| Forum Upgrades - June 2008 -
12-06-2008, 01:09 AM
As all of you must have noticed there have been a few upgrades to the forum recently. The profile page has undergone a revamp and there are many more things to do there. You have the ability to create albums and upload photos to your profiles, create or join social groups, write messages on profiles, see recent vistors to your profiles etc etc
So explore and enjoy the new features added.
Please report bugs or any functionality that you needs a bit of tweaking here
Few comments from my side:
1. There should be an option available to search 'groaned' posts as it was available earlier
2. An addition to include the gtalk ids in profile should be made as it is the most popular form of instant messaging today
3. Ability to make the profile private and viewable only to people in my friend list.. We had this option earlier. I think we have lost it with this upgrade.. Not sure. .can anyone else double check?
Request everyone to provide feedback as well about the upgrades
PS: All those who think that they have lost their friend list completely, you only have to go to the link: http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/profile.php?do=buddylist and add all your friends again one more time.. So the list is till there only you need to send an invite one more time so that they are visible in your list again
So pour in your comments here.. We are listening | | | | | The Following 13 Users Say Thank You to nikhilkulk For This Useful Post: | andy_jaan (12-06-2008), avinav2712 (16-06-2008), chop suey (12-06-2008), deep_agrawal (12-06-2008), diablorulez (12-06-2008), gantis (12-06-2008), Greenspan (12-06-2008), hareshmandani (12-06-2008), intello (14-06-2008), krsh.vik (12-06-2008), sid_dharth (12-06-2008), spirit11 (19-06-2008), uRmad (12-06-2008)

A bug related to a new feature
When a mod thanks a user, his/her thank is shown in blue/green/red. However, all the people thanking after that have their thanked dates shown in the MOD color.
EDIT: Another new feature. Every user can set their current status just below their username
Nice one

Hi,
I'm still coming to terms with the forum and the threads.
Lots to explore ahead.
Noticed an issue on the friend list page: When I checked my profile and clicked on "My Friends", the next page "Contacts and Friends" had a UI distortion. There is a checkbox misalignment. When the Show Avtars is checked, the check-boxes for each people on the list, are displayed at the top left corner of the box, over the avtar pic!
Attaching a snapshot!
Cheers

I came across somethings that I found quite distracting: - The Profile opens but the tabs are all over the place but seem to arrange itself briefly. The problem seems to be resolved.
- I feel that the first tab displayed on the profile page should be the about me. It goes directly to the visitor's comment.
- Also, could the tabs be arranged where each of them are in view?
- Comments on the profile page and social groups are a soft delete. It looks rather messy.
- While posting a comment in the social groups, I can post only when I go advanced.
Other wise the it looks really good and I look forward to using it more.

guy i noticed that the feature called PG notification (cant remember the exact name ) which we had below the shoutbox window has been replaced by 'PaGaLGuY.com - The Everything of MBA, CAT 2008, GMAT, XAT, IIM Statistics'
a> the PG notification thing that we had where in u could track all the latest happening on PG like upcoming meets, new contest n their deadlines n stuff was a very useful feature n should be brought back...or is it that it has been put somewhere i cant find
b> the data is 'PaGaLGuY.com - The Everything of MBA, CAT 2008, GMAT, XAT, IIM Statistics' is redundant as it is already being displayed on the top against my profile pic on the same page | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to chop suey For This Useful Post:

The info about threads, posts etc is displayed twice on the forum page- once on the top of the page and second time towards the end. I guess we can do with one of those
For example right now Threads: 28,738, Posts: 1,140,911, Members: 210,204 Welcome to our newest member, ch33ku
is displayed twice on the page

Well...
I'm off the forum for close on to two & a half days (when I'm otherwise perennially online) and here I find a lot of changes have taken place.
My two pennies on the changes themselves, and not any technical errors - those will come later.
We are presently complaining of the loss of quality in posts and the average membership. I am getting 'fraandship' requests on PM every now and then. We are also talking about making some veteran members some sort of community leaders or mods to get this under control. On the other hand, as I enlist below, we are also encouraging such behavior. PaGaLGuY.com is not Facebook or MySpace or Orkut. These are pureplay community building websites. PG has a core competency of creating a community of MBA Aspirants - which it already has done so successfully - and helping them out. The present changes are not reflecting these facts. A 'Social Community' does not address any facet of the MBA story that PG has come to represent. Effectively, it is just an extra addon to the main forum. I personally feel that these changes are not helping the MBA aspirants directly. Any change done to the forum must first reflect support to MBA aspirants. If they do anything more than that, welcome. but firstly, help. The site is presently looking nearly like a hodgepodge of Orkut & Facebook with PG's colour template.
Please do not misunderstand my outburst. The PGHQ and the people who work there have spent some thought behind this, but this post reflects what I personally think. I believe that if required we can start off another section that can be devoted to purely community building - the MBA part left aside. But the forum should not be changed to become another Orkut.
Regards,

Regards,
Grondmaster | i completely second that.....
the current changes are more of turning toward networking sites....
which is good but not the purpose of PG.....
also i faced a lot of problems logging in today...
had to finally reset my password to get access.....

totally agree with grondmaster. This is something i didn't expect from PG as they have always innovated new things & features for the benefit of the members by doing it 'insanely different'.
Using ideas from social networking sites and incorporating them with a twist maybe useful in what im assuming and I maybe wrong.... is a certain direction PG is going but speaking as a member who has seen a lot over here , this wasn't expected and the surprising thing is , there wasn't anything remotely hinting about this or asking the members about these changes before implementing which has been done in the past.
well as long the forum aspect remains the core of PG , i am happy & welcome & wish PG all the best in whatever they are trying to achieve from the changes & additions. | | | | | The Following 4 Users Say Thank You to puneet For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
