I think XIMB doesn't have sectional cutoffs. Sectional cutoffs are a strict norm at XL where they lay a heavy stress on Quants.
Also even if, sectional cutoffs do exist here, Quants will be given more stress.....
Also guys just rest for one more day and u will have the knowledge of results.....
so relaxo and njoi,
cya,
Gaurav

Any idea abt the number of candidates XIMB invites for interview (Rest of the India Category). As such there are approx 44 seats. So it should be around 225 number. But somewhere I read that they call a lot of people(around 500). Dont know what is the truth.
XIMBians pls reply.

Hi KKA,
I would again like to clarify that there are not ONLY 44 Seats in XIMB for students outside Orissa.....
Please read the details about the Reservation poilicies of XIMB in a previous post on this thread.
As far as the number of calls , it is around 500.. the numbers keep varying from year to year.

XIMB FAQs - 30-01-2005, 08:48 PM

Hi guys,
There are a lot of queries about XIMb, and so I decided to put this up here.....
Here is the Official FAQs from the admin sources directly. This is from the horses mouth... As authentic as it gets.... Some of it might be slightly different from what we have mentioned in this forum, but then you have to admit that even we students dont know much about the Admission Process.....

1. Admission Process

How can one procure the application form for the various programs offered by your institute? What are the application submission deadlines?

Applicants are required to take the Admission Test (XAT) to be conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur, on 9th January 2005. For this, applicants have to log on to http://www.xlri.edu/xat and apply online for XAT. Registering for XAT is a prerequisite for applying to XIMB.

Applicants have to also apply online for the XIMB programme, by logging on to http://www.ximb.ac.in . Upon successfully filling the online application form, the payment advice will be available for the applicant to take a printout. This payment advice has to be mailed to the Admissions Office, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar-751013, accompanied by the application fee as mentioned therein. On receipt of the application fee and the payment advice, the Bulletin 2005 will be mailed to the applicant. It may be noted that besides registering for XAT one has to apply (online) separately to XIM, Bhubaneswar. The last Date of applying is 10th December, 2004.

The acceptance of XIMB application filled in online will be subject to receipt of the payment by XIMB. Upon receipt of the payment, the eligible applicants will be intimated by e-mail about the status of their applications.

Please explain the various stages in admission process for each of the programs offered by you. (e.g. test, interview, group discussions etc).

The Institute will decide the section wise cut-off marks as well as weights that will be assigned to different components of the XAT score. The composite score so derived will be used for short-listing candidates to be called for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). GD & PI will be held at Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. Candidates will have to meet their own travel expenses for appearing in the GD & PI. The final selection will be based on the candidate's performance in the XAT and Group Discussion & Personal Interview (which factors in the past academic record and relevant work experience). The selected candidates will be informed by mail by April 10, 2005. Two third of the number of seats will be offered to the residents of the state of Orissa who fulfil the minimum qualifying standard in the admission tests and interview which will be set in tune with the standards set by the top-most Management Institutes in India. This may lead to separate set of cut-off marks.

What is the most important stage / aspect of the entire process (with maximum weightage)?

Each of the stages has its own importance. The XAT test is a process of elimination. Thus out of 12000 applicants approximately less than 4% students are selected for the GD and Interview. This stage is important but the final clinch is the Interview. After the first hurdle, the Interview is the most clinching element in your selection.

What are the skills /qualities you want to test during exam, interview and GD?

The written test as I have mentioned above is an elimination round so the skills and qualities expected of students are their analytical, logical reasoning, command of English and the overall mental makeup of the student is tested. To overcome this, mental alertness and efficiency of thinking is required.

During Interview and GD your presentation skills, body language, confidence level, art of articulation and conceptualization of issues and conviction is tested.

Academic Background

Are engineers more preferred over non-engineer?

No. There is no disparity made between engineers and non-engineers. Both have a level playing field.

Is there a separate cut-off for engineers and non-engineers? Do you evaluate the two types of candidates differently?

As mentioned above, there are no separate cut-offs for engineers and non-engineers and they are evaluated at the same scale and the same parameters.

How important are grades in the selection process?

For applying for the program, Grades do not matter. But once you are at the Interview stage, Grades do matter and kind of impresses the interview panel when they see a candidate with good grades. But, there are also numerous cases where the candidates have low grades but with smart thinking and proper articulation have won the interview board over.

Its your confidence and positive attitude that wins the day for you.

How do you take an applicant's undergraduate alma mater into consideration?

Generally, an applicant’s undergraduate alma mater doesn’t cause much of a difference. The Selection Process looks more at the candidate than having any consideration for his alma mater.

