hey peepz,

Will be appearing for my CAT exam this yr so i ve a couple of queries..
Firstly I wud like to know wat certificates wud be asked cos i am in engg 4th yr & by the time i wud get my calls i wud still not have all my marks memos...wats the protocol???
Also i wud like to know what is the weightage for the acads in the selection process..perhaps in the PI.. is it that only top acads make it through or a first class wud do??...also if somebody with prior exp cud fill me up on how this whole acads things work....it wud clear my mind a bit....

IIM A places lot of importance on acads.

Whatever you have till that period would suffice. Carry all the certificates that are worth showing.

coming straight to u'r second question, no one can actually answer it .
having excellent marks in acads does not mean that u wud be thru, and at the same time having bad marks does not mean that u wud not be thru.
u can take my example as the best one
i got a call from NITIE, which is supposed to be an institute that lays more stress on academic marks in the selection process. i stand in the top 3 of JNT university
in electrical engg, but got kicked off on my a** in NITIE as i cudn't substantiate my marks. i cudn't answer basics of electrical engg .
so, if u have really gud marks, the problem will be a bit more complicated , as u have to substantiate them.
not having good marks doesnot imply rejection, as i can show u umpteen number of ppl in the premier mgt institutes with academic %ages than 70.
so i hope that u'r doubts r clarified.

hey ravi ... i think your marks shouldnt be a factor in your mind ... i recall my IMS Centre Manager told me one thing ... If they were to give so much importance to marks, they would have increased the cutoffs to about 70% in graduation ..

You should be clear in your basic concepts ... the marks might matter ... but then they are what they are and won't be changed ... But what can help you is your attitude .. and you should be able to justify yourself ...

Not all students can be equally brilliant .. what is required is clarity of thought and vision ... Ya, marks maybe a factor incase 2 candidates are equally close .. but then they are not the only factor ...

acads are damm important..
sometimes u get calls based on your acads only...
and iam an example of that...
my engg aggregate was 85%..
i got a call from Spjain,tapmi and other institutes even my cat percentile was 82.
many of my freinds who got calls thru iim's had good acads.
iit bombay especially..i think stressed a lot on academics for freshers as my frends only with 85%+ got thru...
even guys with 4th and 21st rank in jmet did not get thu iitb.
u evn get ur iim calls and conversions based on academics.
so if one is not having good academics he must work hard to get a gr8 percentile that covers all them.
actually the logic behind is like this.
most of the students after reaching an iim relax......but a guy with a consistent acade3mic record implies that he never rests and works hard at every stage,
guys these were my personal views i got and framed after going thru calls of all major institutes.

newez...i guess ur academic performance has some bearin but to an extent ...academics (n by that i mean ur %ages n marks) can only add to ur %ile in ur cat or watever exam...tats abt it???therell be guys who ve 60% n r much more smarter than guys wit 90%...n have a better %ile than the other guys...so u c ur academics come into pic only if u ve ur %ile...n even then ..if ur able to justify watever marks u ve...its all well...
it can always be an advantage..very seldom a disadvantage...tats my opinion

Everything depends on CAT percentile at the end of the day ... acads can come into the picture during PI , as ppl above have said ... u have got to produce a little effort as to the q'ns asked in pi pertaining to ur field and by then im sure the writings on the wall ...

Acads do play an imp role in selection of many institutes like SPJain.Infact SPJain has it on its site too..heres the excerpt:

"The selection criteria for calling candidates for personal interviews and final admissions is based on multiple factors which are as follows:

-Past academic performance
-Quality and content of the essays in the application form
-Work experience, IF ANY, in terms of job content and organization
-Interview performance (applicable for final admissions only)
-Extra curricular activities, other interests and accomplishments
-CAT score "

So it seems that for SP , CAT scores are of least importance and they place more importance on Acads.

An insider told me that just gaining a good Percentage once in a particular standard does least matter..its consistency that is given importance and not a fluctuating graph unless u have a solid backup answer for the fluctuations.

And I know of at least three persons who were college or city level rankers in 12th and TYBCom and are in SPJain or an alumni. But another aquaintance who is in SP this year has been an average student but has apparently got thru coz of work ex in Citibank

hey Krain ... S P Jain even doesnt mind you not giving CAT ... thats if you are exceptional though .... since i know a person in my colony who got calls before the 2nd CAT ... THOUGH he had work experince for 2 years and is a CA ...so maybe that could be a factor !!!

Some points that help you ruminate in a better light :

1) Both in 2k2 and 2k3, I applied with 3 and 4yrs workexp respectively to SPJain. Put all the nice words in the essays. Got it reviewed by my peers who also said it was very good. Had 98.xx and 96.xx %iles in both years. Result : dinged both the times. This has lead me to believe that SPJain considers your grad scores as a sieve(in grad 51% and postgrad 65%) to remove chaff like me :(

2) This time IIM-A gave calls *only* to people with great acads. Even if you had 99.6x%ile (which Akshay - IIML batch of 2006 had) it didnot give merit if you just had a first class.

3) At the same time, there have been people accepted at IIM-C who took 6years to complete their B.E. Similarily I know of FMS, MDI admitting people with low %age in my experience over the last few years.

Hence I would say, it does matter. But not to the extent that you don't end up getting anywhere. So give it your shot, let IIM-A and SPJain reject, there are still loads of other good MBA instis willing to give you a shot.
