Usefulness is a relative concept. Depends on what is your objective. If you want to marry a Chinese chick, then it is definitely useful. If your intersted in umderstanding Chinese culture, it is useful. Similary if you want to take up studies on ancient chinese medicine or Confusicion philosophy, it is useful.

In terms of employment, if you want to work as an English teacher in China, probably yes. I heard they have great demand for English teachers. Or you could find work as Chinese translators. Indian It companies like Infosys seem to be taking up projects for Chinee companies.

I know at least one B-School that beleives Chinese is important for managers. I am not sure of that. Maybe it is useful for Indian companies having Chinese operations. For Chinese comapnies, I am sure there are enough people there itself and they would not need Indians. Also the exchange rate is not so lucrative for Indians to desire to work in China. Most likely a qualified peron can find a better job in India itself.

Couldn't control... Sorry to be a little off track here. But just like there is no such language as "Indian", there is no such language known as Chinese. Tehre are two languages in the Chinese subcontinent. Cantonese - spoken mostly in Hong Kong. Madarin - which is spoken in Mainland China.

More widely spoken of the two is Mandarin... and my guess is you are referreing to Mandarin only.

Cheers,
The Teacher

Bad thing - Someone trying to advertise via his signature and starting threads just for the heck of it.

Good thing - Puys coming up and helping out, even though the query is dubious. Cheers for you guys!

Thread locked and signature snipped. Please continue on the thread mentioned by kill_the_cat

Cheers,
Rohit
