Hi friends,

Finally I found the thread.1 guy thankfully put me on the right tracK!!

i have my gd/pi on the 15th.

I 'd just like to know a few things:

1.The comp sc ppl are being grilled on the their technical. So preapring 1 subject
will do and they asking ur fav subject or they asking anything under the sun?
what were ppl quizzed on----Data structures or networks by any chyance?

2. How long is the complete process

i've heard that usually the gds end up being a fish market..in such a situation is it better to keep shut and avoid adding to the chaos, hoping theyd ask u to summarise...............
or still get into it headlong?
I'm reallyyyy unsure of this!would just like opinions!

Thanx a ton!

Well I made the exact same mistake!!
Now I'm worried. Well, I should say even more than usually worried.

Those who have work ex kindly let me know

1. whether did you get that work ex (page 9) got sealed from your company?

2. Do they grill you only on work ex or also stroll back to techi age of Engineering too? (I am really afraid yaar, its been 3 years since I haven't read theory books!! )

3. Do they carry the Bio Sketch with them?

Also, guys tell us if they are insisting on particular dress code? Coz its very hot and suit wouldn't make sense!! Also, anyone's there on 18th 4pm batch at Mumbai???

Thanx in anticipation...
Hi there!

1. i did not get it sealed from the company.. coz i got it in the company letter head.... and they dont give a seal ... i think if u r getting the exp letter in the company letter head u do not require a seal...

2. They only asked me qtns relatign to work ex.. and man!! uve got 3 years of experience... u have nthg to worry.. my personal opinion ok!! i have jus 1.5 years exp and they did not ask me anything relating to my engg acads...

3. You will be asked to give them the attested copy of the form.. and they will go thru it in front of u.. atleast thats wat happened to me... i dint see the original with them.... atleast they did not have it in front of them.... but i was the first persoin to be interviewed that day.. so it cud also be that they took a while to get things in order...

Hope that answers ur queries.. gud luck!!

gd/pi chennai experience - 14-03-2005, 09:32 AM

hey., did the gd/pi on the 12th at chennai., the experience was similar to that of platinum's so only a few points to add.... the feeling i got from the start of the gd was that atleast 70% of the decision of whether you are making it into nmims or not ...was made before the gd/pi sessions started....the remaining only the 30% was at stake....what led to this feeling was that the gd and the pi were good for everybody and the questions were plain and simple...cant see how they would evaluate and select the 200 odd people as almost everyone has done well.the process is not a sham or farce... but looks like the written test score has a "larger than before realised" role to play... also the number of students that came were quite less considering the 1801 people called... chennai managed 40 students...since there wasn't any other time alloted at che...i guess that would be the bulk of the crowd.... but bangalore had two dates alloted and if i am right,a total of four sessions....i request the others who have finished their gd/pi at other centres to post their exp and also the rough no of students who were present there...this would give us an idea of how many people actually turned up as i feel that will be a significant factor in the reduction of the sample set from 1801.

also would request vibhav or others from nmims to share their views as they have been through the process last year..

THERE IS NO FINISHING LINE !!!

Went to the NMIMS GD..was in 2 minds whether to go there or catch a movie coz i had an unconvertable rank.

GD was in NMKRV College bangalore, rather well organised with good support from NMKRV staff.

There ware 5 batches in the afternoon batch. most of the participants were freshers..and (not meant in a derogratory way) Boys.

GD topics given were
1) Should we have an Economic watch dog like us handling our economy
2) Villages are a burden on india or something to that effect

We chose Topic one after a very Maichivellian vote.

The group was agressive and on some fronts a little over the top however we managed to slug it out without punching each other.

PI was good.Everyone left the PI feeling good because the questions were subjective and since everyone has an opinion on everything in our times there was a lot of misplaced satisfaction.

My interview was very converstional. The questions were mostly on what i do at work. What i perceive to be my strengths and weakness why MBA etc.As i said very easy to answer but like SP Jain the evaluation will probably be subjective...we will never know where we screwed up.

I did not have high expectations from the NM GD/PI process however it was surprisingly well organised. No one had to wait time was strictly adhered to without rushing and generely there were no stressfull moments for anyone.

My take : Dont go by GD PI if you have a high rank in your SMAT and do not screw it up by being unduly agressive/TOngue in the GD PI you are through.

Anyone ranked below 600...i doubt we can convert this becos the PI marks for all candidates will be similar ( due to the interviewing best GD guy and the worst GD guy is never more than 8-10 marks( assuming 30 is the evaluation score).People are reluctant to give more than 7-8 in any parameter even if you are very good.

Lets wait and see.

Best of luck to the rest.

Name: Niraj Bagri

BE( comp sci), 2004 passout, 71.1%
work-ex: NIL

GD experience:

GD topic (we were given 2 options and we agreed for the following, infact all the 4 grps had the asme option and all of them opted for the same):

1) Indian villages are our weakness.

2 moderators. (all the 4 grps started simultaneously, so in all 8 mods)

there were 3 salient features of our GD
1) it was bad
2) it was very bad
3) it was very very bad

it was a classic example of fish-market scenario. everybody spoke but nobody was heard.
it was really kind on moderators' part to allow us to bark for the entire 20 minutes.

I tried to play peace but nobody was interested. finally, raised my voice on a couple of occasions to keep others quiet for a fraction of a second so that i could put across my points. all-in-all, nothing worth mentioning abt it.

