as far as your question goes.....my personal opinion is that work-ex helps you in 2 ways for mba:
1. It gives impetus to your application
2. You have a better idea of what you want (though you can never be sure)

Though i feel that if you are able to get into a good college than you should not give it up as it is not sure whether u'll be lucky enough to clear the entrance next year. Also a lot of freshers do make it to the IIMs and other colleges every year.

But then again. it is a personal view point!!

I am Diganta and I just got introduced to PG thru a colleague of mine who's an MBA aspirant. Abt me, I've done my B.E in Chemical Engg from a State Engg College (AEC) and have been working with an Indian e-Sourcing co since the past 3 yrs as a functional consultant.
Plan to take the GMAT next year and apply for the 2010 session. Am following the regular posts on the GMAT forums viz. study resource related and admission related.
