COURSE OUTLINE
The Department adopts a balanced approach towards professional management by focusing on both theoretical learning and hands on practical learning through fieldwork. The evaluation is of a continuous nature where the academic performance is evaluated on the basis of class
presentations, project assignments, fieldwork reports conferences and an examination at the end of each semester. The students are graded on the cumulative grade point average scale fixed by the University Grants Commission.
The course aims at providing technical competence in the field of human resources by focusing on subjects such as labour legislation, organizational behaviour, training and development, employee counseling, reward management, etc. There is adequate emphasis on general management
subjects such as financial management, marketing management, production management, management information systems, strategy and corporate planning, etc. TISS is also unique in the sense that it offers the students to undertake research in their area of interest during the tenure of the M.A. Program.
FIELDWORK
Distinctive feature of the instructional program at the Department of PM&IR is the emphasis laid on fieldwork as an integral part of the curriculum. Fieldwork at TISS is a continual system i.e. every semester the student undergoes the training in a different organization.
MANTHAN
The department hosts an annual business seminar Manthan every year, which has become one of the most important and awaited events on and off campus. In consonance with the symbolic essence of ‘Manthan’-the constant process of churning relevant thoughts and ideas in an increasingly
dynamic environment that has been integral to human endeavor, we look forward to Manthan as an event to interact and exchange expertise with both corporate and academic stalwarts.
In the past the seminar has been addressed by the industry luminaries such as Chairmen, Vice – Presidents and CEOs of organizations of established repute and who’s who of the corporate world.
The theme for Manthan 2004 was Cutting edge HR- Responding to the Change Imperative.
PM& IR FORUM
PM&IR Forum is the students’ body of the Department of PM&IR that is committed to the cause of knowledge dissemination among students through industry interface and students ‘Participatory activities. The gap between theory and practice has always been a food for thought for the ‘academically oriented’. The Forum in an effort to feed this intellectual hunger, Organizes guest lectures delivered by industry professionals. During these sessions, the students compare and contrast the theory with the rich field experience brought in the guest speaker.
The past year has seen various distinguished speakers such as Country Human Resource Director Citibank, Manager Resourcing & Development HSBC Ltd., Financial Analyst ICICI Bank, General Manager, HRM & Administration P|&O Nedlloyd, Consultant Thirdware ERP Implementation Systems. TISS has the following master's programs
M. A. in PM&IR
M. A. in Social Work
TISS conducts its selection procedure in the third or last week of June. However the catch is that anyone who wants to take the test needs to go to Mumbai. The details of the course are as follows.
MA in PM&IR:
This course is what has now come to be known as HR. There are 30 seats in all, out of which 22.5% are reserved for S.C/ S.T candidates. In industry this course is rated on par with the PM&IR course of XLRI. The placement scene is extremely good and all major companies come to campus.
Selection procedure: all the candidates who apply are called to TISS. The selection procedure has two stages; (Assuming there is no Aptitude test)
Essay + G.D
Personal Interview
The essay is of 60 marks. Time limit is 60 minutes for the essay test. There is more emphasis on content than on quantity. The topics for the essay are generally socio/economic/politically relevant for ex:
Liberalization
Privatization of education etc.
List of GD/essay topics are posted in the thread.
This is followed by a G.D where again the topics are socio / economic / politically relevant. The G.D is for 30 minutes and is for 40 marks. There are around 10 - 12 people in each group.
So Stage 1 i.e. Essay + +G.D has 100 marks. Anyone who gets more than 55 in this stage are called for the next stage i.e.-Personal Interview.
The interview is for 70 marks. The questions are not generally technical i.e. they don't ask you about labour laws or trade unions etc, etc. The interview is a profile interview, they have a particular profile in mind and they are checking whether you match that profile. So the key is to remain as honest as possible. Brushing up a few fundas like what does PM&IR mean, which are the major trade unions in India and what are their political affiliations etc, may help. Plz know ur basics in ur graduation subjects v well... it reflects v badly if ur asked on ur grads and u don't know!
Your previous academic record (graduation) has a weightage of 30 marks. Out of the total of 200 (100 + 70 +30) they take out a merit list and the top 30 are selected.
M.A. in Social Work:
This course also follows the same selection procedure as above except that there is no objective test, and the qualification mark for the stage 2 is 40. Of course the profile of the candidate that they are looking for is totally different from that of the PM&IR course.
A Candidate can apply for both the courses in the same year.
