hey..this new thread issue is something that happens because not everyone has the patience to go through the member FAQ..so why not sjhorten the process..

hey PG..since we cannot do bulk pms' (now that the facility is disabled), the only guy who can do it is u..so just compose a new msg to be sent to ALL PGites reminding them of some of the rules regarding new posts..

Along with bulk PMs, as Quint has mentioned in the prev post, maybe also a page which comes up whenever anyone clicks on 'New topic' to start a thread? The page should be short enough to be read in a minute or so (By an avg guy, not the VA 100 pctiler ). It should have a bulletted format in which all the conditions for starting a new thread are listed, i.e. (Just indicative, invite ppl to add to this list):

1. Thread should be novel. This is perhaps the most important thing. The reader should be clearly taught how to search the forum to see if the intended thread already exists. Honestly, the search function link is too small and is hard to notice. I myself had spent nearly a week on the forum before I even saw it and what it did. I suggest we make it bigger or otherwise more prominent.

2. Thread should be relevant to the forum (i.e. don't start 'IIM B unpredictability' discussion in ChitChat; and don't start 'My favorite Mithun Chakraborty movies' in Quantitative Ques & Ans.)

3. Thread should be relevant in itself. Think before starting a thread which is on some truly arcane topic on which you can't realistically expect any replies. This might reduce the postings on ChitChat, which is a mixed blessing, as Mod ppl's workload will decrease, but we may lose the chance to see some great thread. It's a tradeoff and its upto the A. Ignoramus to decide which way to go.

We should remember that we too were n00bs once, though we have lost our innocence now. Actually compared to most ppl here, I'm still a n00b. Most of these new guys should turn out to be produtive/helpful/funny/generallydesirable members of the forum, we just need to educate them a bit in the early days.

Of course, all the above is JMHO. I can't really claim to tell you guys anything when some of you have 4000+ posts while I haven't even made my century yet.

No one can go back and make a brand new start, but everyone can start today and make a brand new end.

guyz,as far as noobies r concerned(i too feel noob beside u guyz) they take some time to lose their innosense.i feel most of the redundant threads come b'cause noobs don use search feature well.
so i suggest that a sticky on how well the search feature can be useful is enough to cut these threads by half. Also prepare a list of volunteers and encourage noobs to p.m these guyz for suggestions before posting new threads.i think at ne point of time atleast there's 1 of those old horses lying around. Also the volunteers may specify the timings suited for them to give suggestions and as such we will have atleast 1 volunteer to suggest these noobies at ne point of time.

define nOOb
does it have to do with how many stars one sports?
cuz i know of ppl who in times-gone-by have spammed their way into 5stardom
Point noted pg..
guess we all need to use the search function a bit more and look for threads of the kind we're thinking of starting...
maybe the link to this thread ought to be mass pmd to everyone..as someone suggested?

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo...;-)

s/locking/deleting/ - 01-01-2005, 01:13 PM

Just another thought although NOT exactly about the topic PG started the thread with ....but still........ why not delete the unnecessary threads rather than simply locking.....that way even the search will be more relevant....

Just my opinion