PI experience:

2 mods (diff from GD panel). very soft spoken lady and equally charming gentleman.

panel-1(p1): lady
panel-2(p2): guy

p1- so, you are Niraj. What have you been doing since 2004 (after graduation).
Niraj- ma'am, i was interested in MBA from my engg days, so i was preparing for entrance exams and exploring the area of specialization for the MBA course. (i knew they wanted to know why didn't i go for any job, so i started covering my ass before getting drilled ) ma'am, i didn't go for any job because i think its ethically incorrect to join a company and leave it after 5-6 months to pursue higher studies. moreover, most of the IT firms have 1-2 yrs' service-bond and i didn't want to offend it. as i was hell-bent on MBA course, I thought of applying for these jobs after the admission season gets over and i get a clearer picture as to where i stand. (both panelists were impressed by the answer )

p2- so, what have you decided?
Niraj- Finance.

p2- from comp. sci. engg to finance??
Niraj: sir, we have been taught analysing and problem solving skills in engg and finance requires similar skills. moreover, on a personal front, analysing and problem solving techniques are my strenghts(it was mentioned in the bio-sketch also.)

p2- so, which area of finance are u interested in?
Niraj- sir, its still early to comment on it cos i don't have complete knowledge of it. but, off-late i have been attracted towards financial planning and investment banking.

p2- since you are adamant on investment banking.........
Niraj- sir, i think i couldn't put across myself properly. I am not adamant on any super-specialization. but yes, investment banking has caught my fancy.

p2- thats ok, whats the work of an investment banker?
Niraj- sir , investment bankers are mostly into portfolio management, IPOs and financial planning of companies.

p2- don't you think that this job involves lot of legal issues and can be handled better by a CA or CS.
Niraj- thats where I expect NM to come into picture and equip me with reqd expertise. moreover, all these financial firms have legal depts to take care of legal issues. my domain will cater in and around financial advices.

p2- which company would u like to work with after MBA? i mean, which are the investment banking firms in india.
Niraj: JM Morgan Stanley, HSBC etc....sir, just the other day, I read in ET that many foreign banks like Goldman Sachs, Deutshe BAnk are planning to start banking operations in india.

p2- Deutshe Bank is already operational in india.
Niraj- sir, i mean, they want to obtain license for full-fledged banking operations.

p1&p2- they have a presence in india.
Niraj- then i guess my information is incorrect here

p2- are you willing to relocate to mumbai?
Niraj- that goes without saying sir. my area of interest is finance and india's capital market is dominated and controlled by mumbai. so, its an obvious choice for me.

p1- do u have any relatives in mumbai?
Niraj- my cousins stay in andheri. i have been to mumbai on couple of occasions and i am pretty comfortable with it's lifestyle.

p1- which other mumbai college have you applied to?
Niraj- none other than NMs. i did apply to SP Jain but for their Dubai course. I managed to convert the call but their last date for the payment of fee was too early an it wasn't financially feasable for me to comply with it.

p1- dubai!! interesting.......why dubai?
Niraj- ma'am, the course had super specialization in investment banking and moreover dubai has a lot of potential to grow in terms of finance. they generate lot of revenue through tourism and require financial planners to manage their funds. thats the reason, most of the financial firms have their presence in dubai today.

p1- you have mentioned in the form taht you have recieved certificates for performance in GK tests at national and international level.....whats that?
Niraj- ma'am, these tests were conducted annually by United Nations, and hence its termed as international-level tests. I do have certificates for the same.

p2- ok, what have u been doing during ur college days?
Niraj- sir, i participated in many extra-curricular acticities in college and was instrumental in organising the college fest. other than that, it was during my college days that i was attratced towards business magazines and hence interest towards MBA.

p2- which magazines do u read?
Niraj- Business Today, Business World and Business India. I also read ET regularly.

p2- acha, tell me about any interestnig article from Business Today.
Niraj- sir, the latest issue of all these magazines commented on budget. and all of them did a fair job. (after some thinking) i had read abt "pantaloons" in BT. the way in which Kishore Biyani transformed a small retail shop into a 700-crore conglomerate is really commendable. it was an interesting article to read. moreover, the basic columns of these magazines are pretty interesting. for eg. business india gives facts and figures and recent developments of corporate world in all it's issues. thats really interesting.

p1- are you a native of bangalore?
Niraj- no ma'am. i am basically from kolkata. my parents stay in kolkata. i did my graduation from bangalore and stayed back coz i had given bangalore as my test and GD/PI centres.

p1- ok, you can leave.
Niraj- thank you.

PI lasted for 8-10 minutes only. what say friends? do i stand a chance?

Niraj
Hi niraj

Hi there,

Dunno what to interpret..only one thing...it was just a money making process...

last year...i did not have a good score...still i went for the GD/PI...obviously....this year again i did not have a good rank....again i did went for the GD/PI ...and just one conclusion...everybody with a good rank is going to get thro....its all set whom to take and whom not to take....first 200 damn sure to get in...except a few cases...and till rank 550 a realistic chance to get in as well as to get within the waitlist...

If you have a exceptional work-ex...then you mite be considered for a pathetic rank...

but still.....my gd topics were
1. Work-ex should be a prerequisite for Management Education
2. Leaders are not born but made.

Our group selected the first topic...i had a reasonably good GD...and my hopes raised of performing exceptional in the interview...but alas, interview last only for 5-7 minutes....

My questions were
What does your Father Do
What does your Mother Do
What is the meaning of your Name
Why MBA

Thats it....they thanked me and asked me to take the leave

I guess my interview was like my interview taken when i wanted an admission in a school

anyways, thats the end of the season for me....

adios to next year....hopefully, moi comes back with rejuvenated confidence and crack each and every exam

Best of luck for everybody whose GD/PI is still left...and also Best of Luck for Results

Adios
Rikesh
