Never able to find the discussion thread you're looking for?
Or new to PaGaLGuY?
Then I'd recommend just going through this thread and I'm sure you'll become a better 'Search-er' by the end of it.
The VB Search could definitely be stronger - but since it is not perfect, there are still ways to get the most out of it. The most important rule: Always use the Advanced Search option.
(Top of the page in the cell which says SEARCH, a left click on the search option would give you the option of an Advanced Search)
Now to prove why that is the most important rule - let us have a simple comparison between the Simple Direct Search and the Advanced Search:
Simple Search:
Search String: MICA
Result: No MICA related thread in the top 8 results.
Advanced Search:
Using the settings: 'Search Titles Only'
Result: Almost all the threads displayed are related to MICA
The difference is pretty clear.
Now let us learn how to use the Advanced Search option. 2nd most important rule: Use the 'Search Titles Only' option
Why? Because as of today (2:25 PM, February 27, 2007) there are 20,415 threads on PaGaLGuY and 6,99,889 posts.
So your search string would end up giving you an insane no. of irrelevant mention in a huge no. of posts.
(I have demonstrated this a little later)
So basically this is how you search page should look like before you are ready to search:
I personally always use the option..
Find threads with At Least: 15 replies
I would recommend the same - as this ensures you don't end up getting empty discussions or threads which might not contain too much information. But this would again depend on what you are searching for...
Now let us imagine you are interested in IIM Ahmedabad (I mean which MBA aspirant in our country is not?)
Let us first see what a simple search would give us: Result and Conclusion: Zero relevance
Now here comes the problem.
Even using the Advanced Search option with the input: IIM A would not give you IIM A related threads!
Why?
Well because the A is automatically ignored.
And something as obvious as putting it between inverted commas and searching for 'iim a' might work on google but not here!
So we'll see some alternate options that you can play around with...
The above are the results of few related search queries.
Conclusion: You'll see some threads in all the grids are unique....thus the only conclusion that can be drawn is that - The more you search, the more information you'll find.
And one needs to try out different strings especially when searching for something particular like say Placements or GD PI Experiences.
And the most important conclusion would be to avoid using the - Search Entire posts option and always use the Search Titles Only option.
Say I want to find IIM GD PI experiences or wait list figures of last year: Use the options available at the advanced search page like - 'Find posts from' and 'Sort Results By'.
A little more time invested in searching for the right thing - will get u the perfect search results. Some other features -
Say you want to find a particular post or thread by a user - use the Search by user name field.
'Search in forum(s)' also helps you when you want to search about Music or cricket!
Please feel free to share your search tips and tricks here...
Cheers,
Ekalavya

Not satisfied with the above search tutorial?
Love google too much?
So are you aware that you can use Google to search at PaGaLGuY.com. It is very simple and at times gets you better results!
Use the following steps:
1) Google
2) In the search box type your query and follow it with site:pagalguy.com So for example: MICA
Search for: mica site:pagalguy.com And this is what you'll get..
Another example: iim gd pi experiences:
Now let us imagine that you are interested only in IIM Bangalore gd pi experiences. Search strings: iim b gd pi experience site:pagalguy.com iim bangalore gd pi experience site:pagalguy.com
So basically you can use this method to make a lot of more targeted searches.
I am sure the more you play around with searching - the easier it'll get to make specific searches.
Infact I was able to use this to find guys having got calls from the IIM's with a particular profile over the last 3+ years..
Feel free to share other tips and tricks.
Cheers,

Jut came across the new 'Tag' feature on PG....
all you have to do is to go to http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/
go to a particular forum for example.... Other Exams - XAT, FMS, JMET, SNAP etc
press on one of the 'Popular Tags' that you are looking for..for example.. iift
and it shows up all relevant threads for IIFT..
and it is really specific..much better than the earlier search..
almost as good as Google ..should be of great help .
..specially for newbies...
Great Job Guys!!!

Tanveer

thnks | On the top of each Forum, you will find a button called "New Thread" Which you can click to start a new thread. However, do go through the ' Visual Guide to PG (For Newbies: Mahip's Visual Guide to Navigate Around the Forum)' before starting any new thread. Also, search the forums for the specific information that you want to find via this thread. Maybe it already exists, and your starting the new thread is useless. You can also use tags to search. The search and tag links are given in my signature below.
