.
Divide and rule -- its still there (?!!!)

chill out !
hope some one from these companies post their comments ?
also whether they were lucky with leaves ?
this shld help tallvishal

..o u gotta keeep the faith

Clients everywhere are demanding...try a stint behind a showroom desk,or the credit card guy...remember how u shoo him off...suddenly ur time has so much value...

Its a fact...if u r paying someone sth , u demand the best out of him...U want his total unconditional sevice for his own benefit..the client expects to get expected and unexpected delight from ur services.

So nothing like one client being more demanding than others...they are same everywhere.
BTW , I service GE UK clients too ,and never allow my team to work on weekends! As they say , our employees are our best assets !!

heres what i know..

Companies in Mumbai in IT have longer time schedule( unofficially) then bangalore since bangalore had many MNCs and good traffic problem making time schedule of normal 8-9 hrs. In mumbai even one comes at 10.00 and goes at 6.00 pm , its too early for home.

I can very well understand what u mean, perhaps u didn't put it well.. which led to quite a few groans..!!
Preparing for CAT/GMAT along with work isn't always easy for everyone, u need lot of free time, relax and flexible schedules and supporting colleagues.
And in this regard company u working in matter a lot.
I know guys who have left their job and they have pretty good reason since they couldn't accommodate with the work and study at the same time.

There are companies where u would be required to attend your clients even on the weekends, work more than just 8 hours, your seniors won't respect your aim to go for higher studies studies, highly strict timings and tough to get away from office on short notices.

On the other hand, there are companies, which will provide you with best of the job, fix hours of working, option of working from home (I wish I could name few but m not sure), seniors are approachable at the same time they would often encourage you. Flexible timings in the sense that when u can complete your work on a day just spending 3-4 hours, you need not to stay for whole 8 hours to keep up with the expectations of your manager. These all things matter a lot.. and count well when u prepare for your Higher studies.
This all doesn't mean you are compromising with your work at office, rather it might encourage you to take up your office job with similar enthu... and u might better enjoy your work and perform well...!!
I know guys who are preparing for GMAT/CAT.. working with me... they even work from home.. and recently chosen as the "best performers" or many similar awards from the company. And the reason why they are very well managing both things together.. is just cause of flexibility they are granted from the company...!!