Work Experience

How important is work experience for the selection?

Work experience helps at the Interview stage as any Business School prefers to have students with certain work experience.

What kind of work experience is preferred?

The work experience even if at a lower position should indicate the amount of responsibilities shouldered by the candidate. The post of the work is not a matter. What matters is how much the candidate has learnt from his work environment, what he has learnt and how he has handled issues and situations in his worklife.

What is the school's ideal amount of work experience?

There are no such amount of work experience which can be termed as ideal. But definitely a job with a branded company with challenging responsibilities creates a positive image in the minds of the selectors.

Are applicants with one year of work experience evaluated differently than candidates with five years under their belts?

No. There is no such distinction on the quantity. Rather it is the quality of work and how that work has been implemented that causes an advantage for the candidates during the selection process.

How much professional experience is too much? Is a candidate, say, with 12 years of work experience going to fit into the program?

As mentioned above, term of service or quantity of service is not an issue. The fact lies in whether the candidates have succeeded in carving out a niche for themselves in whatever they have done. Somebody with 12 years work experience might not have been able to do his Business Management course due to various personal and professional factors. The selection committee appreciates those facts and understands them.

Interview

What kinds of questions can an interviewee expect to hear during an interview?

Questions are generally related to academic background of undergraduate degree, situational interpretations, concept analysis and discussion on emerging trends and contemporary issues.
The thrust is with a view to the economic affairs of the Corporate, Governmental sector and the economy.

What attributes are you looking for when you interview candidates?

We are looking for candidates who are self-motivated, confident, have the power of articulation and proper presentation, innovative thinking and independent judgment capabilities.

How long do your interviews last?

Interviews usually last between 15 to 25 minutes.

Is a long interview better than a short interview?

There are no such parameters to gauge this fact. A good interview can last of 5-10 minutes or even extend to 45 minutes. It depends on the interviewers and there is no disparity in selection based on whether it is a long or a short interview

Group Discussions

GD sessions are generally seen as platforms where the student’s initiative, leadership capabilities, coordinating capabilities, team player attitude and good articulation, conceptualization and presentation skills are noted.

Waitlist

How many applicants are placed on wait list?

The numbers vary from year to year.

And how many eventually make it off?

That varies from year to year.

Ultimately, what is it that separates accepted applicants from the wait listed and denied folks?

It’s the selection process in totality. From the applicants, 3-4% of students manage to get to the GD and Interview session stage. Then, out of them another 10 -15% manage to get selected for admission. Thus, it is hard work, sincerity, commitment, mental attitude, self-confidence and the Grace of God that makes the difference between accepted applicant and those waitlisted or denied.

General

How can applicants show you and your staff that they're a good match for the program?

First, by getting through the elimination round and being selected they demonstrate that they belong to the cream of applicants as only 3-4% of applicants get through into the GD/Interview session.

Secondly, in the GD session by demonstrating that they are dynamic, are able to wrest control of the situation and taking initiative are also able to coordinate teamwork and imbibe team spirit which is critically necessary in the 21st century corporate world.

Thirdly, in the Interview by demonstrating their command of speaking, art of explaining concepts, airing their views and successfully convincing the Interview board that their judgment is logical and factual.

What's the worst thing an applicant can do during the selection process?

1. Fill up the form wrong/ Documents are not in order/ faulty or invalid certificates
2. Arrive late for the Exam Test/ GD/ Interview
3. Lose confidence on God and Self.

Fill in the blanks:

Applicants should apply to your program if they're interested in... living like a king, succeeding like a general, climbing the ladder of success like the Stock Exchange Index of a Bullish market and ready to retire on a fortune at the age of 40.

Well, what characteristics is the B-school looking for?

We are looking for students with excellent skills and qualities of analytical, logical reasoning, command of English and the overall mental makeup of the student.

It is also the presentation skills, body language, confidence level, art of articulation and conceptualization of issues and conviction that are tested.

The student’s initiative, leadership capabilities, coordinating capabilities, team player attitude and good articulation, conceptualization and presentation skills are also noted.

What does the school want to learn thru the admission process? Are there things that people do that are more appreciated by the admissions committee? :

Through the admissions process, we want to know different aspects at different points of selection

Which aspect of the application should an applicant be most concerned with to make himself / herself a competitive player?

The thrust should be on providing accurate and precise information. Ambiguity in data leads to uncomfortable questions in the Interview, which subsequently makes or mars the performance of the candidate.

Hope this helps all.... I have attached the pdf version also
