Suggestion - 17-04-2005, 07:32 PM

First of all, let me thank the Moderators and the Super Moderators for doing a superb job.
The site is gr8 in all respects, but I have made one observation. On the famous thread "Once upon a time", there are a huge number of posts every hour. At times, 2-3 people post their replies at the same time which leads to conflict and members are confused which version to choose to continue the story forward. If we can have some kind of Concurrency Control in posting replies, that problem can be solved. I know it is not easy, but definitely worth a try.

Cheers!

hey PG,

I had a query that can double up as a suggestion as well.

I notice that the majority of junta here is from IT..........now i too work in an IT MNC and from time to time my company goes on a recuitment spree.......now if i want to inform the junta here abt that so that ppl here can benefit, what's the route?

I mean, for starters, is it allowed to post such info?
If yes, is it possible to post such info without displaying to the public which company u belong to....what i am arriving at is - say if i post info abt recruitment at my compant today- i do not want 100 irrelevant resumes coming to me...and i also don't want ppl to keep posting resumes 6 months after the deadline.....so just a thought.... (why i bring up this point - in a mailing list ur earlier mails are forgotten and ppl rarely go to the archives of a jobgroup to look up earlier msgs...but on a thread ur message will be posted for eternity even though it may become irrelevant after a month)

I know that the basic aim of PG is not to help ppl in finding better jobs, but rather in helping them prepare for B-School entrance.......but can we give this option a sound hearing?

Good idea there. But why would someone email you the resumes unless you ask for the resumes? I thought the co. email ID would be listed? But here again, we do have an issue as to how to moderate such postings. There is a fair enough chance that people start flooding the forum with heaps n heaps of job offers

To Those Who Care - 21-04-2005, 01:37 PM

Hi,
i am sandeep (IIT KGP 2004 batch). I made it through CAT this year (99.95%ile) and am going to join IIMB.
I will not pen panegyrics in the praise of this forum or go hyperbolic highlighting the contributions of this forum in my CAT saga. but, in a very matter-of-fact way, this forum has definitely been a presence in my life, a loyal companion it has been through the trials and tribulations of the past one year ( a rather difficult one for personal reasons). I have visited this place oftener to seek solace and companionship or gain inspiration than to obtain any CAT gyaan as such - not to diminish the importance of the CAT fundas being doled out here.
I have definitely been guilty of not posting more frequently on this forum but i feel it is much better to refrain from posting if you have nothinmg significant to convey than to post a whole lot of balderdash, excuse my harshness.
It has been a painful experience observing how the quality of posts has increasingly gone down - ranging from poor to utter nonsense in some cases. The B vs C discussion that has invited so much of mudslinging and poostings on fake identities reminds one so clearly of the XLRI issue last year. Without blaming anyone in particular, i must say that, i have not come across many objective or impartial advises on the forum. The bickering shows these supposedly great institutes in such a poor light that i, at one point of time, was seriously considering chucking both b and c for l- just to make a point. - only that would have made no points and i am not stupid emough to judge an institue by a few souls with their misdirected enthusiasm. i am chosing B and for purely personal reasons and on solely my own judgement (taking inputs frm friends and parents). i don't think a few jobs here and there would make any difference to me...i back myself to get the best job if i wish to and i don't think i am looking for the brand of an institute to see me through the struggles of this life. for me the current choice that we r making is one of the easier ones i would have to face in this life.
when we post on this forum, we post as responsible members of this forum and not as loyal stooges of different b-schools. we are here to help and not to confuse or slander. isn't ity sad enough to know that two of our best b-chools,from all appearances, fudge data to get any mileage. i credit everyone appearing for (or having cleared) CAT with this basic maturity but evidently CAT is not a very good parameter to judge one's maturity. for doesn't this mudslinging, don't these inane and hollow "my b-school rocks" posts bring us out as ridiculously infantile. this forum doesn't deserve these posts . i don't think pagalguy or the mods can do anything to stop such juvenile posts. it is our responsibility. i am joining b and i don't think (or care if) it is the best b-school in the country. nor for that matter do ithink c or a is. from all appearances these b-schools don't teach their students honesty, integrity, modesty. i am going to b for want of a btter choice. i would any day prefer an honest school to a dishonest one.
i may have been a little too harsh...but then i haven't posted often enough and this post is the outpouring of all the pain and frustration i have undergone on seeing the degradation of this forum. This forum and Pagalguy don't deserve this.

hi Allwin,

I have had previous exp of posting job openings in mailgroups and you start getting all sorts of resumes - most of them irrelevant. Jobgrops that survive are the ones where the mods insist that members mail their resumes only when they are eligible.

Hence, I wanted to raise this point, bcoz an initiative to post job openings won't be useful without your(and other mods') active support.

You will have to keep reminding ppl to respond to a job opening only when they are eligible - and that means more work for you and your mods! (plz don't kill me for suggesting this)

Now, coming to the point.......

I think that if we agree to post job openings on this site then we can work on the following suggestion:

We create a forum (or a sub forum) titled "Job Openings" and have threads there for different job profiles , eg, IT freshers, IT experienced, Manufacturing, Managerial, etc

Then we allocate each thread to a mod and only that mod can post on the concerned thread. This will ensure that we don't have an unnecessary deluge of posts.

If a member wants to post a job opening, he/she sends a PM to the concerned mod (the format of the subject for the PM and the mod's name shd be mentioned in the relevant thread). The PM shd be sent only to the concerned mod AND NO ONE ELSE. Also, the subject of the post should be in the prescribed format. This will reduce the burden of the mod and he/she can straightaway delete any non-conforming PM.

Another imp point here can be that a mod always edits his previous post on a job thread instead of making a new post. This will ensure that he/she keeps overwriting (deleting) obsolete info e.g info abt a walkin after the walkin date is past.

If the PM is relevant, the mod posts the info on the relevant thread BUT REMOVES THE MAIL ID OF THE PERSON who gave this info. Instead his userid on PG is mentioned. All interested should be requested to send a PM to the concerned person assuring him that they are eligible and requesting his mail id.

The concerned person responds via PM or mail and then the resumes are sent across!!!

I know this sounds like a long and bureaucratic process , but this will ensure that there are no irrelevant spams on the forum and the person who posts job openings is also kept safe from spams.

Do let us know your views on this.

Intangible

we used to have that. due to too much traffic on the forum - the forum had to be downgraded. we are currently accepting contributions to support the forum. if you are interested, check the link in my signature.

Thanx...

Well, this is not really a bug, but the thing that i have noticed is that on the list of currently active users, all the users succeeding a moderator are separated by commas in blue colour rather than black. I know its a very minor thing, but couldnt help reporting.
