Hey,
these 2 are very different exams, each testing ur quantitative, logical reasoning, verbal ability, comprehension, data interpretation skills in different ways.
XAT is different from CAT in many ways, for eg. the time duration was 2 hrs in case of XAT2008 followed by a 20 mins essay writing. Quant n DI are together as one section and there is a section on LR and Decision making. Both of the exams require you to select the doable questions( in given time) and do them correctly. In XAT there is differential negative marking scheme. And XAT 2008 had 120 ques compared to 75 in CAT 2008. In CAT 2008 to get abt 95 %ile one needed to do about 24-25 ques correctly out of 75 whereas in XAT 2008 about 34-36 right solutions( out of 120) would have fetched approx 95%ile.So u can see for yourself whether it is test of speed or accuracy. And One should always try to maximise ones score by choosing the most doable( easy/straightforward/from strong areas ) questions and then doing them accurately in least time. The pattern can vary from year to year but this approach will assure one performs ones level best.
I hope i have answered your query.
All d best
